5160s wth Dakar Springs

I want to get a true 3” of lift on all 4 corners. I am looking at doing Dakar springs with Coachbuilder +1 shackles in the rear. I am leaning towards the 5160s but waiting to see the specs on the new falcon shocks.

I am curios if anyone is running a similar rear setup. How is the ride? Are there any othe digressive tuned shocks you would recommend?

 

I have a AAL and a 1” block currently in the rear with 5100’s. My coachbuilder #2’s just came in yesterday. So I will be removing the block to add the shackles. It will technically be 3” in front and 2.75” in back.

 

5160 shocks only appear to support 1.5 to 2 inches of lift. Icon also makes a digressive shock, and you'd have better luck getting the right length shock from them.

 

The 5160’s don’t come in extended lengths like the 5100’s do?

 

According to the Bilstein website, theyre only good for 1.5 inches of lift for the Tundra specific shocks. I could be wrong tho, its happended before.

I am tracking that the 5160s are only listed for 1” of lift. However, they have the same compressed and extended measurements as the OME shocks. I ran full OME on my last Tundra and I want something “softer” this time.

 

If you are thinking of getting the Dakar springs, you may want to consider the full OME kit (Dakar springs are part of the set). The OME rear shocks are designed to be used for up to 3 inches of lift (last I checked, they had longer travel than Bilstein shocks). Also the front set-up will give you 3+ inches of lift (depending on the coils you choose). I have the medium length (614) coils and got 3 & 1/2 inches of lift in the front.

 

I ran the full OME kit on my last Tundra. I am looking for something that will run softer. Unless I go with the Falcons I am looking at the 6112s on the highest setting with a shim.

 

Know what you mean. The ride is rather firm. If price is not a big issue, have you looked into OME BP-51 kit? From what I read, the ride is awesome on this kit.

 

The budget for the coil overs and rear shocks is $1500.

The bp51 kit does look pretty sweet but twice the budget.

 

I am going to go with the Falcon Sport Tow/Haul kit. I will add shims in the front to get 3 inches. The rear shocks ride 2 inches higher then the competitors. Plus being able to firm up the rear end for towing is a major plus.

Here are the extended and collapsed measurements. Travel is the same for all of the shocks.
OME, 5100, & 5160s
Extended 25”
Collapsed 15”

Falcon & 5125
Extended 27”
Collapsed 17”

A rep from wheelers said that 5160's are good for 0-2" they have the same specs as the OME shocks (as mentioned before)

That made me finally decide on 5160's since my rear suspension setup might be 1.5-2" of lift

 

I went with the ICON’s that give 0-3” range in case I want to add a little more rake. I’m up about 2” in the rear right now.

 

Next week, i'm installing 6112's with 5160's and OME Dakar leaf springs with stock shackles.

Can't wait to see the pics! Was debating the OME packs but I thought they lift the rear too high for the 5160's?

 

I think maybe they do, if you're running the bed open/stock. But I have the shell and rack and bedslide so hopefully it balances out. If it's too high, I'll just add more camping gear.

 

This is what i’m looking to do with my truck, trying for more like 2 to 2-1/2in the front, I just need more payload in the rear.

 

So, it's been about a month and I gotta say, I'm very happy. I love the ride quality and handling. The truck feels "snappier"...for lack of a better word. Let me know if I can provide specific pictures to help. I'll answer questions as best I can

Trucks looks great. Are you running the overload spring with them? I have the same set up but also have decked drawers.

I am not running the overload spring... Yet
The leafs are not quite as "smiley" as I would like them to be, but at the same time, the truck is sitting higher than I'd like (for daily driver business).
Soooooo, I may add sumo springs into the mix later, or perhaps OME OL springs.

All that being said I think this setup puts the front and rear at ideal heights. Coming from A Tundra with a 7" lift I am much happier now. Ride and handling are terrific. My only complaints are personal gripes stemming from bad life choices.

Just thought I'd update my end of this thread.

Since I last posted, I have done 3 things that have made this truck feel and perform PERFECT.
(Obv IMHO)

1) I added SumoSprings Coil springs into my bilstein 6112s

2) I swapped out the OEM bump stops for Wheelers Offroad Superbumps

3) I swapped out the rear bumps for Black SumoSprings Rear springs.

This truck, for my purposes is incredible now.
It snaps back to level very quickly without any hard jolts. Body/bed roll is down to a minimum without it being too stiff and I never ride axle now.
I honestly believe this is one of the best setups you can build for a daily driver, that also tows a trailer, and also goes offroading but also parks in a structure fairly regularly. I'm sure there's a nicer, more perfecter build... But I'm here to tell you, I for one am not looking for it. I'm very happy now.

Here's the back of my CM, loaded with steel shelves from Costco (760lbs) +the shell +a bed slide. So let's call it 1000lbs safely . You can see the SumoSprings are helping, but not to much. That's almost all OME springs.
