Need your lessons learned, brutal honesty here...but I am not trading for a Subaru Outback!

    1. I like having a skid plate, even though the plate will probably never hit a rock. Reason is, way back in '88 I was driving a Grand Am across Montana and hit some sort of horizontal flight furry creature that ultimately went under the car and dented the oil pan to a small crack, and a class II leak, i.e. would bubble up slowly and then drip. Seen the access port on the Toyota brand for servicing and like that idea.

Any thoughts about the plate, type, better options?

    2. Getting old sucks. I have evidently lost some depth perception and have gently kissed parking ballards (concrete posts) when easing the truck into the parking stall.

Thinking that a set of bull bars, not a super fan but I get its purpose, might do the trick. Has anyone experienced the skid plate, bull bars, tow hooks fiasco? I do not want to lose the hooks.

IMO, The TRD skid plate should be one of the first mods on anyone's list. Its a lot stiffer and thicker than the stock one (which is little more than a splash pan). Having a port through which to change the oil, is reason enough.

Now one word of caution. If you have 4WD AND its lifted AND you have a diff-drop, you'll need to either extend or simply remove the middle row of mounting spacers and bolts that come with the skid plate. I simply removed them on mine. The plate is flexible enough (barely) to bend around the 1" diff-drop spacers.

edit: I also have a Bull bar. They're great for mounting lights, but don't offer that much in the way of protection. I would say though if your parking challenge is bad enough to push in the bull-bar, bigger issues need to be addressed :)

Thanks Ron, I saw a new Tundra at the dealer and it had a brush guard, push guard, headlight guards. A serious piece of steel, but so distracting from the truck. I'll check your pic and Aries.

I get nothing but great comments on my front grille setup all the time. All the time. (ie: an attraction) I did lose the bull bar that came with my Tundra which is only good for mounting lights and looks cool. Which is OK.. (Until you hit a deer or Jackalope) Oh, and no one ever commented on my Westin Ultimate Bull Bar that actually did protect my front bumper from getting fracked up when a girl backed into it. ("Backed into it")

I want to replace my bs thin SR5 "skid plate" but the TRD will not fit with my Ranch Hand in the way. I need to talk to Insain FAB about a custom skid and get the cab mount chop done. Shit... there's always something.

That looks good. The grill/brush/headlight/locomotive cattle guard I saw yesterday, honestly looked larger than yours. Maybe it wasn't, but DAMN! It seemed to over power the rest of the truck.
Ranch Hand eh? I'll take a look. Big R stores?

I've seen some big ass grill guards on trucks. Especially in Canada for some reason. There is one area near Muncho Lake, Canada where Bison free range. Might have some to do with it.

Those are ubiquitous in ranch/farm country unless you want to spend all your spare time at the body shop.

The deer bounce off them nicely too, watched it happen on more than one occasion. Although if you hit the deer dead center at 70mph + it will do some damage regardless of what you have up front.

Most damage would occur if not dead center I'm thinking. A corner hit will definitely frack up the side bars and possibly more. A deer hit dead center would surely suck. Depends on the guard. My bracket thickness plus guard thickness is 1/2" thick. I wouldn't be too concerned about a deer hit dead center even at 60 + , but a horse, moose, bison would ruin your day for sure.

yep bank account is running low from it..
    Bingo..

Damage will not cover dead center to do frame bolts. Get passed 1 foot going toward the wheel there is no good support on the bumper making it weak.. you can use the triangles behind the bumper to help support it. Then use high Dom tubing inside the triangles for a stronger brace.. 1/4 to 3/8 metal would be needed. Problem tho adds to much @#_# weight tho.

Definitely not arguing that, wrapping the deer around the corner of the truck will cause plenty of damage, if not more, as well.

But I've seen extensive damage from center hits as well. Plenty of variables to consider.

No shortage of deer incidents in the Texas Hill Country.

Shit X 10. My fiend Scott hit a large bull moose near Ninilchik, AK with his Dodge power wagon. At night. Truck was , well, not much of a truck anymore. He was OK. Front was destroyed. Moose came up thru windshield and ended up in his cab. The reason I have some kind of protection up front.

Maybe big is actually....no big deal at all. The horse, moose, bison, elk, etc.... would not be a good idea coming over the top. I guess anything you do to prevent that is pretty damn smart.
Seen a cow elk hit in I-25 just north of Pueblo on Monday, and we are not especially close to any great land areas that house them, except for a winter heard on Carson. It is damn early to see them out of the mountains and heading to winter down on Carson. She was an older cow and maybe just ill to stray that far from sanctuary. IDK.

Even with a decent grille guard, a tall animal could still come on up to ruin your day. Fate.....

Can't comment on the animal or foreign driver deflection technology options (just yet) but being Canadian, beer is always close by. Here's our version of flora "hops" and fauna "horned heritage" :headbang:
