I’m curious if anyone has the Toyota OEM hard tri-fold tonneau on their Tundra, and if so, how do you like it? Does it leak? How secure is it?

    Thanks guys!

I have on and its pretty good. It doesn't leak and it secure, the only thing i don't like it that it doesn't fold up to the back window so you loose a panel width of space in the box.

When I purchased my truck (new) I had the Toyota dealer throw in a tri fold hard tonneau cover with the purchase. They installed a Rugged 2 tri fold that I absolutely love! It’s water tight, secured (as long as tailgate is locked), has led lights inside and can easily be removed in one minute with one person. It is my understanding (someone correct me if I am wrong) as I was told by the dealer that this was the same cover that Toyota uses (just doesn’t have the Toyota logo on it). But again, I love it! Highly recommended!

To correct this I also had the dealer throw in a tailgate extender to gain that extra space back.

I like mine a lot, does the job and looks/feels more sturdy than some of the aftermarket ones (besides the diamondback) Its really not that difficult to remove if needed..
I wouldn’t say it’s water tight but I rarely get any water in the bed. Only when I hit the seals directly with a pressure washer when cleaning the truck. The trick is in the install, makes sure it’s lined up and use the foam weather strip at the front of the bed. I also added the tailgate seal just to be sure. Add a pop and lock and you’re good to go.
I’m sure I’ll end up with a canopy again down the road (had one on the Tacoma) but I personally like the way it looks.

Is yours a 2018? I noticed that in 2018 they changed the part number and it doesn’t require the deck rails to connect it? Can you speak to that at all?

Does your connect using the deck rails? Or do you have the newer model that doesn’t require the deck rails?

Yes, my truck is a 2018 but I do have the deck rails. The cover came with a rail relocation kit and does connect to the rails so I'm honestly not sure what the newer part number is.. I do remember the parts guy pulling up two different parts numbers when I bought mine (around May/June 2018) but it was the same cover, kit, etc.

Just saw the new one in the link above.. that's kind of cool. I'm curious how it mounts without using the rail system.. The relocation kit that came with mine was actually solid. Better than the cheaper aftermarket ones. I don't use the bed rails for anything other than the cover and tie downs so it hasnt been a big deal. I'd go check out some new trucks on the lot and see if you can find one with the newer cover.

Mine does not connect using the deck rails. It connects to the edge of the bed rails.

So, yours just clamps to the edge of the bed to secure it down? (and the deck rails sit below it?)

I like mine a lot. It sits nicely just above the bed rails and looks clean. I have the relocation brackets, which give it a gutter for any water that gets past the seals to drain into the gutter and drains out the drain hoses at the front. It's super easy to remove if you need to. I would prefer it to fold up against the back window like the Extang does, but it hasnt been an issue for me yet. It is pretty secure, especially when coupled with the Pop n lock so I never forget to lock the tailgate. That being said it's only a couple of plastic pieces that hold it down, so if someone really wanted to it wouldn't be too hard to get in. Overall, I would recommend it.IMG_3842.jpgIMG_3841.jpgIMG_3843.jpgIMG_3844.jpgIMG_3842.jpg

I have the OEM cover on my 2018 Platinum. It does leak a little around the tailgate.

I think it might be possible. In the online Toyota Parts dealers, they show tonneau cover service part listings, but there are no pictures in the listings. Prices for these range from about $50-90, with some being 300-400. My assumption is that the cheaper parts are the hardware. If you emailed Roman he can likely tell you. The "clamp brackets" that relocate the deck rails slightly lower are very specifically shaped to fit into a "channel" of the bed cover drainage rail that sits on the edge of the bed.

On page 3 of the installation instructions for the oem bed cover, you will see a good illustration of the shape of the brackets that they use, and how they fit into the drainage side rails. You can find those instructions here
    https://www.toyotapartsdeal.com/resources/installation/TPD/my16 tundra tonneau cover-ppo issc.pdf

Keep in mind that for different bed sizes, the parts kit is different. There are more relocation clamp brackets for the long bed than there are for the short bed, so the part bag number will be different.

I would email or phone a competent parts guy to be sure.

Thank you I read a post from years ago from another forum a guy used the oem clamps and an extang encore bed cover, I thought it was a pretty good idea, but his post was from many years ago so wasn’t sure if anything changed. The oem over sure does look like it is the extang encore cover but without the front folding back.

