I know this has been discussed but I have a 2018 tundra limited, just got it and love it. However, I live in Nebraska and it is really really cold out. I have to park it outside because my wife parks her car in the garage- It is non-negotiable of who parks in the garage.:( That being said, I interested in getting a remote starter added. Did some initial checking around and prices at various aftermarket places ranged from $150 to $350. I called my dealer today and spoke with there guys and they indicated it would be $595. He insisted that any other starter may cause you to burn out your started and it would void any type of warranty. 1- It seems really expensive and 2 Can they say this will void your warranty if I get someone else do the install

That’s because the one they put in is a piece of crap that remote starts the engine and turns it off after you open the door. That is the reason for the starter to keep turning the engine two times for every time you remote start it. Ive see some on here talk about 12volt solution or eBay has one I’ve been eyeing.

It’s amazing what some of these of guys will say.
My 2019 CM has the h-key. The dealer tried to sell me their aftermarket starter for $500. And since it wasn’t compatible with the h-key fob, I would have had to carry a second fob on my key ring just for the starter. What BS.
I did some online research and found the 12 Volt Solutions starter for $349. It’s compatible with the h-key fob. It was super easy to install. It took me about an hour to do the whole job. Most of that time was spent disassembling and reassembling some trim panels. No cutting any of the truck’s wires, just plugging in harnesses. I had to attach a couple of leads on one of their harnesses to leads on another one of their harnesses. No big deal. You have to “program” the module which consists of pushing a button on the module several times (9 I think) until the little LEDs on the module blink in a certain order. This programming took all of about 30 seconds. Their customer service is excellent and there is an installation video on their site that shows every step. And this starter does not shut off the engine when you open the door as some others do. I am very satisfied with this product and recommend it.
That’s my view. Other guys on this site have had equally good experiences installing other remote starters. I’m sure several will weigh in here.

I have had the Fortin Evo One installed for over a year now and have had no such starter issues. They have a shut off if the vehicle fails to start. Some dealers use scare tactics to get you to get there products since most money is made through sales and services.

I had a local shop put mine in (viper) cost was $315 out the door. I had a choice of either using my Key or another FOB, I chose the other FOB it's pretty small. If they would have used my key it would have been another couple of buck but I've had remote starts on all my cars/trucks and the extra FOB does not bother me.

I have the AstroStart remote starter and it works great...1500 foot range. Not to mention it doesn’t require me to start the truck twice, as you just insert the key to the on position and good to go. The second FOB doesn’t bother me, and I will ditch it in the summer anyway.

Yes took less than an hour, the instructions I receive were on point. It was very easy. I would get the Fortin Omega Flash so you can adjust the setting on the Evo one. I had to change my starting sequence for the OEM FOB from lock 3x to lock-unlock-lock to start. Kept having issues with my youngest daughter pressing the lock button repeatedly and starting the truck. You also can get compatible long range FOB if you want.

Compustar on mines. Great range. If you decide to go compustar make sure the module you purchase is upgradable to a better remote (more range) but more importantly dronemobile which is the route I may go in the future but for now what I got is solid. I feel you on the non-negotiable part about parking in garage. :(

I got a Viper with a 1 mile radius. Probably not that far. I'm not as mechanical as pretty much everyone here so I paid to have it installed. Open the door car stays running. Step on the brakes before the key is turned to the on position and the car shuts off. If I'm going into the store, I can press the button and get out and go in and leave the Tundra running. I regret nothing about getting it.

I would also recommend the 12voltsolutions remote starter - Very easy install.
My 15 year old daughter installed it in my 2018 platinum while I was out to dinner one night with my wife

For those with the viper and compustar remote starters... I have the stock remote starter now, and it drives me nuts that it shuts off when I unlock the door. Do those systems bypass that setting? I have a 2017, not sure if there is a difference in how it interfaces with different years?

I have compustar on my 2016 and the engine shuts off when you press the break without having the key in the ignition. The car does not shut off when you open the door. I have mine programmed for 25 mins to have it extra crispy for me in the morning

With remote starters you get what you pay for, lots of opportunities for issues. Be sure you choose a reputable shop that will stand by the product they installed. I have had issues with many of the top brands, but the dealer made them all right.
