Truck vibration

Alright 1st Gen Guru's!!! Or any Guru's for that matter! I'm attempting to diagnose a vibration in my truck. You dont feel it at speeds under 20, but 20 and over, it starts being intermittent, then about 30-35, it becomes steady. You really feel it at about 65-70. I put new tires on the truck thinking I had irregular wear on my old ones (and he was due for new shoes anyhow). Nope. Vibration is still there. Is it possible to have a bent wheel? I ordered new outer tie rod ends, and the coilover kit because my stock suspension is due for an upgrade. Possible ujoint? I thought they'd give me a thump thump thump or some kind of noise. Rack bushings going bad? (This is also going to be a good 25 dollar upgrade) Upper/lower ball joints?

Its not just under acceleration. You can feel it under steady power, and de-acceleration too. Its not a shaking feeling. Its definitely not bump-steer or DW.

 

Years ago I had exactly what you are describing and it was the U-joint..

 

Found the culprit. Carrier bearing/center support bearing. Through camelback it’s 170.00 I found it on driveshaft parts for 25.00 Anyone ever had any dealings with them? Any other recommended manufacturers??

 

The boss was cool enough to stay after work and help me change out the carrier bearing after work. Took us about an hour and a half (had to win the argument with some rather stubborn bolts). My vibration isnt completely gone, but is better. I didnt need a puller for the carrier bearing. I just pulled it straight off. I can say that I love power tools, and marked where everything went that way it all lined back up the way it was supposed.

It fixed the majority of my vibration issue....but its still there, unfortunately. So the quest to kill the vibration continues....

 

I would do the U-joints also.
It's cheap and wouldnt hurt to put some greasable joints on it.....

 

^^^^^^^^^^What he said. Get greaseable U-Joints. Keep them loaded with grease and they'll last a good, long time.

 

Quick question, and sorry for reopening the thread.

But I accidentally left my driveshafts hanging overnight instead of supporting them. I took the four bolts and nuts that connect the front shaft to the middle. Would leaving them hanging there overnight cause any major issues?

 

Re-connect and drive it to find out. I think you should be ok. Did the OP ever solve the vibration completely?

 

Everything was reconnected. After replacing the carrier bearing, she feels way better than before so I doubt anything got messed up.

 

Sweet! Curious on what the difference is thats making it feel better? In other word what changes do you feel? I’ll be doing mine soon.

 

So as soon as I bought the baby girl from the PO, I noticed that coming off from a stop, the car would shudder very hard. (Nearly wet myself thinking I just bought a truck with transmission problems) The vibrations were pretty hard and the whole car would shake until I got to around 25 to 35 MPH. Once she was in motion on the streets and highway, I felt nothing. After going through this lovely forum I decided to have a look at my carrier bearing which was no more than a piece of metal.

After changing the bearing, no more vibrations, transmission is A OK.

 

I am in the same boat with this vibration. I can really feel it when cruising around 40mph, when I put it in 4wd it goes away. I just had it in the shop for a full day at 4wheelparts. They checked the u joints and drive line, bearings and said they could not pinpoint it so they said to keep driving it until it gets worse, yeah ok . . . I did some online research and found a few videos that might be the culprit. The guy that made the video said my symptoms are about spot on for what he made this replacement part for in the front diff using a clamshell bushing to eliminate the loose needle bearing. Why not just buy a new CV? For a few more dollars?

 

It was my understanding that this is in the front diff which the CV axle slides into.

 

Maybe I misread? Thought this thing slides over your existing CV per your link? Replacing the needle bearings?

 

Take a look at the tech video, removal/install video and FAQ. It would appear that the needle bearing for the CV axle is in the differential.

 

Hi, don't mean to jump in, but I went through hard to correct vibration problem recently. One of the cures i tried was the bushing/bearing replacement you looking at. It did help and is a good upgrade. Wasn't all that hard, but if you get the puller tool from East Coast , you may have to "modify" it so that it will spin in the diff. opening. Looks like this post os few days old so you may be done already. This job alone did not fix my issue, but I had other causes, This is a good upgrade and will elimanite the vibration in the cv shaft. I would do it again.

 

@1xloader thanks for the reply. I have not installed it yet and I did order the tool as well. Do you think it would be worth changing out the CV axle with a rebuild one from CJV while I am in there? What else did you do to help eliminate this rotational vibration?

 

If the cv shaft isn't too old, it should be fine, if you have a an outside micrometer you can get a reading, but if not too many miles it should be ok. This was not the final cure for my issue, I ended up changing my sway bar bushings, (fairly new anyway)but I also did the rack and pinion steering sector bushings. ..they're not much, and weren't bad to change, but the one in the center that goes up from the bottom, I had to cut the metal bushing with a sawzall to pry it our, but still not bad. If your differential ECG bushing change doesn't fix it all the way may want to check these...good luck.

 

I have a 2006 Toyota Tundra, and replaced the carrier bushing about 2 years ago. It eliminated some vibration I was having, but just the other day I noticed some vibration when decelerating between 35 and 25 miles an hour. So I have crawl under and took a look and to my surprise that 2 year old carrier bearing was shredded again. My question is, did I just get a cheap part with weak rubber bushing or is this a common issue? I checked my transmission crossmember bolts and they were all good and tight. Any thoughts?

I'm sure I bought the cheapest one under I'm sure I bought the cheapest one under twenty bucks. I looked up this part on some online supply houses and you can spend anywhere up to $75. and when I replaced it I also replaced all three U-joints

 

The reviews on those under $20 speak your same story.

You’ll need Toyota OEM and it will last another 15 years worry free.
