Headed to the snow in a few weeks and need stupid snow chains as per CA road laws for certain areas. My Tundra is a 2wd but I grew up in Canada and lived there for 28 years. Unless I go bumper deep in snow I will be fine.

I'm trying to find a good tire chain that is easy and won't fly off.. I was looking at the Thule/Konig chains but nothing in my size. I have seen some that just strap thru the wheels but those look sketchy as heck. There was one on Amazon with auto adjusters but a lot of reviews said they are crap.

275/65R18 is my size, seems to be an odd duck when looking for chains. Don't mind spending some money for a quality product.

Love to hear your suggestions. Thanks!

Get some stupid v-bar chains with cam tensioners, if you want something useful, eh.

Bumper deep in snow in 2wd? Must have been in the prairies with a tail wind.

Was never bumper deep, just over exaggerating my frustrations with the chain requirements.

What brand are the ones you are talking about?

I bought basic cable chains. I’ve never used them. But I had a set for my 2x trailblazer and they worked great. I hate driving with them on. I feel like they’re going to whip into the side of my car or truck. But I did buy the extra rubber that keeps tension on it. Like a circular bungee cord. I feel like there was no sense in buying heavy duty chains as I wasn’t going out on the trail with them.

Last year my fellow 2wd Tundra owning neighbor couldn’t get out of his driveway in 6” of snow. Same truck in 4wd floats.

Per chains, let us know what you find OP.

Couldn’t remember if they had stores down there. I don’t know if they sell stupid ones though.
I used to grab a set each year and take them back in the spring. Couple years ago I got myself into a dumb situation trying to help some stupid people in the ditch on the road up to Timberline lodge. Needed to use them for about 1-2 truck lengths. Now I own them forever. Set of chains for 35’s cost me like $140 I think. Still much cheaper then a tow bill like those AWD WRX’s probably needed.

At the time I jumped on this truck I was only looking for something to pull my camper trailer as my wife had a bad ass awd vehicle. Now that car is gone and I’m left thinking I should have gotten a 4wd. But at the time I bought mine it was only 2 years old with 17k miles on it and I got it for 31k which was a steal.

I will do a test fit of the chains before I go so I know how many links I need to lock in on etc. I ordered the ones from Auto Zone as I found in some old threads.

Maybe I will start shopping for a TRD pro. I had my hands on one that was a 15 I think but it had 40k miles, no service records and was a little rough around the edges. Plus the dealer that had it was really slimey.

So get a load of this. These are the chains that are “correct” for the truck pn 1675. They fit like poo.

    4986FFF2-B344-439E-B155-C2C1FC4EA9FA.jpg

I threw the dice and ordered a model number up since they do not classify sizes of the chains, just what tire they fit.

Here is a pic of the 1678 chain

The larger set are still WAY too loose in those pics. Since you do have a couple more notches to tighen them, you should be OK with that size. But if you like your wheel wells, mudflaps, brake lines and ABS sensor cables even a little bit, get them tighter before installing the spider bungees.

Once I drive it a bit I will re-check. I can’t quite get it to the next knot even with the tire in the air.

That law is for all the dummies who come to the Sierra driving a Prius or worse and end up wrecking and taking valuable 1st responder resources away from real needs. Also last time I was up there I watched a guy putting chains on the rear of his front wheel drive. I intervined only because with my luck, my Tundra would be the truck he slid into down the road. About those chains now. I used all kinds before I smartened up and got this here Tundra. I found as long as they fit correctly they all worked fine.

I can't deny I have started peeking at 4wd's. There is a 2016 1794 Tundra at Walnut Creek that looks real sweet.... If I could score a good sale on mine I would consider swapping out.

    https://www.toyotawc.com/certified/Toyota/2016-Toyota-Tundra-2639a4fa0a0e0ae8191a5c0fae4bf1d3.htm

I've already put good money into mine though. TRD brake pads all around, high carbon steel rotors. Michelin LTX tires, TRD rear sway bar Bakflip tonneau cover and some other goodies. I only paid 31k (kbb was at 37k) for mine when it was 2 years old with 17,000 miles and had all services done on time since new. Was too good to pass up.

If you're here in NORCAL they seem to be marking these trucks up. My neighbor went to by the new TRD Pro and it was marked up 20k. Also he wanted to lease it and nobody would lease him a truck. He went to the Reno area and leased the same truck. Had he bought it in Nevada it would have been 20k cheaper than here in the Bay Area. Just food for thought. 20k can buy a lot of mods

I thought the law was you could not buy a "new" car out of state and bring it in to Cali? It had to have 1500 miles on it or something to that effect. I would glady drive out of state to save some cash.

My neighbor wrote me this from his dealings in Nevada. He used Dolan a dealer shit there.

You have to handle the DMV yourself, which is a bit of a pain, but they give you instructions. Have to get it smogged and weighed and apply for a Temporary Operating Permit. Then Dolan files everything for you.
