Hey all! I just joined up on this forum because this morning I became the proud owner of a 2001 Tundra SR5 Access Cab. V8, 2WD. Purchased from a gentleman in Greensboro and I am located in Charlotte, NC. I drive a good bit back and forth to an Air Force base across the state because I’m in the reserves, so I needed something reliable. In addition to that, I will mostly use the truck to haul furniture, yard stuff, and other random items for friends and church members. I also have a motorcycle which will definitely get thrown in the back and taken up to the Tail of the Dragon on a warm Saturday. The truck has 135,000 miles and many more to go! Has a ding and scratch here and there, but title is clean, Carfax looks good, it runs and drives extremely smoothly, interior is in good shape (though apparently the last owner loved spilling drinks...so I had to do a good bit of cleaning today) and there is absolutely no rust. I’m loving it so far. Pics below.

Thoughts? Concerns? Common issues on these models/configurations?

Also...mods? I’m definitely gonna do a bull bar or brush guard and some lighting modifications for safety (and style), such as backup LEDs.

It looks great. At that milege it's not even broken in yet.

Are you of the frame rust recall issue? Make sure the frame isnt in rough shape. The only other thing you need to check is whether or not the timing belt was changed. They have to be replaced every 90k. Most people recommend doing the water pump at that time too.

I am. The frame and chassis are both very clean with only minimal surface rust in a couple spots. I'll be sure to keep an eye out for any problem spots!

I did check this-the previous owner had records of the timing belt having been done at 115k. A bit late, but done nonetheless. I'll have to look through the records a bit more to check on the water pump. Thanks for the heads up!

It sounds you did your research. If you have more service records this may not apply but I also like to drain and refill all fluids. In your case with 2WD just the transmission and rear differential.

Great thought on changing those fluids! Good thing I don’t even need a jack to get underneath this thing...can you tell this is my first truck?

And I went ahead and entered my VIN on the Toyota recall site. It’s showing an outstanding recall item for the frame rust check. Because this truck was originally a state-owned vehicle in Maryland (Carfax!), the recall should apply.

Does anyone know if there is a mileage or timeframe limit on when the dealer will look over the truck for rust and apply the anti-corrosion compound for free? If it’s free, they may as well do it, but if not, since it looks fine currently, I’ll just leave it alone.
