My Tundra has been chosen for it's first Road Trip over the Honda

We made it last night doing the trip in 18 and a half hours. Yes I one shot it lol. The Tundra turned out to be a comfortable powerful Road trip machine. In other vehicles in the past I would get tired and need to sleep at a rest area but I was so comfy and pumped that I listened to Satellite radio and just did the miles. Went 80 mph most of the way to also keep up with traffic. (cept in some cities) When I hit New Jersey everyone does like 90 mph on I-80 and I-287 so I pushed it up to 85 to keep up with the flow and went back to 80 when I left NJ. My best MPG was in the Illinois Indiana and Ohio parts where it was at the flattest where I achieved 17.2 at an average of 80 mph the other fill ups were 16.2 in the ups and downs of Penn State and NJ NY and CT Traffic. Kansas City to ST Louis was 16.8. I was very impressed with the Tundra and the dash said I had about 510 miles or higher to empty pretty much every time after fill up.

EDIT: I also want to point out that I Filled up for 1.92 per gallon in Kansas City and then cause it was the cheapest state on the route 1.84 just West of Missouri to top off. In Penn state to CT you guys are getting gouged up there 2.60 per gallon that is like a dollar more than I pay at home. That and you guys have a ton of left lane rage hogs.

 

I believe him. I did a road trip a couple months ago and did better than that. I was driving at an easy pace, but I had some in the 19s, even had one that hit 20 if I remember right. I have the info at home.

 

What part of Connecticut did you go to?

Running 76 mph with cruise control on for 400 miles, I got 16.3mpg. Going to try the trip back below 70 and see what the mileage difference is.

 

LOL - growing up we had a 1975 motorhome w/ a Dodge 440 under the hatch. With easy driving & the help of a vacuum gauge Dad could wrest 12 & 13 MPG out of that 27' house on wheels. Almost 45 years later a pickup truck gets barely better. Progress! LOL

 

Nah - you shouldn't pay over $2.49 with only a little effort.
Yes - the left lane is reserved for those Sleep Driving in CT. & we are unable to maintain speed up a hill, you are expected to drop 10-20 mph going up a hill depending on the grade.

So I'm assuming that you came across I-84 East.
On your way back if you take I-84 West, don't stop for gas until you get to the last exit in NY. It's actually also a NJ exit. Route 23. At exit turn left, first light turn left go about 1/4 mile and there are about 5 gas stations and a McDonald's. That will be the cheapest gas around if you have 3/4 of a tank or more you will make it there from your location.

 

Thanks for the Welcome and I will find the 2.49 stations for sure. As for the Left laners it is very weird I don't remember it being this bad when I visited my parents here but there is a right lane to pass em if no one is in the right lane that is.

We actually took I-80 to I-287 North in New Jersey and caught I-95 in New York at the CT Border. Wife got a traffic alert on her phone telling us about something on 84 in Penn state near Scranton so we decided to go that route. We will be taking I-84 back though so I will stop at that station for sure thanks for the info.

 

Definitely WAY worse. I've only been here ~ 10 years, so I'm part of the problem - but this place has gotten way too full for the infrastructure we have. The politicians we've elected have really failed us. It's also an epidemic situation of people who do not see driving as it's own thing requiring full attention, a skill to be honed. Vehicles today make it too easy to get away with passive driving, safer - but at a societal cost.

 

Yeah I-95 is outdated the traffic it has for example in another state would have an additional lane in each direction. Coming up I-95 it was congested for a Saturday and the 2 lane portions were packed. In KC that highway would be widened quickly like they did/are doing to I-435 for example now and soon I-35. I do agree that today's vehicles are contributing to the problem even though they are safer.

 

I'd be interested to know what you can get without cruise. I really think an experienced driver trying to get good mileage can do so better than cruise.

 

I'm not a fan of overly complicated technology, but I do look forward to the day cruise control is preloaded with elevations & maps that it can know to let off approaching a sharp curve, or add a little in anticipation of an upcoming grade.

 

Me and my family have been to San Antonio twice and Mt. Rushmore. The Tundra has been the best roadtrip vehicle we have ever had. Very comfortable a lot of room for the teenaged boys. Just know and accept you're not going to have the Honda mileage.
Planning another road trip to Alabama in late spring with the Tundra.

 

I think more likely it will use more advanced sensors to look ahead. But at that point, the cars will just be driving themselves. Personally, I'm not at all looking forward to that day. I enjoy driving too much. Plus, you know...SkyNet.

On a side note, while I know it's not the same technology, I always have to laugh at the idea of self-driving cars working out on a mass scale when my Tundra can't even figure out when to turn off the high beams.

 

Should be a smooth ride for you. I drove from southern caifornia to tennessee with no problems. Its like riding a space ship haha

I love my tundra for road trips. Best vehicle I have owned this far. Yeah I have to stop for gas a lot but it's still worth it.

I hope to make a drive to OBX 4x4 beaches this summer with my daughter.

 

Well tomorrow night we start are drive back to Kansas City from Connecticut. I might have to do a warranty claim on my Handycam but hopefully I can get it too work so I can show you guys videos and/or pics of the trip. Fingers Crossed.
