Hello fellow tundra dwellers. So I have recently put on a 6 inch RC suspension lift on my 2011 tundra 4.6L V8 double cab. Therefore I also put on some fury country hunter mts 35x12.50xr18 with 18x9 American racing wheels. So I’ve noticed a loss in power especially on the highway and at speeds 60+ which was expected and was considering regearing my truck. I believe the current gear ratio is 3.91 if I’m not mistake and was wondering was the best gear ratio would be to go to. Really want to maintain a similar drive to factory or better if I can. The truck is also 2wd so i would only need to regearing the rear?

Yes I think I’ve seen this chart. The green section for 35’s says to install 5.29 gears. I thought the most it went to was 4.88? This is where I’m confused. I dont want to “over gear” if that makes sense and make the truck disproportional

for 35"s most of us with 5.7L just stay stock. you could go 4.88 but 5.29 would be 37's and bigger for sure.

The 5.7 L comes with a 4.3 gears. That would probably get your 4.6 with 3.91s feeling like it used to. Next option would be 4.88s. Someone is supposed to be coming out with a 5.29 gears. Right now on stock tires and gears, at 72-75mph I’m right around 2000 rpm in 6th gear and the torque converter locked out.

I have my OEM/stock 4.3 gears for sale if you're interested. I'm on 4.88s now but I'm also on 40" tires. I'm going to 5.29s and 42" tires later this year.

I wouldn’t mind 4.88s on my stock tires. BA!

more than I can list here
A 4.6 uses the diff from a land cruiser which is only 9.5” not 10.5” nothing from a 5.7 will work in a 4.6

For 35’s if you want to spend $ on gears and make it feel stock go 4.88.

But if you want your money to go toward making it more fun than stock go 5.29

I prefer to spend my money making it more fun than stock rather than making it stock.

There is just about no such thing as too much gear. The steeper the better. Gotta remember we are not carbureted. We have adaptive memory efi. Vvti. Variable runner length intake. The ecu determines afr based on load. Increasing wheel speed in relation to mass air meter volume fools the ecu into thinking there is less load. It in turn adds timing and takes out fuel. This actually keeps more Hp on the table. And gives you better fuel economy.

When using a chart to determine gear ratio the rule of thumb is find the ratio they goes back to stock. Then step it up 1-2 more to make up for the extra weight.

    Call for details.

Only downside is strength on the 5.29 vs 4.88s

    What Keith said sounds reasonable.

    What 15whtrd sounds fun. :D

I went a bit over on my truck, very different truck but my fuel usage did drop to Keith's point.

Are the 5.29’s made differently? Or are you saying this because they are now spinning so much more creating more torque to break something? Just curious

I believe the constant mesh/contact patch for the 5.29s is 1 and the 4.88s is 3. I also believe this to create more heat due to more work/stress due to teeth contact. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

Seems fair. Less teeth on the pinion possibly?

I will be regearing some time this year. I am thinking 4.88 for a truck with 305/55r20. Does that sound right or should I go 5.29? Also interested in upgrading other components while I'm in there. What locker/lsd is recommended for a daily driver? I've heard of an issue in the front diff where you get a vibration but it goes away while in 4x4. Is there anything like that or anything else I should upgrade while I'm in there on front or rear diff?