The OEM cover does unlatch in the front, but I think it's only to be able to remove the whole thing. There are two cables that allow you to release the front latches after you fold up the back two sections........but you aren't able to easily lift the front section out of its latches while pulling on the cables. You either need someone else outside the truck to lift it up from one side, or you need to lay on your back in the bed and push it up from underneath while pulling on the cables to keep the front latch unlatched. Maybe if you're over 6 feet tall you can do it while standing in the bed, but I think its awkward to do.

The cover does look like the extant encore in their pictures, but the mounting hardware seems different. The relocation clamps on mine look a lot like the clamps in the bak revolver x4 supplement for toyota vehicles.

I’m looking to buy this 2018 CM 5.5 OEM tonneau from a gentleman who had it factory installed. I have a 2021 CM 5.5 with a sprayed bed and no rails.( I plan to carefully excavate the holes and install). Hopefully going to pick it up Wednesday but wanted to confirm everything I need is there.

by looking at the photo below can either of you, or anyone else, help confirm that everything I need is in the photo?

OEM cover. Gutters? Rails? Relocation brackets? Two drain hoses? 10 screws (5on each side) and maybe a few more? 4 grey bed rail tie down thingys (brain fart). Will probably have to buy weather strip/seal for cab and tailgate since that’s probably still stuck on his truck...

What else? Is that everything I need??

I have the instructions from the dealer near me and they match what y’all posted so I feel confident but wanted a second opinion.

    Thank you.

Just be aware that this is a Toyota accessory which was installed by the dealer. These were not made by Toyota, but were supplied to Toyota (with Toyota rebrand and tweaks) by an aftermarket manufacturer. Typically, accessories are bought by the dealer through the Toyota parts network. You'll need to confirm that all the hardware is there (included the bed rails), because this accessory is no longer sold by Toyota. I doubt that replacement parts for an accessory were ever available separately through Toyota, but I could be wrong on that.

Depending on how much he's asking, it may be a good or not-so-good deal. There are aftermarket options available.

    Thanks.

He’s asking $500. Going to try to get him to come down a little more.

He is using the bed rails for his Cap, and therefore they are not included, however with the installation instructions I got from another thread, and from the dealer, it looks like the tonneau can be installed successfully and just add the bed rails after. My 2021 SX did not come with bedrails...

Can’t find the bed rails separately, looks like I have to buy the whole kit for ~$180. I’ve seen the DIY bed rails on a previous post too but will try to keep it OEM...

I know there are some gators and Bak’s for 700-800. With the OEM MSRP at 1200 without bedrails, 500 seems reasonable if it’s still in as good condition as the photos he’s sent me.

If the rails aren’t required in the near term, then I guess I can just buy them in the spring...

I’ve added the instructions to the post. It says required, but I can’t see where the bed rails do anything for the tonneau.

    thoughts??

Yeah, I can't see where the bed rails are essential to the bed cover installation, but the instructions are pretty explicit. :notsure:

    Tonneau Cover requires.jpg

Maybe someone that actually has one can comment. The supplied brackets clearly lower the position of the bed rails since the brackets attach to the holes formerly used for the bed rails. The entire cover thickness also appears to rest above the bedcaps. But, there are usually two versions of bed covers depending on whether the truck is equipped with bed rails or not. Maybe Toyota just wants to sell you bed rails with your bed cover. I dunno. :notsure:

I have this cover as well. It looks like everything is included based on the picture. Those silver cleats are part of the OEM bed rails so not sure if you will get those or not. You will need weather stripping that goes across the front of the bed. I would recommend adding it to the bottom of the cover and not the bed since it will be a pain in the ass to remove it if I decide to change covers. $500 seems fair to but I just paid $1100 for it!

The cover doesn’t use the rails just the holes that they were originally attached to the truck.

Make sure you get the drain tubes also. I had to drill a 3/4” hole in the covers. Maybe you swap the guy if he did a nice job cutting his out.

Awesome, thank you all. The tonneau was in great condition so I bought it. Will install the new lid, document it along the way, and post a new thread for future reference for those in need of it.

    Random resurrection of this thread:

I have the same one you all have photographed up above. I know someone who has a nearly identical, OEM cover to this except it has a locking access knob at the front of the cover by the cab.

I have been tinkering with several ideas to get the same effect, hopefully cheap and DIY. you can see it in this video:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DsCtOOq-fkA

Just wondering if anyone else messed with trying this or if there's a kit. I can't even seem to find the locking model on any of the toyota parts sites.
