New owner.. 2013 4.6 upgrade question thread

Okay let me apologize this is might bounce around.
2013 4.6. I have 84k on the clock now bought with 4.6. Anyone know of preventive problems I can do??
I put a 3 inch toytec lift recently and wow it's so much better ride quality.
I hear so many things bad about the 4.6 and honestly feel bad now for even getting it. That being said I still going to put 35s on a 17 method wheel. Yes I might need a re gear but I drive local and maybe once in awhile far but I like the look. And I didnt get a truck to worry about gas either. I was wondering if anyone on here can comment on the 35s on a 4.6 on how "bad" it really is. O cant seeing it being that bad. I tow or put in the bed quads or dirtbikes and the occasional home depot run. I do drive on highway and apparently I'll loss 6th??? Anyway I just wanted to start a thread to see if anyone is I'm the same boat as me or has comment to help me. I'm the type of person to do research before blowing money. Not saying I havent before but... after the 35s I was thinking a exhaust to gain my low end back? Lol Trd intake?? Programer... probably not worth it but. And headlights. I like to get all the 4.6 owners in one spot and even 5.7 people to comment and learn from mistakes and gain knowledge. Yes I search everywhere even different forums. I cant seem to find some tiny info and maybe someone can pop in or even see this. THANK YOU ALL!!

 

I have a 2017 Toyota Tundra 4.6 sr I'm lifting it with with kings 3 inch and putting 35s. I had the same doubts and worries as you.But from what I found and have read in the forums is very mixed.Personally I think you will feel a power loss but it depends on the driving and locations for example if you live in an area with lots of hills you would probably lose 6th.I havent lifted mine yet so this is all assumptions and my own research. Some things that would definitely help is a re gear.It would feel more or less how it feels now.Also my truck has manual shifting as an option so worst comes to worst I can always choose the gear of my liking.

 

The 4.6 isnt a bad motor it is reliable and it all depends on your needs I had the same feeling after buying mine, but after a while I realized it suits everything that I do and need to do with my truck.I dont tow often and if I do its 3000lbs nothing more.I dont have a heavy foot or drive fast.I drive mostly work and back and lots of fishing and offroading trips.My truck has more than enough power for me and I love it.I drive on a lot of hills and do a lot of offroading so from what I have noticed my truck doesn't sit in sixth (stock) on hills majority of the time.Given they are very steep hills but still I'm not worried to much about it Toyotas are well known for there reliability and quality.

 

Exactly the same way I feel. For me right now I want to add 17s with a 35s and worried about the gear factor. And ruining things faster than they should. Qhat is or was your first mod for the truck??

 

Well I had my truck for about a year before I started even touching the mods.First thing I bought was the king 2.5s and that was about 2 weeks ago.First thing I did though was a shorter antenna for the clean look and not to hear the antenna shaking when I go through bushes.The second thing I did was leds for the interior.Truthfully I feel like there is a chance there would be faster wear depending on the driving but I'm not to worried because I am looking to regear either way.Tinted windows and Line X bed spray was done within the first week I didn't want to screw my bed up and I hate the look of no tint.

 

Re gear sounds like alot of money and I dont think I wanna spend that much. I did my interior leds and my headlights led as well. I did my toytec 3 inch 3 weeks ago. mine had tint. My shorter antena I got "real one" and I think it gets worse service but I use the aux anyway. I wanna do exhaust but idk yet. I'm worried about the 35s and 17s right now so much I think i might just go 33s. Apparently 2500 for re gear isnt worth it to me. What you think??

 

2013 TRD DC 4.6 RUNNING 275/65/20 34.1 tall, Toy Tech Boss 3" front 1-1/2 shackles rear. plenty of power . Check out Bucks04 build on 2nd gen builds for pictures and more modes, and only had it 4 months before started mods. A lot of fun and money, but love my truck.

 

Well said.. Reliability isn't a factor between the 4.6 and 5.7...i mean Toyota has some of the most reliable engines in the world. It really is about what you needs are.

 

Awesome! I'm going to be running a 17x8.5 with 0 offset. And either go with a true 35x12.5 or go with the $50 less 34.6x12.4. I am going to do the body mount chop and take the liners out. Might need to cut the inner fender aswell. And the bottom of bumper. I called @toytec and even customoffsets. Everyone at toytec is awesome. Carsen is the man! And everyone seem to say yes it will work but you're going to trim alot which I'm okay with to look bad ass!

 

I have the 4.6 and run 34's. No issues and no power loss. I have a Pedal Commander if I need a little extra....lol.

 

does that actually make a difference. I was looking into it. Btw this my true 35s on q 3 inch 12.5 wide!

 

Looking good man! I’m putting 35s on this week. Had the truck for almost a week now. Plenty of power for me right now. We’ll see what I think after Friday. How’s the truck running with 35s?

Just over 80k on my 2015 4.6 with no issues. Not a huge power loss going from stock to Bilstein 5100’s and 275/70/18 but you can definitely feel it.

 

Fine for me. Not as bad as everyone makes it seem

 

I don’t know how exhaust helps, but it is a noticeable difference. We test drove two trucks that were identical other than exhaust, and the one with aftermarket exhaust had more power. It’s also the one we ended up getting. As far as I can tell, no other modifications have been made.
I also like the rumble at startup, and the drone during acceleration (but not during steady driving).

Bought my 2010 4.6 with 93,000 miles on it back in may of 2017, and currently at 126,000 miles. A 6 inch lift and some 35x12.50’s added to the mix later on, I am more than impressed with this truck. It never crosses my mind knowing that I own the unloved sister of the 5.7 that everyone makes the 4.6 out to be. Regardless, the only quirks I notice about this truck is the shudder I have when accelerating from a complete stop. I’ve installed the carrier bearing spacers which seemed to help, but other than that the truck drives like a dream... And as a side note for shits and giggles I had a buddy who lost his keys for his manual dodge dakota, and ended up locking his steering wheel trying to roll it out of the parking lot. A couple rachet straps, (DO NOT RECOMMEND) tied to my hitch did the trick as I towed him 2 miles down the road screetching sideways like a bat out of hell.

 

Short of a blower or turbo, no amount of power can be added to any motor to make up for the change to bigger tires.

It’s simple physics. A taller tire gives the motor and trans less leverage to apply power. When you go to a taller tire you lower the operating rpm range of the engine, out of the power curve. Today’s engines like to rev up to work.

A bigger exhaust will actually make the problem worse, because a bigger exhaust moves the power band up even higher in the rpm range.

I had a 4.6, which was a fine engine, but putting even a 1 inch taller tire on it made 6th gear useless in the city. Constantly hunting for gears in cruise control on highway. It has the power to turn 35s, but it only has 4.10 gears, the trans is going to be taxed
