So I am looking for newish ATV to do some yard work and plowing with. I know most will say you cant go wrong with any of the big four but I am looking outside of the big four.

Arctic Cat was bought out by Textron in Texas. They get their motors from Kymco who supplies some of the others with motors and word id they are super reliable.

So these Textron Alterra quads have my attention.
    https://textronoffroad.txtsv.com/atv/mid-size-utility/alterra-500

I also was considering Polaris but now I am leaning away form Polaris and towards either the Textron or a Honda. The issue I am having with Honda is no true 4wd they have 4wd but its really only 3 wheels that get the power.

    Thoughts?

We have only had Polaris Sportsman’s when we had ATVs. My dad just got rid of his 2000 Sportsman 500 last year and aside from a water pump, temp sensor and cv shaft, it never had issues. Just normal maintenance.

My 2002 Sportsman 400 never had issues other than maintenance items. I sold it and bought a Sportsman 570.

They are great ATVs and the 4WD system on Polaris units is the best out there in my opinion. It’s true 4WD and their automatic PVT is a proven system. All were used to plow snow in the winters in Michigan and Illinois and for hunting/riding/yard work.

My dad and I both went to a side by side. He got a Ranger 570 and I got a XP900.

To me, the Yamaha is the best all around as far as reliability and features. Yamaha is the Toyota of the 4wheeler market, may not have the latest and greatest features, but they are bullet proof.

I’ll chime in here. As much as I loved magnum 325 2002 by Polaris and its 4x4 features but the square tube frame tend to rot out. I have to say both my Suzuki kingquads are better, 2015 400 and my 2005 700. My 700 has 3800+ miles on her and still running strong, the only thing I replaced was the starter. I plow with both machines and my daughter go on Atv trips every year. Now my 700 has fuel injection, push button 4x4 and front differential lock. My 400 does not, it is an auto clutch but still have to shift gears. Both quads are fun to ride and work horses.

I do like Yamaha machines ( my friend has a grizzly 600). Nice quad but IMO my kq700 handles and rides better.

I would also toss a leg over Can-Am

I’m a Honda man myself as far as utility four wheelers. I have one for work that I’ve put 8700 miles on in 2.5 years, and though I’ve had a few issues with it, it’s the first red one I’ve ever seen having them. To be fair though, I drive this one like it’s a sport quad and it has seen one pretty hard crash not long after I got it.

Entry is $8400 which is about $3000 too much :smash:.

They are beautiful machines though just way out of range for my use.

I have a Polaris Sportsman 700 with a plow. I plow my driveway, about 300 feet and push it that far without stopping without a problem. In total my driveway is about 500 feet long. I don't clean the snow until it stops, sometimes the snow is 6" +/-.
If it goes over 8" I will go out and clean it while still snowing.

Not that I have decided but the Textron Alterra 500cc is $4999 and it can be had for $4500

    Suzuki 500 starts at $7400
Yamaha Kodiak 450 starts at $6200
Honda Fourtrax Foreman starts at $7200 but the 420cc Rancher is $5350
Polaris 450 starts at $6000 and the 570cc is $6700

As far as dirt bikes are concerned I am a Honda guy.

A while back I was looking for a utility ATV and I assumed for a utilty ATV I would pick Honda. I was disappointed Honda didn't seem to offer what I was looking for.

I decided on a new Yamaha Grizzly 550 w/EPS, however the day I was to make arrangements with the salesman a friend of mine offered me two beat up used 2001 Polaris Sportsman 500HO's for a price I couldn't pass up.

I bought them and they are animals! I don't regret the decision. They were my first experience with Polaris and they surprised me.

Occasionally I consider selling both and getting 1 new one. I don't need two and I would like EFI. If that were to happen I would probably go with a Polaris 570 w/EPS. Maybe in a few years....

    Good luck with your decision.

I'm not saying they are the best, but they made me a believer.

I use mine for plowing and taking the kids for slow rides. Occasionally I take one out myself to ride like an ahole. When I'm by myself riding quick it doesn't matter, but if I am plowing or putting around with the kids the EPS would be amazing.

If you ride a quad with it to try it, I think you will want it on yours.

Like driving a car w/out power steering. There is a reason we never went back.

The more goodies the more that can break though.

I forgot I made this thread till now. Not that it matters but I ended up with the Suzuki King Quad 500AXI with power steering. Wanted black but I was late putting a deposit down and ended up with red.

$6250 OTD which makes me happy.

Thanks for all the help deciding.

I've raced both Polaris and Ski-do (Bombardier) snowmobiles and prefer Bombardier for ATVs for there engine's and quality. If you want something to last a long time go with Honda or Yamaha.

My 6 year old got his elan stuck and thought he would plow it out, ended up getting the wheeler stuck also.

If you do a lot of plowing and need a bit more pushing power I use these on the front, can get in various lengths and be careful if plowing on tar/cement not to over spin.

Those larger Can-Ams and Polaris are really nice. They were just more than I wanted to spend for an atv to plow and do yard work with.
The Can ams are in another league

No chains just 25-30 studs per tire on the front.

Just a few other things to help plowing.

    1. A beer holder. 20180219_155115.jpg
    2. A spring pack so you don't bend your plow up from to many beers and over lifting the plow. 20190107_160630.jpg

    3. Put extra notches in plow for bettor angle for wet snow or anything over 6" and replace the cable with nylon rope or strap.20190107_155901.jpg
