2018 Tundra Pre Collision Code Issues

Welcome and sorry...Mine is currently back at the dealership for the second go around on this (2400 miles). Be polite and professional but take no shit from the dealership. I actually can't complain about my dealership as they have been very responsive and genuinely try to be correcting the failures. Defiantly will be contemplating buying an extended warranty if I keep this truck.

 

Yes its under warranty. Its a 2018. Below is a pic of the MPG I was talking about. I started tonight with 4.7 and reset my trip meter and drove to my destination and back. 15.5 miles total. Not going over 45 due to traffic and speed limit at 35mph and my MPG went up to only 6.2. Never seen over 7 since the first day I bought the truck. I made an appointment for next week but I cant see how they can fix it. You can also see the diffrence on my gas meter from start to finish tonight. Only 15.5 miles.

Welcome as well. Its crazy how everyone is getting different error messages. Like I was saying in my previous posts, never once did I get any message. Only the yellow light and would come on and off. Being curious, while the PCS “off” light was on, I went to the PCS menu at it said that it was on, I can then turn it off, turn it on, adjust the PCS sensitivity...all while the PCS yellow “off” light was on. I have an appointment next week so will see what they say. This started right after my airbag recall was serviced.

 

I got the red "BRAKE" warning yesterday for the first time. Clear day on a flat stretch of road with no other traffic. Truck has just over 3000 miles on it. I did have the truck in to the dealer early on for the PCS issue which they could not duplicate. I predict there will be some sort of recall at some point.

 

I agree. Turn that crap off and enjoy your truck. No one buys a 5.7L v8 in hopes of higher MPG. Even the ford ecoboost isn’t that great. But if you needed better fuel economy then stay away from full size trucks.

 

Just an FYI, it takes the amount of sitting and idling into effect when calculating MPGs. So sitting in large amounts and traffic and idling alot will make your numbers fall.

 

I did a lot of research on trucks months before I bought my 2017 Ram. I had a 2007 4Runner before I bought the Ram and the 4Runner was giving me good gas mileage. I knew trucks were gas guzzlers and went ahead and purchased the Ram. Decided to go back to Toyota a year later well aware of the 13/17 MPG’s in which I was ok with. Now everyone knows you just dont get the MPG thats stated but when I’m only getting average of 4.7 - 6.2 MPG, thats concerning to me. I can deal with an 11 MPG being that it is a 5.7 V8 but not 4.7 MPG. I dont think I should just shrug that off and enjoy the truck. What if I was only getting 1 MPG? 4.7 is not too far from that and if I had a lead foot, most likely I would be getting that. I test drove a 2018 1794 that had 126 miles on it and that was showing 12MPG. Bought mine with 2 miles on it, different ball game.

 

Yes, thats certainly is true. Thats why I was factoring in at least 10-11 MPG’s...LOL!!

 

Of course they wont be able to duplicate, never can...LOL!!...Thats why I took pictures every time it came on and everytime it would go off. They can see the date and the time stamp of these occurrences. I have an appointment this coming Tuesday in which I will post the outcome.

 

Update - TSS is ongoing issue for me so I dropped my truck off again a couple days ago to get the PCS/Brake light and head unit checked (random reboots on head unit while using the phone). According to the tech they were able to fix the head unit as it was missing an update but the random PCS Brake light was a different story as they couldn't reproduce the problem. Had a pretty cool tech and service rep who explained the bureaucracy a bit more to me. This is a long winded post but thought it may be of use to some members as this particular problem has been driving me crazy. Bottom line - note the date and time of random occurrences and it will assist your techs and save time.

When you bring your vehicle into a Toyota dealership for any type of warranty work a trouble ticket has to be opened with Toyota and the dealership basically has to prove the problem exists i.e. they witness it happening, see a warning light, error code on diagnostics, etc... then Toyota will authorize/pay the dealership for the work.

As most of you know just about all modern vehicles have an onboard computer system that logs all types of data (a lot of data). Some of this data such as error codes and certain reports are indexed for easy retrieval during diagnostics. Everything else goes into the raw data like a running log

All that being said if an error code is present pointing to say the PCS (easy peasy) - easy to find, they log the code, fix whatever and get paid. Something like these random issues are more complicated to find as its not registering as an error so basically its not indexed in the easy to find place. This doesn’t mean it's not a false report just that the computer doesn’t see it as a software/hardware malfunction so the event basically goes into the raw data as like an event because vehicle thinks it’s doing its job.

