Awkward level height and need advice with tire sizing.

I have an awkward level height of 2.25" in the front and 1.25" in the rear to give it a small rake in my 2001 tundra 4x4. I was wondering if 285/70r17 would fit under with minimal trim and no rubbing on the uca/frame with a 4.5bs rim. (17x9 -12) If not then I may get the same rims just one inch smaller (16x9 -12 with 4.5bs) and go with 265/75r16. I want to fit the 33" but do want to do excessive trimming with frame rub. Any thing helps! I have found a couple running 285/70r17 on their rigs with just a level (spacer in front) with minor rubbing.

 

Biggest on a 16” wheel is 285/75 from personal experience as this is what I’ve had for years. Its a very slight rub on inside of frame on hard turn. No spacers or lifts.

Not sure about 17” wheels.

 

Professional Hand Model sweet lookin ride! And thanks for the input. I want to run that exact size 285/75r16 but am nervous that I may have to do extreme pinch weld trimming. But seems like you are on stock rims doing fine! Where does it rub? And what kind of back spacing do you have? Also, are you leveled? Or is that stock?

 

Straight stock for years (except for new this summer Bilstein 5100 shocks) on one notch up from stock height (1/4”? Higher). No spacers. You’ll be fine at that size. Just nurse your tight turns a bit or avoid them. Its only a slight rub if it happens. Not a deal breaker.

Inside frame. Never had an issue anywhere else. Go for it. I have the Michelin Defender Series tires. Been on Michelins for long time and very happy. What are you going with?

 

I like a more aggressive tire so Im thinking either Falken Wildpeak AT3W's or Atturo Trailblade XT's. Ive heard great things about those michelins though! Im just on a lower budget since Im in college right now

 

4.5" bs and 9" width will have different results. I want a 16" wheel that way for years with 285/75 all terrains, it rubbed frame slightly and would hit the pinch weld if I am turning and hit a good dip to compress.

A 4" bs and 8" wide rim is about as good as can be, you still may hit frame on full lock turns but nothing bad.

Go for it, you'll trim a bit of plastic liner and bumper but it isn't visible. If you do hit pinch weld badly you can make a single incision and bang the thing inward flat. It's not a big deal.

 

Darkness what is your set up like when you ran 285/75s? And do you know of any decent priced rims with those measurements? Im having a hard time looking for some haha mostly 4.5 bs

 

Rims all depends what your flavor is. I can probably find an old pic of my truck with the 9" wide wheels somewhere. I'm currently running 8" and the fit is way better.

My truck has been modified a lot, couldn't tell you what the lift is. Guessing 3" front and 1.5" rear. Hasn't been stock for 10 years so hard to remember.

 

If you're really concerned go with 265/75. The height difference is minimal, they're a bit skinnier but you'll take less of a hit on MPG and you'll have absolutely no clearance problems. Plus they're cheaper.

 

That one clean tundra! I like it alot, and my taste is all black or black with accents of milling! 9 or 8 inch width doesnt really matter I guess

 

Thanks! Well 9" tends to hit the body/pinch weld. When you turn it has more swingout so it reaches farther than 8".

Not sure if pictures show it but I've painted/scraped/painted/scraped my grille and now it isn't quite chrome. It looks like brushed aluminum.

The shadow on the front tire makes those look like pizza cutters. I actually love that look on the gen 1s and also tacomas. I had 255s on my taco and they were great.

 

Treadwright.com has good tires for dirt cheap. Mud and all terrain. They are remolds but that’s no big deal, they go through the complete tire process. I’ve got almost 15000 on my 35x12.50x20 10 ply and just barely showing wear. Got all 4 tires for $648.00 shipped with a 30,000 mile warranty.

I considered the 255 pizza cutters but when I wanted them my wheels were too wide.

 

So you're planning to do 16 wheels then, @JustGotDuals? 4bs? Check out SCS, if you can find some cheap or used. Most styles and colours are back-ordered but they're pretty!

 

@Sunnier sorry I didnt know this thread I made was still going lol but Ive decided on 17x8 -19 (3.75bs) pro comp series 05 torq with 285/70r17s. Im waiting for winter to go away before I buy them though because my tires now (265/70r16s stock) are still fairly new! I think those rims will work good, what do you think? Oh and the scs are just too expensive for me, I looked haha

 

Yeah, expensive and not available. I was caught up trying to get a set but will probably stay with stock. Unless I can get a great deal on a used set, of course.

I wish I could weigh in on your bs, but I haven't wrapped my head around how to figure it out. I'll probably "get it" at some point, but my brain is full of other less complicated Tundra stuff.

 

I have 285/75r17 , no trimming need since i have a front bumper that doesnt interfere with tire at all. Rims are 17x9 +18 offset

 

What would the forum recommend on my 2001 Limited Access Cab 4WD:
- I like Professional Hand Model's ride. 285/75/16 IIRC...?
- Can I go a bit "thinner"?
- I commute a bit every week. So maybe try, lol, try to get another mpg squeezed in...
- Haven't gone off road, not yet
- Everything is OEM, no lift kit.

@Shellback if you want a thinner tread then take a look at the 275s and 265s they are slightly thinner and only slightly smaller (1 inch) in overall diameter. They will get you better mpgs for sure compared to the 285s. If youre on stock suspension with alot of commute I would reccomend the 265/75r16 size. It should fill the wheel wells good while still look aggressive. Though it has been proven possible with the replies above to fit 285s (wider and heavier than 265s), your mpgs will drop about 3 mpg give or take.

 

I agree with the 265/75's on pretty much any stock Toyota wheel (or 265/70/17's if you go 17 inch wheels instead of the 16's). I've run both on my Tundra for years with 0 issues and it sees quite a bit of off pavement stuff for work and was way loaded much of the time.

 

I have 295/75r16 and had to trim a significant amount of the pinch weld. No spacers. I rub frame on full lock. But I alwso have toytec Boss coilovers. I forgot to measure before and after and I didn't adjust them. Not sure if I got 2.5 or 3 inches or what

 

@because_v8 what is your suspension and wheel spec? Any rub/mod besides the pinch weld trim?

My buddies 01 has those wheels and same tore size, but his 5100s are maxed out on lift and his tires rub the UCA sometimes. So I sold em my spacers. We still need to install em.
