I recently had my Tundra washed at a dealer and when it came out the entire truck was scratched from the front bumper and all the way around the perimeter of the truck. The scratches were all parallel and most of them were deep. Today was my appt. at the car care center and when I went to pick it up the scratches were still visible. The car care center buffed the scratches but didn't fix them. The body shop was brought over to see what they would need to do in order to fix it. The estimator said that wet sanding should remove them, but if not said that the bottom half of the truck would need to be painted. The service manager informed me that if in fact it needs to be repainted then it would void the factory paint warranty. I have no experience in a situation like this and would like your thoughts, suggestions, and advice as to what I should do please. I took delivery of this truck on 10/31/18 and it has less than a 1000 miles on it. It is a 2018 TRD Sport/Black Exterior. Is it unreasonable to negotiate a trade in and new purchase? Thank you in advance for your help in this matter.

How does their body shop having it painted void the warranty? The body shop would then accept the warranty for paint defects after.

He said that the factory paint warranty is voided, but the body shop would then warranty their work.

Reason why I NEVER use an automatic car wash. I would take it back, drop the keys off and tell them to have a rental for me ready and call me when it’s fixed. Or I can just camp out at the dealer for a day and make sure that every customer that comes into the service department is aware of the issue.

Dealerships and authorized body shops are factory certified. If they do it right, to factory specs, it should not void any warranty. Sounds lk they do not want to do it.

    Welcome from NY.

Sorry to about your issues with the dealership. If the dealership is going to repair it they should warranty it. If you want to trade it in, they should give you exactly what you paid. The truck is new and they damaged it. If they don't want to warranty the repair in writing I think I would contact Toyota Customer Care or hire a lawyer.

Sucks to have a brand new truck and have it molested and repainted. I would try to negotiate a new truck.

My friend is the service manager at a Toyota dealer. One of his porters fender bendered a new Tacoma. They had to repair it and sell it as a used truck.

I'd make the dealer eat that truck if you can.

I had the same type problem on my 2000 tundra. I bought it new in 2000 and 2 yrs and 50,000 miles it started to shift harder than I thought it should. I took it back to Toyota 3 times and they couldn't find anything wrong. One morning it started shifting hard again so I had it on my mind to call them again and the trans went out and left me on the side of the interstate. I called Toyota and they told me to get it to them to check it. I told them that I had brought it in 3 times and that the transmission had went out and that it was on the side of the road and if they wanted it they could come and get it. If it got burned or vandalized it would be their baby! 2 hours after I got a ride to work, I got a call saying they had went and picked it up and they were going to replace the transmission. You are paying for the truck and it is under warranty, Stand by your guns and MAKE them fix your truck and have them warranty the paint job in writing.

Tell them if they don't offer a warranty on their work to take it to a shop that will.

Just wanted to update you all on the conversation that I had with the body shop this afternoon. The body shop told me that they are 90-95% sure that wet sanding and buffing will remedy the scratches. They are also going to order the rear bumper cover (plastic) which was also heavily scratched as well as the plastic film that is in front of the wheel wells. Their estimation is just over $1000 which the representative said he needs authorization from the dealership first then will contact me. I told the body shop rep that for the peace of mind that I would want an exterior application like (Ziebart) due to all of the work that has been done to the truck in just over 3 months. If this doesn't fix the issue then he said the paint estimate would be $4000-$5000. I also asked him as long as the repair follows Toyota specs then why would the warranty be voided (thanks guys!) and his response was that it wouldn't be. I also stated that if wet sanding doesn't work then I would be trading in for a new truck.

Am I on the right track here? Should I let the repair run its course or just demand exactly what I paid for it and get a new one? Please advise! Thank you!

Sounds pretty good to me. I would think wet sanding would make the clear coat thinner and weaker. Make sure they dont burn through.

Painting a vehicle dramatically reduces resale value, if a dealership scratched my car up that bad i'd call corporate and try to get them to buy it back and i buy a new one. Even if they wet sand it, clear coat would be thinner and will be more prone to deep scratches that will break the paint later. I don't know if i'm comfortable with that either, either way, i'd be pissed.

That is what I was thinking. Seems they will be diminishing the clear coat, won't that affect warranty?

Best response in here and most likely how we all feel. I'd start the process with corporate if the dealership will not consider buying it back.

I’d like to see pics of the scratches AFTER being buffed out. Did I miss those?

Sometimes things aren’t as bad as we make them. Sure its buffed out and you still may see some scratches, but most other people wouldn’t recognise them.

What I’m getting at here: Negotiate some other deal like parts or service to your truck vs. a new paint repair. You may be better off this way.

Now, if the buff job looks like butt... then you should get a new paint repair. Black shows every flaw and will eventually scratch anyways.

I had some body shop work on some scrapes on our Avalon and the shop uses factory paint and amount of coats and bakes it. The owner gave me a tour of their spotless facility and showed vehicles in progress. I was very impressed. This was a nearby shop that was approved for the repair by my insurance. They guarantee (written) their work for lifetime of my ownership of the vehicle.

When I got the car back you could not tell anywhere where the 2 panels had been repaired or painted. I checked in bright sunlight and not difference in color (2 year old vehicle at the time color silver). This shop was rated 5 stars in every review with glowing remarks. You could tell by the cleanliness, organization and professional treatment they give their customers that this was a shop paying attention to all details and caring about their customers.

Some body work I have seen is not so good. You can see the finish/color difference on the repaired panels and I was very concerned about that happening. I can see why the factory is not going to guarantee some shop's work (they cannot control that). I would think it important to use a reputable highly skilled body shop that guarantees their work and uses OEM paint in OEM layers of primer/base/clear minimum. The dealer might go low cost, which might not be the best quality, so you might want to check out the body shop before giving a green light to repaint. I personally if in your situation, would not hesitate to take it to the shop I used to make sure it's done right. If you can agree on one you trust then I'd go for the repaint. A thin buffed out finish is not going to last down the road either. Just IMHO.

Good luck with getting your truck back to a good painted state.

The service advisor notified me that the truck was ready and that it was immaculate. Since the dealer is 35 minutes away I reminded him to not waste my time and when I inspected the buff job it disgusted me and I reminded him that he was not to waste my time. I should have taken pictures but I didn't. I ended up leaving the truck there and they shuttled me home.

I too am concerned about the longevity of wet sand and buff, but I am also concerned by the resale value of the truck. Thanks for your time and insight. My gut is telling me to pursue the buyback and new purchase.

Wow. I do feel for you man. I still cant believe they didn't give you a loaner, even a freakin Yaris or something (do they still make those haha?)

Time to go to corporate. What's the dealership's new plan?