The dealership could not reproduce the problem and the PCS systems is not logging an error code so a tech would have to go through all the raw type data to find these random occurrences. They were willing to do this however its a time consuming process and I would have to be willing to leave my truck with them TBD while they go through this data. I opted to take my truck with me and will log the time and date of the next occurrence so they will be able to find it quickly and submit the info to Toyota on my trouble ticket (they did not close it). The tech told me that while false alarms can happen they are defiantly in the unicorn category and if these events are happening semi regularly then this should be an easy submission to Toyota for some sort of resolution. Sucks you have to go through this on a new truck but I guess its a lawyers world we live in.

 

Thanks to take the time out to post this. Very helpful information. Yeah I been doing that. I take a pic when the light comes on, then I take another pic when it is off and then another pic when it comes back on and so on. Pics show date and time when taken. You been having these issues as soon as you drove off the lot, I been having mine right after the airbag recall. It would probably be alot easier for the tech to find the error if this issue has to do with the update but you havnt even had the update, or did you? They could have done the update during prep of the truck maybe? Wonder if you VIN number fell under the recall? Like I said before, others here have been getting different error notifications. Getting the PCS off light and also information displayed in their panel whereas I am only getting the PCS off light. And while the PCS off light is on, I can go into the the PCS menu and turn the PCS on and off but have no control of the PCS sensitivity all the while the PCS off light is on. I took a pic of that as well. So maybe you can mention this to the tech and see if it helps pinpointing the issue? I hope everything works out for you when you bring your truck back and able to fix it without having to leave the truck. Really sucks you have to go through this on a brand new truck. I have to bring mine in this Tuesday for the PCS light in hopes they can fix it while waiting. Im not leaving the truck because the dealer is 30 miles away and I doubt they will give me a loaner car. If they cant fix it, then I leave it as is and when it comes time to trade it in for another Toyota, then they have all the time in the world to deal with it. Let us know the outcome and I will do the same after Tuesday.

 

Toyota is fully aware that majority of the time this issue does not throw a code. The only time it throws a code is if you get the malfunction warning in the center. Issues like dirty sensor on a clean truck or front camera unavailable on a nice sunny day will not log.

 

Yeah the first time was easy to prove as I had all the warning light on the dash so I could take pics, etc... they did the recall and that fixed the majority of the issues. Since that fix I've been getting only the Brake Alert sounding at random times, its happened like 4 or 5 times in about 1500 miles. It always false alerts meaning the truck might think its real for whatever reason but there is never nothing in front of me. Which leads to me troubleshooting and data collecting a new truck for Toyota, actually I'm paying Toyota to let me help fix their issues..smart bastards.

All this just leads me to not trusting my gear

update - Two days of having my truck back I received the PCS off warning light again. I immediately returned it to dearship today and had them file another ticket. I came home and email Toyota Customer service with my issues and pictures. I received an incident and reference number from Toyota USA (weekend so automated reply) I will follow up with a phone call on Monday. I'm basically at the point where I want a full refund or different truck - UNSAT

 

Good luck. I tried, they said it doesn’t effect the usage or safety of our truck. Mine started with 996 miles on it. I still have the letter saying I can go to arbitration if I want. All they gave me was a 8/125k platinum extended warranty

This is with 5 trips to service replacing 3 sensors, camera and safety harness. I still get the PCS off lights.

 

I do not have the exact same problem as some of you, fingers crossed, instead I’d get a random “BRAKE” flash out of nowhere every few hundred miles.... I recently turned the sensitivity to this function one notch down to medium and it hasn’t bothered me since... I can confirm that it still does it’s job (as intended) by telling you that I made a left turn a few days ago while another car was making a right (that I did not see) and almost hit him until my car pretty much auto braked for me along with the red BRAKE light flashing. Hope this helps. Btw I’m at 2900 miles as of this morning.

