$1100 Tundra build

I got one whole in front of the leaf spring hanger the size of a soft ball and behind the back leaf spring hanger there are 4 holes the size of a golf ball do you think I'll get a new frame?

 

If you fight hard enough and as long as the truck hasn’t already been in for that recall then yes you can get a new frame but like I said you will really have to fight for that they would rather pay you out rather then fix it

 

Like I said in your topic, it all depends on where your holes are. if it's not in area covered in the recall (crossmember only), you're probably SOL.

I'd bring it in to them and see what they say. If you wanted to make a stink they might try and make you happy. It'd be worth a shot.

Yup. They say “a few months” but s guy I talked to said the longest he’s seen is 3.

If they ordered your frame, I would guess they'd give you an estimate of obvious peripheral expenses? Any news on that or are they waiting to tear it apart to give you a specific list - when you really can't say no...

As an example - those rear brake lines look like they'll crumble during the repair, so I'm sure they'll bill you for new brake lines.

yup, still waiting. They apparently don't get any sort of ETA until Toyota ships the frame. Brake lines get replaced with the frame, and nope, they don't give any sort of estimate as to what the extra costs are going to be. The good news is, I came in with a running, driving truck, so that's a big bargaining chip for when the time comes.

 

What rental did they give you?

 

2018 Camry hybrid. I’m not 21 yet, so my parents got the rental. Yippee for them.

 

They can deny a frame replacement if a truck has excessive other problems. Your truck should be fine. They changed my 2002 frame last year at 160,000. I had about the same amount of rust around my rear wheels, and the bottom of one fender. The passenger side door was stove in at the bottom from being hit by a trailer hitch. They never questioned any of that.

 

When they did mine, they loaned me a new, 2017 Tundra with 5,000 on it. I begged them not to. "Don't you have an old Tacoma beater? I live in the Northwoods on an un-maintained logging road." They told me not worry--all part of the wonderful service being offered by Toyota. "Just don't get a scratch on it--it's practically brand new."

Well, I didn't scratch it. But two days later I hit a moose two miles from my house--on a road I drove my beat-up old Tundra on for 10 years with no problems. Took the entire front end out, hood, etc. Had to have it towed back. I tried to buy it off them, but they wouldn't sell it. And they were actually dumb enough to give me another one LOL! Took the side door out on that one out on a logging gate (that I had driven through for 10 years with no problems with my old one..ARRRRRGH.

 

Yeah. If you read later in the thread, Toyota is in fact replacing my frame.

Jeez... Toyota really got screwed on that one.

 

Well, my insurance shelled out $15,000 for the first loaner, I parted with $1500 for the door. The dealer billed Toyota $19,000 and some change for replacing my frame! All-in-all a rather expensive project at close to $36,000!! But it keeps the economy healthy LOL

 

Ouch. That’s crazy...

 

UPDDATE! I've just received word that the frame has arrived and is being installed. Its supposed to be done by Friday!

 

First Expense: New front axles. $374 for both.

 

How long did you wait for your shocks?!

Hey how'd you become so comfortable with vehicle repair and maintenance, so young?! Kinda unlike your generational peers. I'm happy you joined this forum!

 

7 weeks but I was able to drive her while I waited.

 

Well, I’ve been doing car maintenance since I was 12 (I’m almost 21 now), and I started out doing oil changes and such on my dad’s 02 tundra. I did all the family car maintenance until I moved out. Couple that with having four wheelers and being a broke college student with no money for labor, I learned pretty quick.

 

It's awesome! I'm waaaay older and just starting to sift through it all because of my new passion for Tundras and off-roading.

I hope Toyata hooks you up on this frame replacement, and that you stay active in here. We really like the couple of "youngsters" (don't be offended; you can loiter on my lawn ) that have hung out on here, and you sound like a guy with a lot to offer the rest of us.

Yeah I plan on sticking around for a while. Having worked on these trucks for almost 10 years, I’ve done just about everything maintenance related on them, and I really enjoy learning and helping people with these trucks.

 

Okay, it’s story time.

So I got a message from the dealership on Thursday afternoon saying my truck was ready to go. So I go pick it up, start driving it back, and about 2/3 of the way home, the abs light comes on. 10 seconds later, the light dim and the truck starts stumbling really bad. No power at all. So I pull over, and it dies completely. No start, no crank. So I call the dealership and leave a message saying I’m stranded on the side of the road, and proceed to call my dad to come tow me home. I’m the phone with him, I decide to try starting the truck one more time, and it fired up. So then the dealership guy calls me back, and tells me to try make it home and we’ll go from there. So as soon as I hang up the phone, I put the truck in drive, and it dies again. Again, no start, no crank. Battery cables are fine, everything seems fine, but still nothing. So the dealership towed it back.


It turns out there was some loose wire in the fuse block, and they got it straightened out. I’ll go back tomorrow to pick up the truck since I got off of work too late to do it tonight.

 

Hopefully that's all for the gremlins. They covered those costs I hope. Did they charge you for anything besides the front axle shafts?
