CAM SHAFT TOWER SEAL LEAKING ** PLEASE READ***

Can someone recommend a dealer with experience servicing their cam towers in Southern California? I live in Redlands/Highland to be specific and would prefer to stay close. Here is a list of local dealers to me.

south Bay toyota did mine. They gave me a rental free of charge too. A bit far for you but you get a rental. Dropped off on Tuesday, picked up on Friday.

 

While mine isn't leaking, yet, I wouldn't let a dealership tear my engine down and hope that it is put back together with all the right torque's and sequencing. Watch the youtube video that was posted a few pages back. Unless I got a full out dripping, this would fall into the camp of keep and eye on it and wipe it off.

 

I don't understand those that say that they would just "accept" a leak on a new vehicle.

I have some broken shit that I can sell you. It'll be a good price, and it is just "kind of" broken.

 

X2, I could accept it on a 100k+ mile engine, they should be able to sell us an engine that can seal up properly.

 

Has anyone taken their Tundra to Longo Toyota for this?

 

Some things are better broken in. Why not let the first husband do the hard work...

There's a Change.org petition for the 5.7L Cam Tower leak if you are into that sort of thing. It had north of 2,700 signatures last time I looked.

No, I have not, but being the biggest Toyota dealership in Cali they’ve probably done a few. I would definitely want a master tech doing the job, and not his first one.
My dealership in San Diego, Kearny Mesa Toyota, would not do mine because it’s “seeping” and not dripping...yet. Only 12K miles.

 

Is this the infamous cam tower leak in early stages (2016 30k miles)??? Top pic is passenger side, bottom is driver.

Its leaking oil slightly near that dreaded spot, just unsure if its the CT leak. If so I think I only have till the end of this month to get to the dealer; my truck was produced 01/2016!!!

Thats exactly what mine looks like. You have two more years if i am right this is under powertrain warranty so its 5 years.

 

Yep looks like you have the leak, hard to tell from the picture for the driver-side but it looks like its leaking as well.

I think it will fall under powertrain, but you never know how they want to classify things. I got mine in before the 3/36k was up just to make sure it was covered.

 

I just didn't know if it was, for sure, powertrain. I'm going to call the dealer tomorrow and hopefully have the initial screening down next week just in case. That way it'll be on file before the end of my warranty (expiring at the end of the month) if they cannot perform the job for a few weeks.

Alloutdrs- How long did the job take/how long did they have your truck for?

 

powertrain. 5 years/60K. I fixed mine right before 5 years

 

Is the new gasket/part better than the original. IE did they correct the issue or is it just another likely to defect part?

The silicone used for the repair is black, and yes, it’s an upgrade in terms of silicone sealants. The factory silicone is gray. The integrity of the fix is in the hands of the tech that performs the repair. Toyota is now allowing fewer hours for the repair. Good luck.

Update #2.......... Picked up my truck today. As I stated earlier they would only do driver side under warranty. Spoke with Corporate and Service Director about passenger side. After much discussion we settled on passenger side being done at half price....... Both sides done, they had my truck 5 days

 

Glad you got it fixed! But that’s BS that they wouldn’t do the other side under warranty.

 

Thanks, I agree........... They were adamant it wasn't leaking so they couldn't fix something not broken.

 

That's the same thing I was told when I took mine in, I even offered to pay for the driverside and they still wouldn't. tech told me if it's not leaking why tear down your engine more. The way they did mine was without removing the timing cover so then it made sense to me. If they were removing the timing cover I would want both sides done.

 

Ya I guess but still.... they should know better than anybody that if it happens on one side it will happen on the other side!
Keep your receipt just in case Toyota finally decide to do something about this cam tower situation and maybe you can get a refund. One can only hope eh!

 

Mine was only leaking on driver side. I talked to the service manager and he agreed to do both sides under warranty. This is Toyota’s problem. Them making anyone pay half for a ten year known defect is robbery. I was pissed they wouldn’t extend my warranty, and then I got a survey in my email regarding my experience with Toyota corporate.

My dealer is awesome. Toyota corporate, meh.

 

Well if its just a minor weep of oil, which it seems to be for most cases noted so far, then I wouldn't consider that "broken." "Broken" implies that the vehicle can no longer function effectively. I haven't heard of any Tundra's, even those with known leaks, breaking down due to loss of engine oil. And if you're going to try and argue that this will become a more serious issue with time and mileage....okay, that's within the realm of possibilities. But I'd also point out that there are plenty of high mileage 5.7l Tundra's out there that are still running strong....it's not like there is an established pattern of these trucks breaking down once they hit a certain mileage.

So people can figure out for themselves how they want to handle an issue; some people weigh the pro's and con's of having a complicated procedure done on what could potentially be a very minor issue.

 

Can anyone report if they are having this issue on a 2019? I can’t see well enough into my truck what color the silicone is, so I’m no help.

Sorry, broken means not functioning as designed. I am an Engineer by trade - if I design something and it doesn't work as I intended it to - then it is broken. If you are telling me that they designed this thing to leak - then fine, it isn't broken. However, it isn't supposed to leak. They didn't design it to leak. If it is leaking, it is broken. And sure, there are plenty of 5.7s out there "running strong". There are many, many more 5.0s and 5.4s and 7.3s out there running strong, also. It doesn't mean that they all don't have problems of some kind. This is an established problem with the 5.7s. It is a shitty design, plain and simple.
