I would hit big bear if I were you. Mammoth is more for snowboarding or skiing. For what you are looking for (quick and sledding), Big Bear will do you just fine.

As for the 4x4 advice, what everyone is saying is good advice.Best way to learn is by doing, have fun!

Just found some old cool snow pictures...

If you want to do snow, not boarding or skiing, and are willing to go to Mammoth.

Just go to Yosemite.. go this weekend! Tons of snow.
    Chains for sure needed.

I like Mammoth but I dont like the 5-6 hour drive from Ventura or the cost of hotels. I like Big Bear too but it's usually pretty packed. I go to (cue the frowns) Mountain High just about every weekend if there is snow. It's about 2 hours from Ventura and theres plenty of snow around for sledding and such. I go for snowboarding myself.

There was plenty of people having a bad time driving last weekend. Saw a Mustang that was left on the side of the road overnight, guessing they couldn't handle the drive. Saw a few trucks sliding around too.

Drive safe, stick to 20-25mph and carry chains for the extra weight, you may never need them. Go very easy on gas and brake, I avoid stopping on inclines. Try to have a full gas tank on the way up, bring blankets, extra clothes, food and water.

I’ve been turned around by CHP in a bad storm headed up to mammoth in a 4wd 4Runner because I wasn’t carrying chains.

I have noticed a lot of Colorado Tundra owners here and I just reviewed the CDOT chain laws https://www.colorado.gov/pacific/sites/default/files/chain station brochure.pdf I thought 4WD was all you ever needed. But Code 16 or 18 says chains required even for 4WD. I’ve been driving 4WD and AWD vehicles for 20 years in as much as 2’ of snow on I70 and never saw anyone checked or pulled over for not having chains on a private vehicle. It’s different if you cause an accident, I believe, in terms of tickets. Anyway, just wondering if anyone has ever seen that chain law enforced on a 4WD.

    Update!

Thanks everyone for all the tips and tricks for driving in the snow! I bought super Z chains from Walmart 100 bucks just in case and sure enough I was asked to show them. We went up to Mt. Pinos and there was a ton of snow up there. Lots of people turned away to go buy chains. I never needed the chains, but I was asked to show them to a CHP officer. It was slippery, but not bad at all.

The Tundra definitely kept the family safe on our first snow day.

Once again appreciate all the great comments.

And here it is in the snow cuz I just had to take a pic to share haha.
