My truck lived up to its nameplate today. I had it parked outside and the weather was bitterly cold overnight here (sub-zero). The Tundra cranked for a split-second longer than normal, then started up.

A few minutes later, my dash gauges read -8 on the highway.

Just for fun: I am wondering what is the lowest temperature your Tundra has turned over from a cold start?

How cold is too cold for a Tundra?

Oh shit that’s baby cold! Mines started up in -22f steady up in cold Canada. Just plugged the block heater into the old igloo overnight. Fired up in the morning. Good thing so I could run over to the local trade store and trade a few beaver pelts* for some elk for my dog sled team.

The maple syrup wouldn’t pour worth a shit!

I started mine up in -45 Celsius (-49F) during a cold snap last winter....without having used a block heater. It wasn't happy but it did it, barely.

I try to remember the block heater below -20C.

We had an old 2000 Camry 4 cylinder. That thing would start in -80 without a battery haha

I love it. Canadians are the authorities when it comes to cold. Done and done.

Did your Tundra make the truck equivalent of an old man grunting sound when it started up from -45 last winter?

Heh. Yeah, us and Russians. Met a couple ruskies that could tolerate cold better than a polar bear.

    Oh, funny story on the topic;

I was in Honolulu a back in 2010 over Christmas and New Years. We were on a bus and I got chatting to a local girl. She was wearing jeans, insulated Ugg boots, fleece gloves, a Lululemon hoodie zipped right up, a scarf and a wool beanie. She said she was still cold. It was +25 Celsius (75F). I was in board shorts, t-shirt and sandals and I was sweating like a chicken in a KFC and there she was all bundled up like a ski bunny.

She ended up telling me she was born and raised in Hawaii and had never actually left the Islands. Told her to come visit me in Canada. She informed me that she would likely freeze to death. LOL.

There were all kinds of grunts, squeals, pops and I'm pretty sure I heard a "fuck you man!" and a "back in my day...".

23 in here in Tennessee this morning when I turned on the rental car (4Runner). I was thinking about some of the negative numbers you all are posting on this thread and I was like, pssshhh, this is nothing.

LOL. Where’s that middle finger emoji??? -19 here this morning... :p;)

High -30s would be as cold as my truck has seen so far. But it’s pretty rare I don’t have it plugged in when temps get below freezing. Just so much easier on the motor.

Do you have to use straight coolant? I am Magine besides a block heater there are other precautions that need to be made for someone who lives in that type of climate. Definitely need something in the washer fluid reservoir to winterize it as well. Just curious what all of you cold climate brothers do to stay on top of it.

I know the washer fluid I use is -20. Anti-freeze, not sure. I always use straight not 50/50.

Yeah they don’t even sell -20 washer fluid at our auto parts store. We can buy booster which I use sometimes if I’m going to the mountains. How does straight antifreeze do in the summer months? I imagine it’s not cooling as well as 50-50.

I think the washer fluid is Rain-X or Prestone. It is about the color of the green anti-freeze.

Probably around the -22 -25 with windchill factor of around -50 in north dakota. Grunt groan and squealed until it warmed up a bit. No block heater.

My brother had an aftermarket block heater put on his Taco when he was stationed in Minot. As luck would have it his next duty station was Las Vegas. Not long after he moved there he took his truck to the local Toyota dealer for an oil change. The technician -- clearly a newer guy -- took one look at the the plug hanging just behind the grill and said all wide-eyed, "I didn't know they offered electric Tacomas!"

Block heater, -40C washer fluid and Mobil 1 synthetic motor oil. I honestly have no idea about the coolant, never actually thought about it.

I'll be dumping in a jug of this Rain X stuff this weekend. Haven't tried their winter stuff yet so we'll see.

-20 on an ice fishing trip to northern Vermont, no blockheater as those temps are not common in MA for more than a day or 2
