Acceleration - Does this sound normal?

I was out driving today and noticed an odd sound under acceleration when I was merging onto the freeway. After I got home I decided to take it out again and do some runs to see if I could duplicate the sound. Right around 4,000 RPMs under hardish acceleration I can hear a "whining" noise (you can hear it in the video right around 10 seconds). It seems to only do it under load as I tried to duplicate it just putting it in 2nd and revving it up to 4k and I couldn't hear it. I may just be paranoid, but I just had my engine opened up (8,800 miles) to re-seal the cam towers, and now I'm hearing this when I swear I never heard it before.

    https://youtu.be/t1J04a1z_sc

Edit: Added this second clip since you can hear the noise in question a bit better. Listen around the 9 second mark.

Maybe it's not so much a "whine" as it is a more intense "ticking". I don't know...it's probably me being paranoid but I'm at the dealer now and am going to ask to drive another one.

So I just went to the dealer and drove a new Tundra they had on the lot. The SR5 I drove sounded nowhere near what mine now sounds like. They suggested I take it in on Monday and have the tech that did the cam tower reseal on mine ride with me. If he tries to say it's normal I'll ask him to take me for a ride in any of their new Tundras and duplicate the sound for me. I was ready to quit worrying about my cam tower job but this has renewed my uneasiness. :frusty:

5.7. I was 99% sure I never heard this noise before my cam tower job, and driving the new one tonight pretty much confirmed that.

The Acoustic Control Induction System (ACIS) automatically adjusts the intake runner length hence the sound you are experiencing.

Thanks for the explanation. What does that mean, though? As in, why would I suddenly hear that on mine after a cam tower job and never before, and not on a new Tundra on the lot?

Edit: So I just looked that up and it says it's meant to reduce engine roar? Mine seems to have increased engine roar since the repair, so I wonder if somehow it got disabled?

    How is your idle?

Wonder if you have an intake leak and it’s causing the whistling sound? If that is true, it will only get worse.

You can test this theory out with some starter fluid. Spray around the intake seal. If your idle changes, you sir have a leak.

Idle and normal driving sound completely normal. Even normal acceleration sounds normal (like it did before the repair, anyway), but when I get on it and it reaches 4k RPMs I get the noise. Would everything else sound normal if I had an intake leak?

Everything would sound normal at idle.

When the engine really starts building vacuum, this may be your squeal.

Try the starting fluid trick. Short bursts.

I doubt that is an intake leak.

Take a look at this video. It may give you an idea on what is happening inside your engine.

Did they do an oil change as be part of the repair? When I got my truck back they didn't and I was half way down on the dipstick. Plus they use cleaners to prep the gasket area, maybe those are mixing with what oil you have left and thinning it out some more causing the tapping noise. Either you or have the dealer change the oil and see if things improve. You need to get that oil out of there anyways, I had gasket debris in mine for a few oil changed.

I'm not sure if they changed the oil, but I did check the oil level after I got the truck back and it looked good.

Since my cam tower fix I’ve towed my trailer across the mountains of BC and at times my engine was screaming and didn’t notice that noise, but I still want to check it out tomorrow if it does it.

I mean I'm used to the ticking "diesel" noise our engines make, but this is definitely new. Also, like I mentioned, I went and drove a new one on the lot last night and it sounded nothing like mine does now, so I don't think I'm just going insane.

Just took the tech for a ride and he said it's definitely not normal. He thinks it's either a vibrating heat shield (apparently he had to bend one to get to a bolt) or possibly a lifter (please not be a lifter), so let's just hope it's a heat shield.

Hopefully not a lifter, they could off got some debris in there that went to the lifters though.

Well, it's not the heat shield and they want to keep it... Sounds like it's getting opened up again. Toyota shot me down when I asked for an extended warranty but having it opened up twice now is really pissing me off.

Update today: I got a call from the service manager today, and he said the tech tore down the right side of my engine again. He took off the cam shafts and lifters, then found a "pocket of air" in one of the valves. He said that doesn't cause any damage (whatever, I'll take his word for it for now), but when he put it all back together and tested it the truck was still making the sound. At this point the service manager said they're having someone from Toyota come out tomorrow to go over it, but it sounds like it's now going to need to be torn down for a THIRD TIME.

I'm honestly feeling worse and worse about this whole thing and don't even want to keep this truck. What would you guys do in my situation? It's probably going to be a battle for any kind of compensation.

That sucks. Will make it very hard to decide on having a dealer tech tear mine(new truck) down if/when it leaks. My 08 has leaked for the last 40k, cause I found the leak well outside of warranty.

Pocket of air in a valve? They mean lifter? Its obvious they screwed something up during the repair if it didn't do this prior to the work. I got them to compensate me $350 for just my cam tower issue, wanted an extended warranty but no dice. I plan to just run the truck to just under 60k and then trade it in. Not planning to keep it long term after the engine was torn down, you might not want to do the same.

Yeah, I don't really know what he was talking about. Bottom line is I'm pissed and I'm not going to stop bothering Toyota until they do something to make this better. Slapping my engine back together and saying "sorry, but you still have the rest of your warranty period" isn't going to cut it.
