It is tire time for both my Tacoma and Tundra, more so my Tacoma.

I find that a P Metric 265/65R17 is more than sufficient for a mall rated ground pounder. Wife wants the Hancook DynaPro ATMs.

Looking at some of the local tire stores (discount tire, Sears, Cooper), I have been getting quotes for 740-830.00 for these and most high rated tires. Time to go internet shopping....

Since I am a Amazon whore, I find these:

    397.00 + 24.00 shipping.

    https://www.amazon.com/Hankook-DynaPro-RF10-Off-Road-Tire/dp/B004QL68TQ

Not bad if you ask me for some P Metric car tires. Buy a tire rotation package for 70.00 from Discount tire and be into this for under 500.00.

Anyone else doing things like this?

I bought my last set of tires from Discount tire direct. It saved me about $200 for a set of BFG all-terrains for my old Tacoma. I don't know anything about those tires and have never bought tires through Amazon, but that's a lot cheaper then I paid.

DT. You'll need to pay for balancing and such too if you're going to get it offline + shipping.

Shipping is 24.00, and already added into cost.

Mount and balance was not. My local tire shop does the mount and balance for 10.00 tire.

Tire disposal is 1.50 per tire.

Now we are up to 546.00.

Thanks Sean for pointing the added costs out.

Any other costs I'm leaving out?

I do not do TPMS rebuild kits. When the vehicle is close to 5 years old, they get replaced due to battery life.

I usually buy my tires from Discount Tires. They are very customer oriented. I got my new Copper's from Big O only because DT didn't have the size I needed and didn't want to wait a couple of days. Big O is OK. Discount Tires is still my preferred local tire store.

Another factor to consider is warranty. What it warps in 3 months or so? You'll need to have a different tire to sub out the new one while you then need to take the time to obtain a shipping label and wait for it to be replaced...going to DT (or whoever) can do it on the spot.

Discount Tires sells tire certificates for road hazard, etc and the price is negotiable. Usually $25 per tire, maybe more depending on tire cost. Big O has the same thing. Cost me almost $200 which sounds steep, but good for free replacement the first two years and prorated after that, so not too bad.

I never buy the warranties, to be honest. Never have needed one on a DD, and I have a ton of windshield time. Been driving 27 years (legally) now. OK, that made me feel old. I buy popular brands that can be purchased almost anywhere. If I have a tire go bad..pony up for a new one.

On my off-road vehicles I do buy the warranties (tires 37" and smaller) just because it makes sense to do so. You and others that see some off-road trails more than others run a greater risk of punctures/sidewall slices.

My current tires do not offer a warranty, so in the event I eat a tire, I just ate 600-800.00. I also have the option to vulcanize these tires due to being an off-highway vehicle which is helpful.

Got mine from Mr. Wheel Deal (online) was the cheapest I could find in the tire I wanted. I would've gone through DT, but they don't carry toyo's or didn't at the time I needed tires.

ColoradoTJ if you are talking about rubber for your Tacoma you should think about 265/70R17. I love the 70 series on my 2005 Tacoma TRD Sport it looks great and no rubbing at all. The 70 is about 1 inch taller than the 65 series.

I've had two tires replaced by DT under road hazard. Saved me over $400. You never know what can happen. Murphys Law and I aren't friends. One tire had a slow leak. Turns out there was a bubble inside caused by a wire coat hanger. A large piece was still inside the tire. That was a head scratcher for everybody. I forgot what happened with the other tire that was replaced.

The Tacoma never has been offroad and she doesn't want any modifications done to her truck at all.

Now for the Tundra, yeah it is getting some 275/70/18 so I can get out of a load range E tire.

On a 100-125.00 tire, I'll take that risk (as stated earlier, 27 years and going strong of not buying a tire warranty). For you (and me for off-road tires), that makes total sense. The tires on your truck are expensive and you actually used the truck off-road much more than the majority that I have seen. On my last set of tires for the Heep, I did buy the warranty and glad I did. I too used it twice. One was my daughter backing the jeep off the trailer and she caught the rear stabilizer jacks and sliced the tire (it was my fault, not hers. She was sitting on my lap and I was looking in the mirrors and she cranked the wheel really fast. Not surprised out of a 3 year old) and one of those really sharp Colorado jagged rocks we find on trails got me. That was 345.00 x 2 saved.

I always get the DT warranties for the Tundra. Partly because I do off-road but mainly because 34"+ tires are not cheap! I think it was mentioned above that the warranty prices are negotiable which is a true statement and its pretty easy to negotiate these when you are about to drop $1k on tires. However when it comes to the wife's car I'm with ColoradoTJ and willing to take the risk on $125 tires. The most action that car sees is the occasional pot hole lol.

As far as buying tires I have always gone through DT since they will price match and beat anything. I even bought my Pro Comp wheels through DT because they beat 4-Wheel Parts price and that was their own brand lol!

Go into DT and show them what you are looking at and they will work with you. They have access to a lot more than what is just listed on their site.

I recieved an email from DTD to call them to earn my business.

I will let you all know. Thanks for all the good advice.

Another thing I should consider is how old the tires are. The cheap ass ones may have been sitting in a warehouse for a few years.
