With our move to Idaho in process, I plan to venture into mountain hunting and elk hunting. I have bow hunted whitetail since I could but I have quite a bit to learn about elk and remote hunting locations with elevation.

I have been slowly building up items. So far this is what I have:

    -Vortex Crossfire 10x42 bino
-Sixsite camo clothing for everything except rain(looking to get their rain gear as well)
-scarpas boots(use these for hiking as well)

So to all the hunters who have done elk hunting in remote places and in the mountains, what’s your go to gear?

Bino harness, rain gear, packs, sidearms, etc.

Been looking at Kuiu for some items but waiting to see what Sixsite has to offer here soon as I like supporting a veteran owned company and made in the USA.

Kuiu is great gear. I can't afford it so I go with Carhartt. I've got a Vortex on my .06. I like RedWing but Scarpas' are sure nice. Snow shoes can come in handy depending on conditions. Small first aid kit is good. Puma skinning knife. waterproof matches. Waterproof geodetic survey maps...decent shooting gloves....TP........You sound like you know what you are doing. Actually THE most thing is to let folks know where you are going and when to expect you to be back!

Emergency blanket, small lithium flashlight, wool socks...Dang there's a lot of things to consider. It all depends where you go. How isolated it is. If weather turns bad....snacks, energy bars, flask of whiskey.....heh...heh...

Layer your clothing. Base layer, medium layer, heavy layer outer layer should be gortex. Stay away from cotton, once its wet it stays wet and saps body heat.

Almost forgot...I have a Browning bino harness. Quite good. A big fan of anything Browning.....Most of my camo clothes are Mossy Oak or Real Tree from Bass Pro. Scent is a good idea. Especially for Elk. oh...a decent sidearm..

Layering is key!! That’s what I like about Sixsite and Kuiu. Their gear is based on hunting with lots of movement in most cases so it’s versatile and breathable which is huge!

Kuiu has some great tough lite back packs. Helps with storing what clothes you shed or need. I think Kuiu even has very decent hunting sunglasses.

They definitely do. I will probably need to add some of their stuff. Even their boot/pant gaiters are top notch based on reviews so I may grab some of them as well.

I have their 2019 catalog. I pretty much drool over it. I couldn't go hunting this year even though I drew a Buck and Bull tag. Hopefully I can go this coming season...if I can draw the tags again...

I don’t have their catalog but constantly drool online at all they offer. They really have covered everything needed for hunting situations and some!

I’m anxious to see what Sixsite has in the works. They have been phenomenal to deal with and even for whitetail hunting, I stayed warm in their gear without the bulk of most clothing.

Added to links to original post so it’s easier for people to find.

Not sure about Idaho's seasons but depending on when you are out, you may need nothing more than a sweatshirt. You'll likely be on the move so you can get overheated fast with even mid type layers. Best thing I can think to suggest is to be in good shape.

Also snow shoes can come in handy, again depending on when you go. I also used onX map app this year. It was great.

This is not so much clothing as in awareness in northern states. Not sure if you have always been in Texas, but I will assume so.

Everything is bigger animal wise. I know everything is bigger in Texas, except when it comes to wildlife.

Daylight in the fall and winter is a lot less, and weather is always a concern. Great we have technology today that wasn’t available 30 years ago when living up north. This may have saved a few overnight unschedualed camping trips.

I was born and raised in Michigan so just a temporary Texas transplant currently. Haha

I’m used to cold weather but not so much the larger animals.

What you have stated is very true. Nature is a different beast up that way.

    For sure.

My wife was surprised at the wolf population in ID the last time we were there in 16’.

Wolves are in the UP of Michigan and I believe some are venturing to the lower. We dealt a lot of coyotes where I’m from and in Illinois, but nothing larger.
