Anyone have any experience with it? I'm going to try to get some elk hunting in this winter so i'm looking at a new rifle since i have a remington 700 in .308 with a bull barrel. Rifle is way to heavy to be carrying everywhere and i wouldn't mind something little stronger even though i think the .308 is still an alright caliber for the job. Thinking of buying a Tikka T3 in stainless steel and .300 Winmag. I shot one a year or so ago and it had absolutely no recoil, but it had a silenced barrel and everything so i doubt it would be a good comparison. Anyone have any issues with the recoil? I know it's up to the person for the most part, just want to hear some opinions before i drop 700$ into a rifle. thanks!

(Also, i'm planning a hunting trip for the fall and looking into Colorado, Wyoming, or Montana for 2 weeks. If you know of any good spots or suggestions, feel free to send me a pm )

That Tikka T3 is a great gun one of my buddies up here hunts with it and absolutely loves it. It will take down anything you want to hunt in the lower 48 for sure. I wouldn't hesitate to buy it one bit if that's what you want. As far as recoil its like you said everyone is different so what you think isn't bad others might think so and vise versa, I don't think its bad but that's me. Hope this helps you out.

I have a weatherbee 300 super mag, and I really like it, but it is a bit heavy and recoil isn't to bad with the muzzle break. If I ever went Elk hunting that's what I would take. But it's a little more than $700.

Thanks. I've been looking more into it. I think I'm going to pick one up shortly. I was pretty torn between the 7mm and the 300wm but I think I'd be happier with the 300 since you get alittle more range and a more standard round.

Both rounds are good, but agreed in the 300 you get more bang for your buck.

    Many to come.
Personally, and I practice what I preach, I'd stay with the .308 for your new rifle. In fact, I'd stay with the Remington. Too many people are going bigger when it is simply not necessary. Jack O'Connor took nearly every large game animal on the American continent with a .270. He even took some animals on various other continents around the world. For many years, the .270 was the "go to" gun for Moose. I kid you not.

Love my Remington 270, one hell of a good deer rifle. I'd want something a little bigger for elk and such, but unfortunately have no experience with 300 Win Mags or much with 308s.

.270 is not bad, but .270 for a Bull Moose? Yeah, maybe up close. Alaskan Yukon moose can go upwards of 1700 lbs. .300 Win Mag? Very good. Very good for Elk, especially if your are pushing that bullet out there a ways. All around is .30-06. How far is your shot? Dall sheep have a tendency to be a very, very long shot although a 150 yard shot is not uncommon to drop a Dall. .270 certainly is a great cartridge. A .270 would wing a grizzly. Better not be too close, because that grizzly going run right over you. Better?? 338 Win Mag or .340 Weatherby Mag for biggest N/A critters is a good choice. Last thing is to be under calibered when you aren't at the top of the food chain. Not everybody can place a round like O'connor (and with his hand loads) could do back in the day. .338 Win Mag with 200 or 220 grain Nosler partition or a Marlin lever .45-70 Guide Gun for closer killing power. Don't use semi's. Sem'i can freeze up and then you may be dead. Always pack a monster revolver as back up as in "I'm not at the top of the food chain here anymore land".

I have used a 7mm and .300 win mag for elk/ deer. I like the .300 win mag.

7mm is good. This subject is like best tire. Depends what you are hunting, where , how far is a possible shot?, etc. Getting into reloading gives you a whole new perspective on ballistics. I've been reloading since I was 12. I still have my reloading hand load log books from back then. Powder type, bullet type, weight, how many grains of powder, new brass?, reused brass?, if used brass I kept records of every time and number of times I reloaded. A very cool hobby. Reloading ia a necessity to know how to do in today's anti gun climate.

Oh, Colorado sucks for hunting, FYI. Way too many people per section to even be successful....in my experiences.

If you have private land to hunt on, you're golden.

Montana has some really good hunting. My uncle has 10k acres up my Hidger/Lewistown area. We would hunt the Judith River basin and come out with monsters.

