That's basically what they told me as well, I had planned to keep the truck much longer then that. Its crazy how arrogant they are over an issue they know about. I could see if it was a fluke but this has pretty much been happing during the entire run of the 2nd and 3rd gen Tundra's. Keep us updated on what you find out.

So I did a surprise drop-in at the dealer today to check on my truck. I drove around back and saw my truck just sitting in the parking lot, so they obviously weren't even working on it. I then asked the service manager what the Toyota rep said (since he said one was coming out to look at it today), and he got all red in the face and said he'd ask the tech. While he was looking for the tech the tech actually pulled right into the service area in another car, so I got a chance to talk to him. He said he was trying a few more things and still couldn't fix it, and when I asked about the Toyota rep he was completely caught off guard. He said he knew nothing about a rep coming out and that they would have to file a claim if they needed one to come out, so basically the service manager was straight-up lying to me.

I then asked to talk to the service director and he said he thought my truck was already fixed. We talked for a while and then he said he was going to give it to one of his more experienced techs (what?! Why the hell wasn't one of the more experienced techs dealing with this in the first place?!) in the "day crew" tomorrow. Anyway, I asked if they can help me out in dealing with Toyota, and he basically said Toyota won't do anything, but "they as a dealership" might be able to do something, which of course translates to "we'll pretend we're giving you an awesome deal on a trade and try to make a bunch of money off you".

The more this drags on the less faith I have in Toyota and this dealership. Should I tell them to just stop what they're doing and take it somewhere else?

As much as it sucks, I'd probably continue to work with the same dealership. I had a similar issue with my prior vehicle (Dodge Ram 2500) and ended up going to another dealer to fix a problem that wasn't resolved by the first dealership. The second dealership said because someone else had been in there (different dealership worked on the problem) they wouldn't do anything for me under warranty. What a joke.....ended up trading the truck in shortly after due to multiple problems.

Yeah, I hear you, but I can't imagine that's legal. It seems like if it's a dealer service department then they'd have to address a warranty claim. But whatever, I don't really know.

I would probably stick with the same dealer, heck try and get them to make you a sweet deal on a new truck if need be. I would be on the phone everyday with Toyota, opening up and all aluminum engine 3+ times just doesn't sit well with me. You are at hat point now, are you ever going to be happy with it again or are you always going to find fault in it?

I mean right now I feel like I'm always going to have an uneasy feeling about it, but we'll see what time does to that after I get it back. I do want to see what they'll do for me, but it's a dealer so I'm sure they'll give me some "great" sleezeball deal.

Crate Motor from Toyota so they then can perform exploratory surgery on the original engine in order to locate the root cause. In their Lab of course.

Service director called today and said some FIPG sealant from the cam tower repair got into the oil channel and was blocking it? He said that was somehow messing with the timing and wasn't allowing the VVTi do its job. A lot of what he was saying didn't make sense, but he claims that doesn't do any damage...

I can believe this, it took me quite a few oil changes after my repair before I stopped seeing gasket material in my filters. As part of this repair they should be running the trucks after and then changing the oil to get the crap out of there. Instead they send you on your way with this crap floating through your engine. Also shows you that they are not very careful while doing this repair. Hopefully they have you straight now, how far did they have to tear it back down?

They were supposedly putting it back together today and I should be able to pick it up tomorrow. I'm going to ask them all the details when I go get it. Fingers crossed it's all good now.

If it was debris I would get them to give you another free oil change within 250-500miles. 8qts of synthetic is expensive but you need to do shorter intervals after this repair to get the junk out, make them pay for it.

Definitely possible. The VVTI passages are very small.

Alright, I'm confused, why does everyone keep saying V-TEC?! I thought V-TEC was Honda, and VVTi is basically Toyota's version of the technology.

So the service director said today that my truck was fixed and asked me to come in and drive it with him. We went for a drive and sure enough it was still making the noise. At first he tried to say it was normal, then I told him his master tech said it "definitely is not normal" and he changed his tune a bit. I straight up said I wanted a new truck since it's been opened up at least three times now. He went and talked to the GM and now they're getting Toyota involved. They've also put over 100 miles on the truck in the last week, so they've obviously been out testing it. I'm now asking for documentation on everything they've done, but I can tell they're now getting a little more "safe" and not really wanting to say anything. The service director admitted to me that it was their fault that my truck was making the new noise after the cam tower repair, but now he's saying he wants Toyota to come out and determine whether it was the dealership's fault or whether there is something wrong with the engine. It doesn't matter to me, but I can see them gearing up for a possible lemon claim and they're trying to cover their asses. I'm stressed to the max, but more to come I guess...

Damn, sorry to hear about your trouble. Stuff like this is why I’m always scared to bring my truck to the dealer for any repairs. Of course I would have done the same thing in your shoes. I wouldn’t even know where to start in fixing a cam leak nor would I want to. At this point, I’d probably just keep making noise. As much as it sucks, the lemon law might just be your best bet..
If they come back and offer a “trade” make sure they pay off the balance of the truck (assuming it’s financed) and cut you a deal on a new one.
Either way, hope it all works out and keep us posted on the results as I’m sure you won’t be the last one this happens too..

I'm late to the thread but I was going to guess something was rattling physically like a heat shield when you hit the vibration freqs of 4k rpm.

That's what the tech initially thought, but then he took another tech for a ride and he said it definitely sounded like it was coming from inside the engine.

I took it in with about 8,8xx and the dealer had put 100-150 miles on it "test driving" it, so just over 9,000 now.

I would definitely look into filing a lemon claim.... which I know you are. But, if that didn't prove fruitful, I would take my losses and dump the truck. I have very little patience with new vehicles failing.

Sucks this happened. I hope you can get a decent outcome.

They’re just fucking with you. V-Tec is Honda technology and it “kicks in” higher in the RPM range, similar to what you’re experiencing. VVTi is Toyota technology.

What dealer is this (I’m local to you) - I want to make sure to avoid them at all costs! I’m guessing Gladstone given the Oregon City signs lol.
Did you make sure to ask the service manager if they’ve performed the Cam tower seal leak prior to performing any work?
Very sorry to hear the frustration you’ve encountered with Toyota locally.

I would email Toyota. Dealership is in a situation where they completed a repair gone bad and they've lost a lot of tech time on it, now they're hoping Toyota helps them recover. None of that has you in mind. The manager is full of shit, the only part he explained that sounds reasonable is that sealant got in the oil passage. If that is the case it could have caused damage and Toyota will probably tell the dealer it's their problem.

I think I also would not want the truck back. All that in under 10k miles is only setting it up for a bad future. Even if they swap the motor they don't sound very competent. Reach out to Toyota in writing and see if they can buy back. Sounds nuts I know but a friend at work did this with a 3 year old Audi, they bought it back well above market value.

Push for new truck, even if they were to give you a new motor I think on Tundra's they remove the cab of the truck so your looking at even more disassembly on your truck. Your in a bad situation all around and this could of been avoided if Toyota would fix the cam tower issues at the factory.
