TRD Cold Air Intake upgrade for my 5.7L... Yes/No?

I'm tempted all the time to get one, but the truth is they don't offer much in the way of an upgrade. Your truck already has a cai that does the job. Better to spend your money on something else.

 

I'd install it if it was free. I wouldn't pay for it.

 

I had one on my 2000 tundra. Only major difference I ever noticed was when towing a heavy trailer. The truck was more sluggish with stock intake. Apart from that it makes your engine sound awesome but as a result you keep your foot in it harder and you gas mileage goes to crap...

Just did, and it's a wash. Needed a topper and thought it may help get the MPG back. Nope.

 

Does nothing but look pretty and make a little more noise unless you are looking for a washable filter. Didn't help mileage at all. Might help a little if you're foot stays nailed to the floor.

 

Yeah they do give you a tiny bump in hp and tq but it's all in the high range. More often than not, you lose low end tq when you make changes to the stock cai. @csuviper

 

I installed a $500 K&N "high performance" CAI on my 2007 Tundra 5.7L around 2009 (after doing this upgrade on my Harley along with exhaust and tune, standard stuff). Unlike my experiences with motorcycles and other vehicles, the result with the Tundra was a lot of noise and a more touchy throttle response but that's about it - no noticeable gains where it mattered, hp, tq, fuel mileage. I guess that validates what a lot of others on this and other forums say "the oem cold air intake is good set up". Should have done more research back in the day! I just ordered up a new exhaust system from Keith at DDI's so will do some driving with both of these components on the truck as the next step. If the results don't improve the plan is to go back to the stock set up with a high quality filter. Good luck with your choice

 

If you do buy one and need a second/backup filter, I have a brand new CAI filter (the circle cone) that I can sell. I bought it by mistake and couldn't return it.

 

I use the K&N drop in, mainly to save $ on filters. I'd swap in the TRD CAI if I saw a rediculous deal on Craig's list. Ridiculous as in $75. Would be for looks/coolness only.

Actually I'd pay up to maybe $200 for a decent like new used TRD CAI.

 

If you are after the best "filtration" CAI on the market............S&B, S&B...........Military spec "filtration"The best aftermarket, IMHO, CAI on the market for "filtration" and cheaper than AFE, and other over priced CAIs that's out there, etc. Yes, you can get a little more HP from the aforementioned if you drive at 5000 RPMs ALL THE TIME!!! heh heh

Me too. I'll most likely never find a good deal for the TRD CAI on Craig's List (Although you never know what shows up...) I think I see the S&B in my future. High on my list. #1 is the SDHQ AIP tube relocate kit for $229 mentioned here on T.com.

 

Yeah, I'm going to pick one of those up too. What a great product. You would think Toyota would have the thing where it would be dry in the first place.

If you end up with a S&b, I'd like to know what you think. Just looking at it, it seems like it's better quality than the trd and I like that it's a cone shaped filter.

 

Check out S&B site. They put up their filtration test results against everybody. (nothing wrong with wet filters by the way, properly oiled,they will outdo most dry filters, except S&B's filter.

Can you order just the air box lid with the TRD logo to replace your stock air box lid?

 

Not sure about that. I'm thinking not. The air box is different to begin with. Otherwise you would see a lot of aftermarket TRD logo'd air box lids to fit on OEM ones. There are none to be had. I personally would not do that if it was the lid was the only difference.

 

I drilled a 3" hole in the fender wall and air box then attached a tube to connect the two holes with an AFE dry filter. More air flow without buying an after market intake.

 

I believe the kit only come with cover and you re-use the stock bottom one. Someone will confirm.

 

Correct The top is taller than the original and you get a different connector the the fender to flow more air.
