Hopefully none! Has nothing to do with the leak.

Shit that sucks man sorry to hear.
So I went today on highway and just floored it on highway and I did not hear what I heard on your video.
Hopefully it’s just something they missed and your truck will be all good to go.

Opening it up completely or just the valve covers. It's crap that you have to deal with this, I would definitely be pushing for an extended warranty or time to off load this rig.

They do have the 5.7, but wonder how Japan gets the engine from U.S, like all assembled already or they just get the parts and they put it all together.

The Japan-made 3.0L V6 was infamous for being slow and blowing head gaskets. The FJ80 Landcruisers made in Japan were also known to blow head gaskets. But yeah, many seem to develop leaks with low mileage while those older Japan-made Toyota engines would usually blow head gaskets after racking up many miles, usually over 100K.

Not sure why, but Toyota seems to struggle with gasket material when mating different metals together, whether they’re made here in the US or in Japan.

Can someone at least please confirm I’m correct in the pic above where the cam tower is located? In the post I quoted.

Oem tonneau, side steps, spray in liner. Trd skidplate.
From your pic and that angle, it is lower than the cam tower. Lower than the exhaust header.

It is the second lobe below your first arrow. you can see the gray gasket material squished out. your leak looks lower, unless someone cleaned up your cam tower, like a dealer, etc... then you would need to watch that area.20190108_180452.jpg

Been smelling oil for a couple weeks, but didn't see anything alarming when I checked a couple times. Got out my truck tonight and saw this on drivers side rear of engine.9B1444D4-691F-488F-A7A5-731C805F0849.jpg

Took a picture of the passenger side as well it looks clean. I'll be calling Toyota in the morning.

I feel like the more people that are aware of this issue the more people we see have it. The tech that did my repair says he gets 1-2 per month.

Sorry, man. I'd definitely ask to talk to someone higher up and see if they can approve both sides since they're already gonna be in there.

Yeah, I've noticed that as well! I think I posted here that my truck was making some weird noise after the repair. It's now been torn down a second time on the right side, but when the tech got it all back together it was still making the noise. A Toyota region rep/tech is coming to look at it today, so I think at the very lest it's going to need a THIRD teardown. Not too happy...

It seems like a lot of it would be up for interpretation, but I've definitely looked into it.

If it's not a "safety hazard", then a dealer has to attempt to repair something three times that would decrease the value of the vehicle, or it has to be in the shop for 30 calendar days. That said, I don't know if a court would decide that the cam tower leak was one issue, and now this undiagnosed sound is now a separate issue, or if it would say that since the cam tower repair led to this new issue that it would all be considered one issue. Also, I don't know what qualifies as an "attempted repair". The tech tore the engine down again and went to drive it, so does that count as an "attempt" and whatever they try next with the regional Toyota rep/tech will be the second attempt? Or does the fact that they still have the truck in their shop count everything they're doing now as one "attempt"? I don't feel like paying a lawyer to discuss that at this point, but I'm definitely documenting everything being done.

From the Oregon Department of Justice:

To qualify for protection under Oregon’s Lemon Law:
    • A part or system under warranty must not be working. The problem must be significant enough to substantially reduce the vehicle’s use, value or safety.
    • Each malfunction must be reported to the manufacturer or dealer. They will have an opportunity to fix the problem.
    • At least three failed attempts to fix the problem must be made (at least one attempt if the problem is likely to cause injury or death), or the vehicle must be in the shop for a combined total of 30 or more calendar days (60 or more calendar days for a motor home).

I would also recommend you speak with someone higher or call Toyota USA. I had passenger side leak, dealership repaired both under warranty. It’s worth the extra effort.

Yeah, don't give up too easily. They told me "no" at first, but I pushed back and the dealer's service director finally came out and authorized both sides. The master tech also kind of helped talk them into it, so maybe see if he can chime in too.

Yeah, that is tricky. Hopefully they can find the source of the new problem and fix that.
