Yup, I know your bumper story. Too far to ship, plus I'll be looking for something either high and tight like that one above that Colorado TJ posted... or tubular.

+1 vote for someone to produce a great swing out like @Porschetech29! Francis, you willing to post overall and close-up pics of yours just as a foundation for discussion?

When I starting talking swing-out with SGU, it got shot down quick for them (weight-bearing hinges) not holding up under the rigors of fast off-road romps. So... I'm back looking at how to store 2 spares in the bed. Having said that:

I'd be interested in a swing out that sets partway inside the bed, so the weight rests in the bed. I imagine I'll have to design such a thing myself though-- not realistic that many others will prioritize as I do.

And, yeah, for right now, I've shifted all mod money from the 3rd to the 1st gen. But "liked" all the stuff in posts above that matches what I would want for my 3rd gen.

I would love this. But I need the use of blindspot and cross traffic.

I vote yes. I’m building my own. Although it’s a 2nd gen. But more peeps need to do this upgrade imo. Not a true off-road truck until this is part of it. In my most humblest opinion :)

All you would need to do is drill holes for the sensors...

The BSM and cross traffic are a flat square box in the corners of the bumper and don't work through metal. It can be done but I decided to nix the system.

No worries man. The rear bumper is getting complicated these days. The BSM system is really cool,,,,, when working. It just makes aftermarket bumpers a nightmare if you wanna retain the OEM system.

Now that’s what I am talking about! That thing is high and tight. I think I would want a little more overhang and possibly a hoop or something for bed protection, because I am sally.

In regards to towing, I don’t think it would be a hot seller without the hitch, but if it’s tied in similarly to the stock rear bumper and reinforced sufficiently, I think it could still pull tow duties. Another option I provided to @ExpeditionOne is to use the Westin hitch. It’s certified to pull weight iirc, but I think it could still accomplish both decently, then build around it.

For swingouts, I dunno man, I have buddies with 40s and 42s on JKs and they still hit the go fast stuff. If they can do it with that much more weight strapped back there, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to see a 35 on a swingout that can take some abuse. If it wasn’t included though, it wouldn’t be a deal breaker for me. My spare can always lay flat in the bed.

Also, realistically, my truck will never be a crawler, nor do I have the space to stretch out it’s legs on a constant basis. When I moved to TX, that may be a different story, but for now, more technicalish trails are in my future.

Also, also, good to see the input from folks. This is what I was hoping for.

Swing outs is probably good for desert stuff (like I hinted to), but for technical or anything tight, I’ve seen them break off or slice tires, both in which I have done. I would rather have tire laying down or standing up in the bed in a mount.

I did have a swing out tire carrier save me from going all the way over once. So that was cool.

What sort of weight are we talking about here? I like the idea, but hate the weight of most rear bumpers. Maybe an aluminum hybrid with a steel inner support for the hitch?

Bumping this up, since I forgot to post this setup as reference from the Black Pearl Tundra. Not even sure if he’s on here, but the bumper setup is relevant to this discussion.

Not sure if the Tundra’s frame can handle the weight of a swingout. The frame is similar in design to that of the 1st gen Tacoma, which experienced bent frames with heavy swingouts so far back.

18-wheeler frames are c-channel, but they’re big and, most importantly, straight. They’re also designed to handle weight on top, not aft of the frame. Tundra frames are thin c-channel from the rear axle back and designed more to flex. They’re also bent over the rear axle. The added weight of a loaded swingout acts more as a lever that puts too much downward strain on an already bent part of the frame. My guess is that over time, that strain will cause it to eventually bend right above and aft of the rear axle - pretty much the same spot it bent in the 1st gen Tacos - especially with the flexing and bouncing effects associated with off-camber trails or high speed desert trail-running.

Anyway, I could be wrong, but the Tundra’s frame design just doesn’t look right to me for the added metal fatigue a loaded swingout can have.

As soon as @ExpeditionOne gets 3-4 people committed to one, they will produce it. I’m committed, pending it meets my needs and the aesthetics look good, they would need 3 more commitments.

Oh.. also, they need someone local to get fitment and mock-up. Although, I’ve offered to ship my truck for them to use.

Oh, ha! Completely missed that you wanted a tube bumper... I thought you meant a plate bumper like they mentioned, but with the black pearls style.

Im a bit late to the party, but where have I been with this thread? I didn't even noticed I was tagged in here also. I wont be able to put any interests or commitments for a rear bumper at the moment just because I put down a deposit for one since November and as of today it's finally finished and ready for me. I honestly don't think I'll be keeping that rear bumper I'm getting just because there is no tow rating on the hitch, so I'm just beyond iffy on that part. It's being made from the same people who made my front bumper. I like the prerunner type bumper, but then again I also need a proven and tested tow hitch with a legit rating. So whichever bumper you guys are going to go with, I'm curious to see. Another thing is, supposedly they are able to accommodate the parking/proximity sensors, but BSM... no and I would love and do need the BSM just to assist when driving during nighttime and I cant see who would be on my passenger side with the windows so tinted. Here is the rear bumper that will be going on my truck soon, like in 2 days...

I am in the process of working with Ruben Clark Auto, in Carpinteria California, on creating a high clearance rear bumper. We will be maintaining the function of ALL sensor. It will also be able to tow just as it does stock.

Now I'm trying to decide where to cut the bed....

Curious to hear your thoughts once you get that done and would love to see photos. I'm considering doing the same one day for better clearance and protection with a wrap-around style bumper.

I got a message from @ExpeditionOne, towards the end of January, thay they will be putting it in the queue for the design phase. Then post up once they have a design proposed.

    I too am impatiently waiting.
