I actually hate it when gas gets cheap. Copper prices drop with it, which sucks for someone who sells it.

Fuel / delivery charge related? can't think of another reason. :notsure:

Oil prices being high increase the overhead for production of metals, causing the prices to go up. Delivery is part of it, but I think it’s mostly related to the cost for running the machinery involved in mining and processing. Mines and plants use a ton of fuel and oil just creating the product.

Our profit percentages are relatively static, so the more something costs, the more money we make.

As an example, say I sell a certain type of wire at a 15% mark up:

If a roll of wire costs 100 dollars, I make $15.00.
If that same roll of wire goes up to 130 dollars, I make $19.50.

I’m going to assume that it’s the same situation for the refineries. Higher base costs increase their profits.

In addition to the rise in profit per transaction, higher oil prices are also good for my customers. I’m no economist, so this may not be the same everywhere, but I live in Houston. What’s good for the oil business is good for us. More profits for them means more spending. Many refineries are our customers directly. Many more of our customers depend on the plants and refineries for their business.

Even the electricians who don’t directly do work for them are impacted. When oil companies’ profits are up, they hire more people. That causes more homes to be built, and more commercial businesses to support the residential growth. It’s just really good for us across the board.
When their profits are down, they cut back, and everything else follows suit.

Like I said, this may not be the case for all areas, but it’s certainly the case in Texas. Our branches in Midland and Odessa can barely keep up with demand over the last few months. They can’t find employees, because everyone out there has a job. They’ve actually had drivers make deliveries to plants, and be offered jobs while they are out there. The drivers have made their deliveries, then come back and return the truck keys and quit.

It’s supply and demand. No one is cheating anyone.
I’ll add that I don’t know how you folks in Cali and elsewhere drive tundras with those gas prices. Unless you have a little corolla or something to daily drive, that is a hell of a lot of fuel money a month.

I'm curious what's the most someone has paid for a full tank of gas in a tundra here.

I paid $2.53 in the Philly suburbs this morning. It's even more expensive in the city.

Damn I'm jealous of all these gas prices around the $2 range. Not uncommon for the pump to shut off on me @ $100 and the tank isn't 100% full. $3.30-3.75 around Orange County CA right now...
