Feel free to fact check me, but my understanding is the new Tacomas are heavier than the Gen 2 Tacomas. I worry about the future of the Tundra after the terrible botch of the Gen 3 Tacoma. This "one size fits all" V6 they seem keen to run with only slightly different tunings has completely ruined the Tacoma, I hope they don't decide to do something similar in the interest of squeezing out 1 extra MPG from a new Tundra. I suspect the Tundras we own are the last truly great truck Toyota is going to make, but I also owned a Gen 3 Tacoma, so that's where my cynicism comes from. Maybe Toyota will surprise me.

I'm going to guess that they will. I believe Toyota said they were going to have a hybrid version of every vehicle by 2025 or something like that, so I'm going to guess that they will go ahead and have a hybrid version of the new tundra. If they follow in Lexus footsteps, they will probably have a hybrid version and then a v6 twin turbo version.

Yeah sounds like there is still going to be no diesel tundras and they'll just being going down the route of hybrids.

With the way things are right now, I don't see any reason to offer a diesel unless they are going to jump up to a HD. The price of diesel is so much higher than gas right now that any savings in mpg's is going to be lost to extra cost per gallon. I would rather see a plug in hybrid that can put out the torque of a diesel and still get 30 mpg's.

The 3rd gen Tacoma is an improvement over the 2nd gen in all aspects, except for that 3.5l v6....that engine isn't necessarily bad, it just doesn't belong in a truck.

The engine is fine. It's the transmission and the way it's programmed. I bought a 2018 Tacoma in Feb this year and traded it for a tundra in October. The truck had get up and go and was great off-road. It just was constantly confused driving in town. My 7 minute drive to work has 4 stop lights and some rolling hills. It definitely didn't like that.

The only way I will have 6 cylinders in one of my trucks is if they are in an inline configuration.

People keep saying that its the transmission, not the engine, but I don't think that they really appreciate how different that 3.5l v6 is from the older 1GR-FE 4.0l v6.

The 3.5l v6 produces less torque than horsepower, which is normally not the case for truck engines. The 3.5l v6 does produce similar torque to that of of the 1GR-FE v6 (~270lb-ft), however that torque comes in at 700 RPM's higher. The 3.5l v6 is an engine that needs to rev high to produce usable torque, which is the opposite of what you want for a truck engine. The transmission may have shifting strategies that are optimized for efficiency rather than performance, but the engine itself is lacking low-end torque which greatly exacerbates that problem.

I think Toyota screwed the pooch by going with that engine, but the strategy was probably sound from a business perspective, as it saves them money and many Tacoma owners are 'truck lite' owners (they're car guys who've convinced themselves they need a truck) who are willing to overlook such issues.

I like an inline 6 cylinder. I have one with twin turbos for some muscle. I don't think I'd like it in a tundra tho. My M235.

Agree, and I think the abysmal transmission programming made it worse. When I had my Tacoma, the gears didn't hunt, but it was constantly taking you out of the truck's power band as soon as it could. It was an incredibly frustrating truck to drive. Otherwise, it was beautiful looking and had a nice interior (compared to the Gen 2). A pity.

This may not mean anything and is highly speculative, but I was looking at what vehicles will be at the 2019 Chicago auto show, and there are multiple Toyota vehicles listed, including the 2019 4runner, but not the Tundra nor the Tacoma. In my suspicions mind, the fact that the 2019 4runner is listed and not Tundra or Tacoma might mean there’s something new to show?

I beg to differ. It looks ugly and it looks like they forgot to connect the front bumper. It is just kind of hanging there in no man's land. :puke:

I gotta say, Toyota probably builds the BEST truck on the road but I'll be damned if it's not one of the ugliest in its class. They look like a giant bubble. If I had unlimited funds I'd buy a Raptor. That is a badass looking truck.

You mean 2020 4 runner? The Tacoma was just redone same with most of the rest of the Toyota line. All that's left are 4 runner and tundra. Supposedly late 2020 and 2021

I agree with the first part of the statement. The 3rd gen Tundras are a bit snaggle-tooth in the looks department. Raptors look worse, IMO. Looks like someone took an F150 and had a giant step on it and squish it out a bit.

No, it’s the 2019. The only 2020 vehicle listed for Toyota is the new Corolla. Makes me think they’re not showing the 2019 Tundra or Tacoma because there may be something new to show and they don’t want to let the cat out of the bag yet. Or...they just have listed them on the webpage yet.

I’m assuming, without any actual knowledge, that they just bring ‘last years’ models unless there’s something new. Very few 2020 models have anything to show this early and they probably don’t want to show up empty handed. So I’m curious why no Tundra or Tacoma. They have 2019 models for the highlander, Camry, Avalon, landcruiser and a few others listed. But there’s a few other models not listed and I wouldn’t think there would be changes to that many models.
