    do want.
For my type of driving a turbo would be better than a supercharger.

Has anyone run a turbo with long term success? It seems I've read things go downhill with the engine after too long. Not bc of compression, but the ecu.

I'd like to know this as well. I've heard Ford has had a lot of issues with their Eco boost engines losing a LOT of their poop at about the 60K mi. mark. Any truth to this?

My buddy drove his EcoBoost F150 to 100k with regular maintenance. Said that he was hearing some strange noises on cold starts before he traded it in but that was it.

I was referring more to our 5.7's, and people who have run turbos on them having issues few thousand miles after install.

I guess I was trying to point out that it is possible that a turbo might put a bit too much strain on components and cause early power loss/failure. There's got to be a reason the big hitters aren't totally on board with turbos and super chargers for all the trucks. Mayhaps Ford is onto something but it's gonna be a while before we see it as common place like TC, ABS and as I recall, disc brakes. Oops, I just dated myself.

I would think that 5psi is 5psi, wouldn't matter if it were via turbo or S/C. Fuel management is the issue. We have that with the S/C from Toyota/TRD to Magnuson . The turbos, not so much. Toyota might even milk the 5.7L until they can put together a gas/electric hybrid. Maybe their next play is to get rid of it and go with the 4.6L and hybridise that. Heck, maybe they'll wait it out till Tesla really gets up and going and team up with Elon. Part of his big plan is to eventually have trucks too. Just kinda running with an idea, no real basis other than my imagination.

I'm not saying this is a fake, but watch the speed of the passing center stripe road reflectors and traffic durring their WOT (wide open throttle) pulls. Their relative speed doesn't seem to change very much from the beginning of their acceleration to the end.

I'm not sure whether I believe this or not because the motor sound seems to match the tachometer behavior, but the ground speed doesn't seem to match the speedometer behavior. At first I thought he was just spinning the tires with each pull, but the dialoge indicates they are accelerating.

However, if this video is legit this is a bragging-rights truck for sure.

    Hey Tundra Brothers..
Yes, that video is legit.., I just found this 3 year old post !
That's my 07 Tundra. I installed that bolt on Precision 78mm Turbo in 2013, its been running great and currently put on 30K miles since.. Its totally not street legal which is why I stayed in Stealth mode on that YouTube comments, but just left it on to share the craziness. Its pretty BadAss fun to have. I've added an exhaust cutout to switch it between Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Its a crazy True sleeper.

The problem with turbos is that most people don't realize they need to let the engine idle after anything more than light use for a few minutes to let things cool down. Otherwise the oil in the turbo gets cooked. Those who buy a performance car realize this. Those who just buy a truck or a grocery getter don't. It's why most companies have stayed away from turbos. I've never driven the ecoboost so I have no idea if you have a clue as to how much the turbo is working. I did have a '90 Celica AllTrac turbo that was a riot to drive but between the boost gauge and from actually feeling the boost you knew when it kicked in.

Synthetic fluids rather than mineral based found in the 90s have greatly reduced bearing failure. Mineral based fluids would carbonize if you didnt allow it to cool. I've owned a few vehicles with turbochargers over the last several years, some factory and some not, and never had an issue.

Plenty of eco boxes out there with turbochargers that are clearly not performance vehicles. Allowing the turbo to cool would be the last thing on most of the owners minds.

My DD is an AMG with 3.0L twin turbos. 375 hp. I drive it like I stole it and never let it cool down.

there are lots of different turbo styles, air cooled, water cooled, oil cooled. the "problem" with turbos is some manufacturers (subaru, ford, other) don't take the time to properly tune them. The other "problem" is they don't put in the R&D to make the engine internals out of the proper materials.

I am a HUGE fan of turbos and if a company like toyota decided to actually put in the engineering to build a proper turbo for the tundra it would be dope AF. I suspect the reason they don't is because it would be too expensive to make it properly. My AMG wasn't cheap, but this motor is MASSIVELY more refined than a ford or subaru turbo motor. Better than BMW and Porsche too

The oil definitely gets cooked and I do let it idle after a run . I use Mobile 0w40 and change it every 2K miles. Got to pay to play right?
    ---
I haven't Dynoed it, but I was curious if the low 4lb boost was as fast as another crewmax that had a S/C... so I set up a drag race at the Vegas Speedway... it was close!

I agree with everything what you say up until you got on my BMW LOL. I drove it like I stole it, even more so after it was tuned.

4 trouble free years of ownership. And so far My new TT’d vehicle has been a blast and hasn’t given me trouble yet....(fingers crossed).

    haha! wanna race? :boink:

I shopped the X3 with M package, the Macan, and the GLC43. I actually really like the BMW, but the engine wasn't smooth. It had some torque spikes throughout the band. It was nice and loud and had lots of burbles but it just wasn't smooth. The macan was under powered and cost 10k more. The GLC43 engine is super smooth and makes good torque very low in the power band. The transmission isn't very smooth though (Macan had the best transmission). In the end I went with merc>bmw because the bmw is just plain. No sense of style. Especially the interior. The merc is very pretty. All the costco milfs get moist when I pull into the parking lot LOL
