What have you done to your 2.5 gen Tundra today?

I have cut about 7 pieces and they keep getting lost cuz they stick to the bottom of my tumbler and who knows where they end up lol. I was actually just thinking I'll cut 2 more and finally just use double sided tape to secure them in. I'll try it now.

 

I did a write up on the cup holder idea with some 2mm rubber. Does the cabinet liner seem like it will keep its shape? I like the idea of the tabs you have vs the semi circle that I did, so I may be redoing mine with a hybrid approach.

 

Nah, then I would have to have a battle with all those super white guys. I know what the best colors are..

Not sure if anyone else has done this, but took out the factory single cigarette lighter plug and put in a cig plug and a USB charging port. Built a new plate to house both units.

Just got to go pop the piece back in now.

 

Can you provide details about what you used for a plate, how its wired and the outlets? I'd like to do this. Was it hard to get the console apart? Thanks

How hard is that piece to remove?

 

Getting the piece off was easy. Just slip your fingers in the vents and pull up. No screws, just pop tabs.

As for the plate, 3mm Sintra (also called Styrene). It is an ABS plastic. You can get at most sign shops. You can get a 12" x 12" sheet for about $6 from Amazon https://www.amazon.com/Black-Sintra-0-118-Plastic-Boards/dp/B00UB1J1N0/ Granted, I buy this stuff in 4' x 8' sheets, so I had a bunch of scrap laying around already.

The sintra is STUPID easy to work with. I use a box cutter to cut out and gorilla super glue to put together. If you need to shape any, a good heat gun, stuff gets pliable, adjust as you need to, and use a little cold water or let it air cool to lock into place.

The plugs are all over the place. I just got mine from Amazon because it came in a dual set.

To lay it out, I used AutoCAD for sizing and placement so I could print a template and then cut the sintra from the template. I uploaded my template in PDF here as well if you need it. Pro-tip, spray glue the template onto the sintra and just cut the lines. Bonus pro-tip, place the corner of the template on the corner of the sintra so you only have to cut 2 sides. I used a nail to mark the center of the circles and then a large uni-bit to drill out the holes for the plugs, and I used just regular drill bits for the mounting holes.

This is a pic from the back. The glue and plastic isn't pretty, but it is solid. As for wiring, you can see I just connected the 2 red wires together with a male spade terminal and the same thing on the black wires. I'm going to plug the spades into the factory connector for power. This way, if for some crazy reason I decide to go back to factory, it is just unplug my stuff and plug in the original.



Overall, this took me about 4-5 hours, but I was taking my time, letting the glue dry well, and doing other things at the same time. If I was to redo it, I could probably get it done in about an hour total if I hammered it straight out.

Overall, there are a few things I would change a little. I would make my plate a little larger to fit better. I sized my plate off the piece I took out instead of measuring the area my new plate was going. Nothing big, just would have made fabrication a little easier.

Notes about my template, it is only for the plate itself. The inner circle is the one to cut out. The outer circle is the outer ring of the plugs (I did this so I could see where they would set). The outer square is the square to cut. The inner square is the window on the back piece. It does not have any of the supports needed to hold it in place. Those I pretty much just made on the fly with the sintra. On the template is a 1" mark so you know if you are printing it to the proper size or not.

 

Stupid easy. Stick your fingers in the vent and just pull up. No screws. Just snap mounts.

As you pull up, you'll see where the piece is separating away, and you can slip your fingers in there and help pull out.

I’ve been wanting to add the carbon fiber look to the steering wheel, dash, and cup holder/gear shift area for some time and finally got around to doing it. Was definitely more time consuming than I thought it would be but I’m happy with the way it came out. Here are the before/after pics:

It's a vinyl wrap that I got from Amazon. Just used a heat gun, razor, a lot of patience to get the air bubbles & creases out, and dropped lots of F-bombs during the process . Here's a link to the vinyl I used:
