Help me, I have a mouse problem

I found some evidence of mice in the truck and when I turn the air vents on I get this foul smell that is very similar to that zoo smell. I don't even know where to start but I have no clue what to do next.

See if any local pet store will let you test a pet snake for a week or so.

Just make sure to leave your A/C on so nobody smashes your window to save it.

 

That sucks. Maybe set a mouse trap in your truck over night with some peanutbutter smeared on the trigger. Or a glue trap.

Other than that, you may have to do some research and find a smell that irritates them. I'd definitely check your cabin filter area for a nest.

Wow, I've heard of people finding things in the cabin filter. But that takes the cake.

 

I hope they are NOT chewing on the wires anywhere...

Update? Looks like that is maybe a mama mouse ready to protect her mouslings.

 

The mouse was dead. It went into the vent and made its way up then tried to chew through the cabin filter. I guess it decided to try a shortcut as the chewing was getting nowhere and it misjudged the opening. The mouse thus became stuck and died.
In the next couple of days I will be setting up traps under the truck and will make sure there is nothing edible in the truck.

I am so happy this issue is done.

 

Stuff a couple of cotton balls doused in peppermint oil under the hood. It's supposed to work well.

 

Oh man glad you were able to find it easily. I think this should be a warning to all of us who park inside especially. I am going to start setting traps and glue traps up inside my garage around the truck. Even tho it is summer i have recently had mice and have caught of them in the house and garage/shop. It does not help having a 3 year old boy who leaves a trail of crumbs and pieces of food everywhere he snacks and eats!

 

Please don't use glue traps, they just torture the mouse until you show up and finish it off. I made that mistake 2x, never again. Poor guy got stuck in a cabinet and had to take him outside and finish him off with a snowshovel.

 

Maybe we should start a glue trap rehabilitation program.....rofl

 

Once you have kids the glue trap is the only way to go. I normally put the whole thing (trap and mouse) in a plastic bag and give it a proper send off under the Tundra tire, instant ending. Conventional mouse traps can break a child's finger or hand. And poison is out of the question.

 

I was thinking the same thing. Denver Int'l Airport parking lots had a serious issue with stupid rabbits getting into cars a chewing up wires. Was something in the plastic that apparently attracted them.

 

We need to stop all this human on mouse crime.

Just a side note; a mouse or rat causing extensive damage to your truck is covered by your insurance under your comprehensive coverage, if you have it on your policy.

 

rodent ate my windshield water hose....droppings on the engine intake cover...wtf..have to replace one hose. I read you should use peppermint oil as they don't like the smell. I'll give it a try.

 

Well now I have an update on the situation. The dead mouse in the picture apparently had a nest. Now the babies are dead and rotting and the source of the smell is unknown. I called the shop and they told me that the location of the mice is likely around the heater box. To work on this would be at least 10 hours and at a minimum cost of around $1000. I am extremely disappointed on this. How could mice enter the cabin at will? the rotting smell is so bad I hate my Tundra. Hate driving it now.

So since I am not spending $1000, my other option is to wait for the decomposition to continue. Once the little bastards turn into mummies the smell will likely clear.

This experience sucks so badly. I have never had a mouse issue in any other vehicle that I have owned. This is beyond ridiculous.

I think i read on here that toyota has a lawsuit against them for using soy based materials in their parts and mice are attracted to newer Tundras. I cant find the thread now. The air conditioner and air system sure do smell horrible like mold!

Starting having issues in my wife's 2011 DC work truck (yes, my wife has a 4x4 work truck; she works on cell phone towers) and found evidence of a mouse. It caused $2K in damages (knock sensor wiring, TPMS wiring, all plastic containers under the hood). Could never find the mouse...until one day I was able to use a coat hanger and reach down into the air duct under the wiper cowl. BAM, there was the nest and mouse. Anyway, set a trap and caught it. BTW, that is one of those big rat traps...this thing was the same length as that trap

 

Thanks louscrw, for the reminder. I'm gonna go put some cotton balls soaked in peppermint oil in the engine bay. Rodents have caused damage to my wife's car, my last truck and my backhoe.

 

dang...I have been using that rodent spray from Amazon for the past month..no issues to report so far. I usually spray the engine bay once a week and the wheel wells as well since those mouses/rats use the tires to get inside the engine bay. crossing my fingers it stays that way...

 

That is no joke. They killed the electric in a Pontiac van we had. Whatever it takes, get those out ASAP! Glue, traps, poison, stray cats tied to the running boards, get them out.

 

The answer is right here on this site on another thread. Just get your hands on a Huntsman spider and let him loose in truck. Problem solved.

 

I replaced a headliner in a Sienna last year. We thought it was just a broken wire. Nope mice ate through the harness in the headliner and the drivers side curtain airbag. All around the sunroof was full of chewed items.
