I seen these bumpers and though some of you guys that are handy with a welder may find this a way to save a boatload of money. They offer different options (winch mount, light bars, lights) with a rear bumper option as well.

    Check them out.

Very tempting. I've got a co worker with a decent shop and everything needed to weld it up. He's cheap too. Probably do it for free and some beer. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm....

Hey, this is an interesting alternative. I doubt my welding skill would enable me to complete something that I'd find acceptable.... But maybe....

I would weld from the back first anyway, cover pass up front and then use a flapper disc to make it nice and smooth out front. Easy as warm apple pie.

What's interesting is that when it comes to Moves rear bumper... They recommend calling them about "special" difficulties with weld up. :cookiemonster:

If anything it will have to do with a trailer hitch... Your welds will have to penetrate deep into the metal expecially where it goes from mounts to actual bumper I bet...

I'm thinking it has more to do with the weird F-117 stealth design and that it has some pretty off angle welds............Which, come to think of it, is exactly what you are talking about. Dang.. It looks nifty, but you can't stand on it due to the stealth fighter jet angle look. I'm back again to the utilitarian looking, boring, and actually practical Ranch Hand rear bumper.

I'm definitely going to order these in the near future. Finally a project to use my welders on.

Anyone in my area (Houston) is welcome to use my shop free of charge (+ 6 pack of Bud) if you want to do this as well.

The front bumpers are awesome. Best way to go if you can weld or have someone like @Nor7 nearby. More satisfying DIY with friends and beer. (Brauts?)

    If you have a 3 phase welder I'm game....lol

Mine only goes to 200 amps on single phase.

I've got some Elk brauts left. (Given to me) Can't beat venison. I can't stand it when someone says deer/elk/duck/whatever wild critter "is gamey"...........DUH!!!!!!!!!!!!! You could move out here to make it easier for us CO guys. We calibrate welders up to....Lets put it this way. We have lab grade current shunts from 1 amp to 10,000 Amps and a 8.5 digit 3458A Agilent DMM with +/- 6 nano Volt accuracy to verify. (The best DMM made. We only have the best at Transcat) Welder cal... No problemo...

Don't think it's 3 phase but it'll do 230 amps and has a 100% duty cycle at 130 amps I think. I've also got a little 110V wire feed that is really handy for tacking.

Also got myself an early birthday present to fill out my Ryobi set.

3 phase is industrial (three poles)
1 phase is home (single pole)

I have only seen pics of that power Kraft now I know someone who has one I will be damn.

Craftsman welder I think was made by Miller I think... ( Can't remember)

From what I hear I think those Power Krafts are pretty common since they were mass produced and sold at department stores (Montgomery Ward). $200 should get you one. Works like a champ. When I got it I had to open it up and clean out 3 hornets nests.

Single phase 230V, 175 amp welder will do 24 gauge -1/4" mild steel. You guys are good to go considering the bumper is 1/8-3/16th.

    I have never seen one.

Around here you have Miller, Lincoln nothing else.. seriously.. ( harbor freight anyone)

Tho until this year there was a esab plant here after 40 years they move to Texas just this year..

I own a esab machine ,pushed it good and it laughs and keeps coming back for more, tho it is microprocessor welder it does good.

Typical 3 phase plugs, non hospital grade (the best by the way):[IMG]
Over the years I've found that Miller and Lincoln are the best spec wise during calibration. We calibrate welder timers/speed feed too, which is super critical for Military/NASA spec work.

I haven't seen a power craft welder for years. Until now. Obviously was well built to last this long. (Like my 07 Tundra)

In single phase you would have short (excite time) run time or duty time then a long rest period so the transformer can cool down and up the amps again... If you start to soon on the rest period the transformer over heats inturn you loose amperage screwing the weld..

Remember most welders are breakered at 40 amps on single phase.. A/c power and your converting it to DC power at higher amp rate transformer has alot of work to do FAST and getting hot doing it.

If you have long welds and deep welds it's not recommend you stop in the middle only at point to point... If your welder can't maintain amps during the run welds they are toast.

Ditto:The smallest amp rated welders I've cal'd for aerospace/mil spec clients were always at least 300 Amps and top of the line. A bad weld on a duct inlet for a fighter jet for example can be a $10K fuck up. Not so critical for a bumper, but you still want a good welder to match the work you doing. Rules out any Harbor Freight welder.

Yes Mike, most of that I agree with. My welder is 30% duty cycle @ max. 3/16" welds are only for the frame mounts, and that is only 60% of max capacity. Out of 15 years of owning this machine, the overload shutoff came in once. I was welding 1/4" and a lot of it. The rest of the bumper is 1/8" welds and 40% of the machine capacity.

We are not doing 4' runs here guys. These are 1-8" welds.

I suggest watching the install video everyone.

That would be an interesting project. You should be able to tackle that one eventually. heh heh. I'm just curious why Move wants you to call them about the rear bumper kit before ordering. Can't be that big of deal you'd think.

Days Lear jet is alot carbon fiber and a few metals to keep the weight down to save fuel and make better nautical miles ... Aerospace technology has change alot in the past 20 years but still the hats off to Howard Hughes..
