Welcome from Northeast Connecticut. I have a 2015 SR5 TRD DOUBLE CAB. My tow capacity is 10500 but i had to add helper springs because of rear squat. If you don't have a brake controller get the P3 because everyone is having problems with the OEM. E-trailer is the cheapest and the sell the plug and play wire harness. ESP sells a replacement panel for the controller so you don't have to drill holes to mount it.20181201_141752.jpg

    Welcome!

Look on the side of your door sticker for your max payload. Your calculated payload = any mods you did to the truck over OEM, what you carry inside the cab/bed, wt of occupants, and the hitch weight.

    IMG_3551.jpg

Online it says a 2019 Limited max payload = 1520lbs, max towing capacity = 8800lbs.

The corresponding max hitch weight is probably 880lbs, going towards that, our Tundras sag in the rear, you would need a WDH and airbags. The brake controller syncs your brakes with the trailer brakes. And going towards the max towing capacity, you can't drive fast or you'll feel the sway and regardless, you really need to anticipate your stopping distance. That's how I feel towing around 7500lbs, I cruise at a conservative speed between transport trucks, and hate when people cut me off when there is heavy traffic.

Commonly for our trucks, it's the payload that is the limiting factor first.

If you stuck with your initial toy hauler, I'd go 3/4T pickup or higher, sacrificing ride quality of course when not towing.

But the power doesn’t stop there. In fact, all sixteen configurations of the six trim levels can all tow at least 10,000 pounds. All trim levels with the 5.7-liter V8 include the TOW/HAUL Mode, which holds lower gears for longer, increases throttle response, increases pulling power and increases engine braking.

From the article. I know what you are getting at in am just going by this.

There is the ability to pull something and then there is the ability to pull a load safely, just because the truck has the power to move a 10,000lb load doesn't mean it should. When you start adding 4x4 and larger cabs its adding more weight which reduces capacity.

Yes it plugs into the factory harness. Don't waste your money on OEM controller. They don't work for crap. There has been a bunch of threads about them

This. Using anything at more than about 80% of its rated capacity gives me the heebie jeebies. “Rated for it” does not equal “its a good idea.” FWIW, I tow a 5000 pound trailer quite regularly, tundra handles it fine.

I've read a lot of the threads and there's two sides to that. some have issues and some don't. I would see how it works with your setup before spending the extra money and before taking any trips of course. that's my plan anyway. there's a good towing thread that has some videos linked that show you how to get it set up properly, as well as some about what happens when you don't set it up properly...

    https://www.tundras.com/threads/know-before-you-tow.26095/

and Not to beat the horse, but since no one has mentioned it, I'm pretty sure you can be in legal trouble if you're involved in a accident and found to be overloaded. its just a bad plan all around.

Don't let the dealer rip you off that amount of money for a brake controller and install when you can do it yourself. Here is what you need.

I had to hardwire my own brake controller on my 2019 4.6L crewmax because it doesn't come stock with tow package but the wiring is there. Thanks to a good writeup I was able to get it done.

Yeah you said some things and that was about it. You didn't provide any helpful links for him to locate what he may need to do the job and so that's what I did. That's what the forum is for. To help others.

It's the same but all good. Nothing has changed from '14 to present. The one thing that has been updated from tekonsha is the plug and play harness. It has an extra ground cable that is needed.

Unless things have changed there is no plug and play harness for 18+ Tundras.

Yes I do understand and know there is no plug and play option for 18+ tundras. I hardwired mine in myself using instructions that were given from a member that posted on this forum. Install went good. You still need to get the correct harness for the vehicle so that it has the proper ground cable and you can remove the head that would normally be on the plug and play end to hardwire to your vehicle.

Need more info about your Tundra. Is it 4.6L or 5.7L with tow package. The harness you'd need is going from aftermarket controller to the factory hook up for the factory controller if you have the tow package.
