I would consider a hybrid Tundra if it performed as well as a gas Tundra. My daughter owned a Prius years ago and hated it because of the way it transitioned between gas and electric. If that were seamless and not noticeable, the truck weighed about the same, towed at least the same, and did all the other things we expect from a truck I might buy one. An all electric would not have the range that I need. It is not unusual for me to drive 500 miles or more in a day.

Yeah. How are people going to go cut firewood in one of these modules? Or tow a fifth wheel?

And what is going to happen when a family of deer step out onto this freeway where all the modules are doing 150mph and the occupants have no controls?

We will see gangs of people walking out in front of these modules and then robbing the occupants.

This dude is smoking crack and is likely trying to promote a company or technology that he has a $ interest in. This future is probably coming but not within 10 years.

“My reply was that we don't need public acceptance of autonomous vehicles at first. All we need is acceptance by the big fleets: Uber, Lyft, FedEx, UPS, the U.S. Postal Service, utility companies, delivery services. Amazon will probably buy a slew of them.”

In other words the giant corporations will make the decision for you!

We can speculate all day but, in the end they are going to do what they are going to do. There will be changes, I just hope they aren't too drastic. Also like many of you have said, I PLAN on keeping mine until called to Vahalla.

Think I'd rather have the cam tower leak than some of the speculation here. ;)

Mine is stock with 275/65/18 Michelins. My employer is right off the hwy, so I only drive in the city on the weekend if I go out in the truck. When I fill up on Monday morning and then drive back and fourth all week without city driving my tank average is 22 to 23 depending on wind. I always drive the speed limit. Here is a pic from this past week:

Tech at the dealership last night had just gotten updated that a Hybrid Tundra is in pre-production for 2022 and will out-pull current truck and get insane gas mileage compared to current. Idk why everyone is all ANTI HYBRID. Yea the Prius is lame as fuck but I drove a Chevy bolt, and that thing was fast as shit with all the torque in the world. I'd never buy one strictly because it's super dumb, but I would love to see the tech go further. Hybrid tech is cool, the Prius is just a curse that makes everyone associate hybrids with lame. Those of you who are against technology advances are just scared of and against change. I am all for it.

I don't understand all of the hate for the Prius. My wife had the second generation and we loved it. Hate the look of the current generation, but it is a great car.

Agreed. Currently officially the most reliable vehicle on the market. My wife has the Prius V (Station Wagon'ish version) and I love it. Of course it does not have the power that my Tundra has, but it is not supposed to. It does everything that it was designed to do very well. We drove from Florida to Maryland (1,100 miles) for $53 in gas, and it was very comfortable and is actually roomier inside than my Camry. I think hybrid technology in a Tundra will be awesome - it is coming and there is no escaping it; might just as well embrace it.

OMG!! that's what i'm talking about. agree the hate is mis-placed. i'm up to see what a hybrid Tundra is like.

not sure how legit the news might be but TundraDude on YouTube was quoted a source that said the same thing about next gen being hybrid and getting 30+ mpg. will be interesting. no question that it's on the way

No V8 = no sale! I'm sick of what the government is trying to do. I don't have my Tundra yet, but I'll be happy to know I've the last of the old fashioned trucks with a V8, no extra gadgets, fake engine noises, start stop nonsense, or cycl. deactivation.

I'm not opposed to spending less on fuel, but I am opposed to decreasing functional power output and replacing steel body panels with aluminum.

There's a new "bad fuel mileage" thread started on here every 3 days. I say we ban everyone that buys a 6,000 pound truck with almost 400 hp and then pesters us with their confusion about having worse fuel economy than a large sedan.

People complained about Tacoma fuel economy and look what they got.

Ford and now Chevy are using aluminum body panels to improve fuel economy and payload rating, but they are less durable as expected.

There are shirts that say "Don't California My Texas".

In our case Don't Tacoma My Tundra!

Too many people buy a truck purely for the look and to use as a luxury vehicle. They don't want the lower fuel economy that comes with the capability they never actually needed.

Yes this is actually a big problem to those who actually use trucks for work and hauling. Since trucks have become the "in" thing manufacturers have to jazz them up, make them ride good and mpg improvements so this group of consumers is satisfied. Its making the truck, less of a truck.

I also don't have a problem with comfort features. I've explored aftermarket option to add many of them to my SR5, but I can't justify the cost right now.

It's all the moaning about fuel economy that buggs me. I don't want a commuter car drivetrain and suspension or untested engine technology on my pickup truck.

I also don't want dents in aluminum body panels from branches on overgrown forestry roads. Steel panels shrug off mild abuse better than aluminum does.

Steel is also much less likely to develop fatigue cracks over a long service life. This may not matter for someone that trades it in after a few years, but my newest vehicles is 8 years old.

I think we're getting out if the era where you will keep your vehicle for 10+yrs. People just don't do it anymore, most people I know it's like 5yrs Max. We are a throw away society now, why fix it just buy a new one, crazy but that's where we are.

I still have my 1988 Chevy S10, talk about steel body panels lol. This thing is built like a tank and still driving today, I just don't see someone 30yrs from now saying they still have a truck from 2019.

I'm fine with the way things are on my 17 Limited, simple with a touch of class. I dont care for creature comforts, just give me a truck that I can drive myself without sensors and such. People refer to the Tundra as a dinosaur truck and I'm cool with that, less shit to go wrong. People are getting so hung up on technology, air soft ride, gas mileage, etc. in a pickup but most dont even use it as a truck they might as well have a car or SUV. Cars these days are disposable with cheap flimsy parts that you basically have to buy a new one every 5 or so years like we've gone back in time to when 100k miles was over the top. KISS is something auto makers should remember instead they want to change every other year and add new useless technology but we fall for it. How many times have we read about people bitching about no keyless start I mean good Lord does it inconvenience you so much to have to put your key in the ignition and turn it? And all this Apple Car Play shit people bitch about will your life end without it? I'm just happy to have a V8 that runs on all cylinders, heated leather seats (wife) and bluetooth so I can play music instead of shitty radio. It's kind of like the men loosing their masculinity thing that's going around.

    A bunch
What if I offered a new truck to you that hauls 2000 lbs, tows 12000 lbs, has a crewmax cab, android auto and apple car play, has 420 HP and 500 lb ft of torque, could do a 5 sec 0-60, AND gets 25 mpg combined? I think most of us would be ecstatic with those numbers (as long as it has other features like heated steering wheel and 3 level heated seats) and would be lining up to buy. Guess what, that truck would be a hybrid. Smack on an electric engine onto a 4.5 to 5 litre v8 and those numbers would be possible. To me the electric powertrain needs to supplement a gas engine, not be the main part of the engine that has an engine to charge the batteries. If anyone can make a powerful but efficient hybrid it's Toyota. Not only do they have years of experience with passenger cars, they have also been racing in Le Mans with a turbo v6 hybrid and were beating Audi and Porsche on speed (reliability let Toyota down lol). I have all the faith in Toyota that they will redefine 1/2 ton powertrains in the next gen, and that can't happen with an old school v8 as the flagship engine. I think they should keep one as an option, but not the fastest, most powerful one.
