I have a 2007 5.7L Tundra TRD with 300k, no mods. Spark plugs were replace 25k ago, the throttle body was cleaned/serviced 5k ago. The reason for the background is that my fuel mileage dropped by 10-15% about 10k ago. No engine light alerts and nothing from the dealer after servicing even though I told them about the reduced fuel economy.
    Thoughts?

Welcome from NC! Show us some pics of this Tundra you speak of. Have you checked your O2 sensors? There are many variables that could be contributing to this...

Are you up to date on all other services?
Diffs, air filter, cabin filter, etc

Did you happen to get new tires installed 10k ago?

Have you verified tires pressures are the usual?

Did your area switch to winter gas? doesn't explain the change 10K miles ago but winter gas doesn't help fuel mileage.

Truck is well maintained, tire pressure is checked regularly. K&N air filter cleaned twice/yr. The mileage changed in the summer and has not happened before, using same gas station(s). The O2 sensors were my first thought, plugged cats my second, and I asked the dealer, standard reply "no engine light" means they are ok and they did not trigger anything when hooked up to the diagnostic unit. But, they have never been changed....300K (180,000 mi). I like long lasting parts but this might be a little much

Kind of a tough one. That's not a trivial amount of miles for O2 sensors and for what they cost that would be my next try.

Cats are pretty expensive but you may be able to score some takeoffs from a forum member if you post up in the WTB section.

    Other thoughts:

Transmission fluid changes? Dealers love to say lifetime but no fluid lasts forever.
    Any noisy wheel bearings?
On Fords most people change all eight COP's as a matter of course at this mileage and claim drivability gains but not necessarily mileage gains.
Dragging calipers? Sometimes they are slight without overheating/locking up.

    Hope this helps.

The two biggest reasons for significant reduction is fuel mileage is dragging brake calipers (check if any of your wheels are warm after a long drive) and taking more short trips. That big V8 uses a lot more fuel while warming up.

Thanks, I will try a factory air filter and will check all wheel - brakes for free rotation w/o brake drag. Please continue with the Flux capacitor suspicions, didn't know my truck was capable of flight or time travel!

Since you have a K&N filter, have you cleaned your MAF lately?

KnN has better air flow. Switching back isn't going to help. Factory or aftermarket are restricting airflow. KnN cleaned and oiled semi annually is a good program. I'm curious what you are getting. I'm 13 to 15 mpg on average. Closer to 13 in winter on winter blend and using 4 wheel drive more for commuting. I live in Northern Michigan so there are a lot of days in winter that require 4x4 so 12 to 13 is normal. Pretty normal for any full size truck really.

I’m in West Virginia with only 21000 plus mile. The weather had just change here the last two week and gas stations change to there winter grade fuel. Winter time 12.3-13.7 mpg and in summer 15 to 17.3 mpg

Sounds about right. I've barely ever seen 17 with mine other than maybe at 65mph on expressway with no load and a tail wind.

I didn't buy a truck to pinch pennies.

One front caliper is dragging as you suspected. Should I replace both or just one (Cardone caliper $155 ea, Toyota $355ea). No rebuild kits available? Shitty!

I’d do both. You might be able to find a low mileage replacement from a salvage yard; any truck 2007 and up is a suitable donor...

Yes both front calipers should be replaced. Also pads and rotors need to be replaced because they were overheated. Aftermarket rebuilt brake calipers have a high rate of failure but unfortunately that’s usually all that’s available and cost effective.

All the reviews on Cardone are positive? Or are there rebuild kits available in the USA, I am in Canada ?

Toyota part number for the caliper kit to do both sides front calipers is 044780C050, should run somewhere in the range of $30 CAD from your dealer. A tube of silicone brake lube and you’re set unless you need any new pistons. They are available from a dealer as well, around $45 each. P/N 477310C030.

Of course, if you are paying shop labour rate to have the calipers rebuilt it won’t be worth it. If you have the tools and skills to do it, there is money to be saved, and you get a better result than Cardone reman.

Awesome, the Toyota partsman told me they don't make a rebuild kit. I called with the part number and, behold, I will have the parts tomorrow!

Agree and I have had really poor luck with aftermarket brake parts being worth their weight in shit. I have had to re-do 2 brake jobs this year when I supposedly used the "best" NAPA parts available.

I know the Toyota parts are expensive but they did last 300K...why not buy new Toyota calipers and associated parts and be confident the money was well spent.

Rebuilt one caliper (internals were in great shape) but could not get one of the pistons out of the dragging caliper so I purchased a new one from Toyota and mileage is back to previous numbers. The snap rings for the dust covers take a bit of practice but once you figure it out they are relatively ease to install. Thanks to all for your help.

Good deal...my experience has been similar when trying to rebuild a caliper that has been dragging...often times they have gotten so hot I have had to buy new.