 

Wow!..that is so crazy. I couldn't even imagine all this when I was buying a new Toyota, lesson learned I suppose. I will wait and see what Toyota officially tells me and then make a decision. The wife has already green lighted me to trade it on another truck (Ford, Ram, whatever) and take the loss. She has been in the truck with me when most of these issues have occurred and I think she is more upset about the issues and process than I.

 

Yup..I have this same exact problem as well. I have the the sensitivity dialed down to 1 and it still randomly occurs. I can't say any time was a legitimate alert. What trips me out about these issues is I would say the majority of member haven't had any problems what so ever with this system.

 

They said it doesnt effect the usage?...So one who drives a $56.000 truck is supposed to just ignore a warning light thats not supposed to be on? Buyer: whats up with all these warning lights on? Salesman: Ah dont worry about them, they are just on and doesnt effect any of the safety features so...do we have a deal??...Lol!!!

 

Yep. Didn’t even call, just sent a letter stating their position and our right to arbitration as customers. It’s a joke. A failing safety system that doesn’t effect the safety of our trucks. What’s the word for that? Oxymoron?

 

I think the only way to get their attention is with a class action lawsuit with everyone having issues. Sad to say. I filed a complaint with the NHTSA but haven’t heard anything. Unless they find out why it’s happening and fix it. But with the 2019’s having the issue, odds are that they have no idea.

Isn’t a class action the way Tacoma owners got Toyota to buy back the frame damaged ones?

 

And makes you wonder why Toyota would wait for a class action rather address the issue before hand. Class action doesnt look too good when one is researching cars or trucks. So most likely I will be wasting my time come this Tuesday but guess I dont have a choice so that my truck can be documented with this issue in case of a class action.

 

Not sure it will do anything either but I will absolutely file a complaint with the NHSTA. If it comes to that though I will be closing the door on my Tundra experience and walking away from Toyota trucks forever.

 

Emailed "Toyota Customer Experience Center" Saturday and followed up with a phone call today. They assigned me a case manger and case number. They are supposed to make contact with me COB tomorrow.

 

Add me to the list. After 2 months and 4k miles the PCS sensor off dash emblem is stating off even when the the main display says on. I have been writing down dates and times and taking pictures of the dash displays on each occurrence. Have an appointment on Monday. I'll do more than just be a burr up their ass if they don't rectify this.

 

Case manager called me today..was polite and listened to my complaints professionally She asked for 2 more days to research the problem and see if some super tech wants to go look at it or has recommendations. I said go ahead its sitting at the dealer collecting dust anyways...driving a damn Taco at the moment which by the way has had no PCS issues with it so far

 

New to this group and will eventually post an avatar. I have a 2018 Tundra Crew max 9k miles with no lift kits or anything to affect the sensor. I started seeing the same issue as you all. I keep my truck fairly clean so it isn't a sensor dirty issue. I took it to the dealer, no code and no change out of part. Bring it back when it does it again was the response. It has been doing this on and off since 1k miles. I passively mentioned it during my 5 k service, but of course it wasn't on that very moment. Around 8K this light came on every other day. I schedule an appointment and guess what the day I take it in, no codes no light. Even though I had a picture of it on. The service guy gave every excuse of why it came on. It was almost scripted. Bring it back if it does it again. I drive it home and the light comes on pulling into my drive way. Uhg . A few days later I am driving and the light comes on again. I drive to the dealer unannounced and the service manager sees the light. But all of the master mechanic have gone home for the day. At this point I am thinking WTF, why did I buy this truck. Finally I come back after making a video of it going off. Pulling over to the side of the road and video that the sensor is clean and the errors popping up on the gauges. Keep in mind that cruise control is done at this point and cannot be used because of the sensor. I take it to them and they were going to offer me a new Tundra to drive while in repair. But the so called master mechanic replaced the sensor and calibrated it. 500 miles no light and then yesterday the light started coming back on. I really don't know what I am going to do with this truck now. I do not know if this will help anyone on this blog, but I believe I have done my due diligence on this matter. And it is starting up again.

 

Been there. I had the Toyota regional tech come to fix mine. He threw his hands up and said to start the buyback. Toyota denied the buyback saying the our pcs safety failures don’t effect the safety of our trucks. I don’t understand. A failing safety system that doesn’t effect the truck safety. It’s a joke. I’ll look for the letter and post it.