Colorado is becoming a little over crowded for sure. I'm lucky enough to have my own private property in primo hunting area here and access (with permission) to over 40,000 acres of private land on Sangre DeCristo Ranches where my property is located, and I have access to over 900 private acres above Central City. There are a lot of places to do world class deer/elk hunting here in CO. It's who you know. There is a lot of very good public land here in CO to get some decent hunting in. The average deer/elk hunter isn't going to stray too far off the beaten path. You have to get out and hit the high country. Use a pack horse if you have to. Take the path of most resistance and you reap the rewards. (Oh, always bring a map and compass, just saying)

.308 versus .300 win mag depends - at what range do you feel you can't ethically take the shot?

I have multiple rifles in .308, from bull barreled bench rifles to light weight hunting rifles. I feel .308 is more than adequate to take down elk at ranges I am comfortable with. Just my opinion though.

The .300 Win Mag will deliver a significant amount of more power down range than the 308. Sometimes you simply can't get that close shot. You might be shooting several hundred yards across a canyon. The more energy down range from larger big game calibers makes a big difference. I never locked myself into using one particular caliber "to catch all". I can't see limiting myself like that. Does make reloading easier. It's hard to beat the venerable .30-06 ballistic wise as an all around caliber if you want to go that route. Probably the most versatile cartridge ever made. The brass can be resized for a variety of calibers too, although the .308 can be necked to 6.5mm. I'm considering getting a AR style chambered in .308. Don't get me wrong the .308 has proven itself many times over to be a good all around cartridge. The .300 Win Mag would be a great hunting rifle to have. If you want it, get it, try it, don't like it, trade it, try something else. There's only a zillion calibers to chose from. heh heh.

I really like that.:thumbsup: I figure if I'm going to lay out some serious $$ on an AR style, it's best to go large, skip the .223, head right up to the .308. Why mess around.....

By the way, the 7X57 Mauser is often over looked. It's very, very good all around big game cartridge. My dad had one custom made years ago. FN Mauser receiver, Texas Star gauged barrel, mesquite stock. I loved shooting that.

The 300 Win Mag has a large variety of bullets available to cover all kinds of game. 130 gr to 200+gr. 180 gr is near ideal and the Nosler 190gr. Hell, I want a .300 Win Mag now. Never can have too many guns. heh heh

Amen to that! Have both a 308 and 300 Win Mag on my list of guns to buy, along with a 6.5 Creedmoor and 338 Lapua. The list goes on and on lol.

A family friend of mine bought a Savage in 338, he keeps giving me a hard time saying I need to come help him sight it in. Even better, he wants to zero it out at 1100 yards :oldglory:

I met a guy in Hooper, Utah who shoots a very modified 20 Vartarg rifle.. he produces these videos called "Chuck Hunting" that can be found on YouTube. I want to say I've seen him hit prarie dogs out to 1000 yards with his vartarg setup, but might be giving too much credit.

Pretty sure I was exaggerating - Best shot I could find from him was around 450 yards. I might have been mixing something else in there.

    Many to come.
If you can't get close enough for an ethical shot with a .308 or .30-'06, you may want to take up some other hobby. Just saying.

I've seen those you tube vids. It's amazing how some folks will rig up their truck with a "Prairie Dog" stand in the back of their trucks. Serious shit. Before some of you here start crying about knocking off Prairie pups, get real. Ferrets controlled Prairie dog population. Ferrets got killed of for their fur and now for pets. Illegal by the way, depending on what species of Ferrets. Gee what animal controlled the ferret population??? Coyotes!!! Kill off Coyotes, lots of Ferrets, kill off the Ferrets= 1 bazillion P Dogs. Simple math. No common core math required. 2+2 does equal 4?

For me: 22-250 Rem, match barrel, decent scope= less Prairie Dogs. They are cute though. (Until you prized $15 K bull breaks a leg in a Prairie Dog hole and can't hump anymore.) Horses? Do I need to go further???
