You place the carpet you cut out at bottom of the bins and it keeps the noise down. I will take a picture and post it tomorrow.

I tell people to use the carpet they cut out, and line the bottom of the boxes with it. It is made from ABS plastic, so if there is something hard sitting in the compartment, it could rattle. Not any way around it without lining it.

I have the cut-out carpet in there as a liner, and I keep some microfiber rags in there also so the hard tools that I have in there are nestled in the cloth so they do not rattle. If you through a hand full of wrenches in there without the carpet liner I am sure it will rattle.

Like @Boerseun mentioned, the cut out of the carpet will prevent things from rattling around. I have not had any issue with noise or space.

I had to remove mine and just bought the Husky ones for the back that did not go all the way under the seats. I did not want to cut in to it so I sold it online and got the new Mats.

If you need locking storage or feel you will have the need in the future, I would go ahead and get it now. It will save you time and money since you won't be buying two different parts and having to redo the install. Easier to cut it once than have to do it later and take more out.

I just did this mod- very pleased. It took one hour after reading the install threads here. I thought the template was effective. I trimmed my carpet scraps and fitted them in the bottoms. I don’t hear anything.

Merry Christmas to me! Again- great solution if you don’t need a long space. Note I have a small combination vault in mine, so you can still use this to achieve some security. 4190CFF5-3C67-477E-ABC3-A9B26F4C560F.jpg

Tell me about the combination vault. Is it attached to the box or just loose?

I installed my esp storage today. It went pretty well. I didn't realize that the box wasn't symetrical. I thought each side would be equal but it's not so make sure you have the template right side up. I almost made a mistake. I also cut out the template areas around the middle two seat bracket bolts because that makes the template sit better. Also when cutting through the foam, it isn't all one thickness as there are thicker reinforced lines on the underneath of the foam and those areas are harder to cut through and the linoleum knife doesn't really make it all the way through. I put the foam backing that you separate from the carpet in the hole and then cut the carpet to fit in the boxes. And I used some pieces of duct tape to hold the template in place. The boxes are dog eared so you need to cut the carpet pieces with dog eared corners to fit cleanly in the container.

Has anyone made their own boxes and installed? Thinking about making a large wood box for half the side if the truck then installing sub on other side. Or sub in the middle and two boxes on each side....
    Thoughts?

I installed my plastic ESP on Saturday. I used my oscillating tool and it worked great. Very little dust and easy to vacuum up. I trimmed the carpet pieces and lined the tubs. No rattles and no noise. Easy and useful mod.

The vault is attached to the back seat frame with a coated steel cable. Of course, someone could just cut the cable with bolt cutters... so I wouldn’t recommend it as a permanent storage solution for anything precious.

You could figure out a few ways to make it more secure, like drilling through the box, storage bin, and floor of the truck and use short carriage bolts, large washers, and nuts to secure it.

I just use it for temp storage.

Does anyone know if you can cut one large, long compartment or are there hidden supports/bumps that would prevent this?

I understand the smart key system on 2020's utilizes some of the space under the carpet in some or all of this area. Has anyone braved trying to install these in a 2020 yet? Curious to see if there is a reasonable work around to install these since the Tundra has less storage space than my Tacoma did.

Yes, you can have one long compartment. ESP actually makes one like that also. The front edge will be straight through, but the back may be interrupted by the seat bases, depending on how deep to the back you want to cut them.

The ESP kit provides new braces because the stock ones run all the way out to the front, IIRC. In the plastic 3 bin model the seat braces are in between each bin. You cannot just cut one large hole without changing the seat brackets.

Correct. It is possible but will be more than just cutting the carpet and styrofoam.
