I recently bought and programmed a switchblade style key for my 2014 Tundra.

My friend has a 2008 Tundra and wants the same key. Is the transponder chip the same for both generations?

Thanks for the info. That's the exact same key I have in my 14. I just wanted to confirm it would work in my friends 08 before I ordered it.

I've already got the techstream software and the cable setup on a spare laptop.

    Thanks again!

I believe you do need the master and you'll need access to the Techstream software.

A dealer can make you a new master key with your vin number.

The remote you can program yourself I think. Google for the instructions. I did it on my 09 Tacoma with no special tools.

The flip key will need someone with the Techstream software to program it.

Will your dealer cut you a key without programming it to your truck? I only got one key with my truck but it was the master so I had no problems with TechStream programming a cheap ebay remote and two spare keys. My local hardware store cut them for free since it wasn't a blank they carried.

The last time I had the dealer make me a key they wanted the 4 digit number (I think it was 4 digits) that was imprinted on a metal tag that came with the keys. Without it they wanted to pull the driver's side door panel to access the lock and get the code from it. They said that if they used the VIN there was a chance that it wouldn't work because someone could have replaced the locks. They, of course gave me the song and dance about that if it didn't work I would still have to pay. Seamed like they were being a little cautious and greedy so I try to avoid going to them.

If you have a little computer sense and a laptop I suggest getting a copy of the TechStream software. The newer the Toyota the more options you can adjust with it. On my '13 rav4 I turned off the daylight running lights, the annoying seat belt alarm (My driveway is about a mile long with the mailbox at the bottom. I got tired of hearing the alarm as I drove up it after getting the mail), and I set the locks so they don't automatically lock and when I do lock them they all unlock at once vs the drivers door first then a second time for the rest.
