    Hi Everyone,

    I am about to change the oil in my rear diff. Does anyone know how many quarts it takes?

    Any recommendations on oil? Synthetic vs regular?

    Thanks again, I can’t find it anywhere online for a 2014.

    Thanks man, I appreciate the help.

    When I bought the Tundra it has a leaking rear diff seal. I took it to a shop to replace it and told the guy I have no idea if the previous owner ran it low. I asked him to check the breather in case it was plugged and the pressure caused the seal to leak. He changed the seal and said it took 2 quarts to top off and the breather was good. Today I was bored so I pulled the fill plug and air pressure came out. I couldn’t feel oil sticking a finger in and ended up dumping 2.5 quarts in. So I pulled the breather valve and it was locked solid and had brown funk in it. I got that cleaned up and working properly. I’m going to run the truck 100 miles and then drain, pop the cover and clean it up and refill. I called the mechanic and asked if he actually filled it and he denied fixing the rear seal and said he just did the front axle shaft change. My bill shows the seal and labour and it doesn’t leak anymore. So I checked the front and it was 1/2 a litre down.

    I am really worried that i will have to replace my rear end bearings, gear and housing. Should I flush it a few times? It not howling or making any noises.

    I would change it for sure. It’s not expensive and easy to do yourself. Mine is done very 30,000kms so roughly every 20,000 miles. You could easily get away with longer if you are not towing constantly.

    I definitely will not use that shop again. Small town so he will lose business on this one.

    If my rear end is not howling or acting any different do you think things are ok after I change fluid?

    Today I was so mad that I was going to drain it and fill with diesel and run it around my yard and drain a few times to clear out the crud. Common sense kicked in and I decided I will flush with proper gear oil lol

    I'd say it's about time. I just turned 40k but I do tow a travel trailer about 8 times a year and honestly what came out didn't look too bad, but I'm glad I changed it.
    You'll need the 4 quarts and 2 crush washers (cheaper on Amazon, I hit the dealer, $3.15 each). Tighten drain and fill to 36 ft lbs. Also a good idea to loosen the fill first just in case.

    1. Loosen fill plug.
    2. Remove drain plug and let old oil drain.
    3. Replace drain plug using new washer, tighten to 36 ft lbs.
    4. Squirt new oil (about 3.8 quarts) into fill until it starts running out, let sit 2 minutes to finish running out.
    5. Replace fill plug with new washer, tighten to 36 ft lbs.
    6. Hang out in the garage for rest of day drinking beer and avoiding wife.
