Was wondering who uses their standard shifting option and when?
    Towing?
    Slowing to a light?
    Maintaining speed down a hill?
    Closed course racing?

I've done it making abrupt stops...can help slow ya down pretty quick ...or around turns... During some EVOC training I was driving the crown Vic and used the shifter to down shift around turns....the instructor commented on that and applauded it...keeps it from spinning out of control.

I use it to help slow the truck down when coming to lights occasionally. Mainly use to help maintain speed coming down hills though.

I use it regularly when coming to a stop or turning from highway speed. My driving is 95% highway so pretty much on a daily basis. I also use it on curvy mountain roads and occasionally while towing.

I dissolve up in the cascade foothills about 1500 up, I really liked down shifting to slow me down instead of using the brakes. Coming down slippery slopes was a breeze. I also used it when launching and getting my old boat on and off the trailer.

I use it to control descent through winding turns in the Sierra Nevadas. I find that I only have to use brakes if someone has chains on or is driving really slow in front of me. The Bilstein shocks help the truck through turning compared to our other vehicles.

Now that I have some answers on that my next question:

Is it bad to downshift in an automatic transmission to slow the truck down? I noticed that you could shift down to 2nd gear around 50mph.

I think if you're red lining it during the process, that may be an additional amount of stress on the engine/tranny that u may not want....u trying to chirp the tires?:) ...stock tires have done that before ;)

I personally think our manual shifting option sucks. Maybe for the guys that use it while towing it works, but if I put it in manual mode, I want it to STAY in the gear I put it in. For instance, when I set cruise to 70mph, and put the truck in sixth gear, I want it to stay in sixth gear, instead of shifting it down. Imagine the gas we would save on a long, mountainous trip if our trucks actually stayed in 6th gear? Sure we would go below our set cruise limit, but after the hill it would catch back up, or we could just manually shift down when WE want. So that sucks...

IIRC the selected gear becomes the maximum gear it'll shift up to. In other words, if you're in say 4th, then it can still shift to 3rd through 1st, but not 5th or 6th.

I personally have noticed it is better in gas milage compared to just putting it in drive for daily driving. I will be using it this weekend when I drive a 6x12 trailer from here in GA to Ohio, hopefully it will help when I hit the hills and mountains in VA/WV

I use it all the time in my Taco. My only issue is with the first gen Tundras, they only have 1,2,D on the column shifter. Boo!
Nothing like downshifting into second coming up to a corner to barrel out of it again at 3,500 RPMs.

    Mmmm...borla...

Keep her under red line and the engine will be your aux. braking system. Diesels bite on this and my 28' outback caused the driver seat to have this small cavity from sucking foam during Austin Hill Country down hill slaloms.... :burnrubber:

I used the shifter going down hill in the wife's 4Rnr much much sweeter then the stick shift in the Lariat.....just a tap down or up and it good... so enjoy the bennies of just touching the shifter and watching the rpms and gear position

I use it to slow down if im coming in hot to a red light, and cruising down long hills. Also, i shift right down to first to climb my driveway (it is super steep). Seems the transmission wants to try 3rd every time i dont manually shift down.
