Double cab vs Crew Max

Looking to purchase my first Tundra in the next couple of months. Aesthetically, I prefer the crewmax for sure. Im a bit concerned about the bed being functional though due to the size. Even the short bed on the double cab seems to be a very usable size. Maybe some of you guys that own one can shed some light on things you like or if you'd do it differently if you did it all over again

 

Like Ron said, evaluate your needs. I myself chose the DC because of the amount of hauling, hunting and camping I do. If I had children I think I would've got the CM.

 

I went the crew max route. I tote 2 12ft kayaks all over, a John Deere rider w/48in deck, pallets of tile, a German Shepard and enough drywall to make your back ache. All while my 4 beautiful girls ride in limousine like comfort. That being said I have 2007 DC that I love so much I couldn't trade her in. Ron is spot on pick the one that meets your needs and I promise you'll be pleased.

 

i'd say that unless you have kids that are playing in the NBA, the double is plenty. The way the door looks is deceiving.. I'm 6'2 and can fit comfortably in the back seat behind my driving seat position. Would i want to do a 15 hour road trip there, probably not, 4 or 5 would be fine though.

For me, it came down to what's more likely... for me to have a car full of 6'+ people on a long road trip or for me to be hauling something too big for the crew bed.... The latter is going to happen a few times a year - the former, never unless my wife makes friends with some hot, tall, Swedish chicks - about as likely as the zombie apocalypse

 

Love the room of my CM, though I do haul a lot with my truck and the 6.5ft bed of the DC would be useful for me. If I did it again I'd still probably go CM, like the look better and I get along just fine with the shorter bed. I haul large things on my trailer.
We've also got a 90lb GSD and a 90lb Husky/Shepherd and the CM rear has plenty of room for both of them and then some.

 

1.if your looking for comfort/style go with the CrewMax you wont regret it.
2. if you plan on moving a lot of furniture go with the DC but you might regret it

 

As most have said ... depends on your needs. I can tell you that I just got back from a 1500 mile trip and my grown up boys never complained about the back seat of my CM. They brought pillows with them and slept like little ones.

 

I personally like trucks with longer beds. It looks better to me, proportionately. If I could fit an 8ft bed in my garage I would have gotten one. I also like 2 door trucks, and the DC's look like it's 2 doors with the body colored rear door handles. I hate regular door handles on smaller rear doors, like the dodge and Silverado shorter cabs. I regularly load 2 dirtbikes in the bed and I like being able to close the tailgate. I've had to move stuff like a queen size bed set and that barely fit, probably wouldn't have fit in a CM. When I go camping, I completely fill up the bed. I just can't imagine having a shorter bed. My kids are 9 and 7 so they don't need more space in the back seat. Would probably be different if they were still in child seats. But the power drop down rear window on the CM is a pretty big deal. To me, that was a major sacrifice I had to make.

 

I myself have kids and feel the back seat of the DC is comfy enough. Plus like the look better.

 

Like everybody above said, choose which one suits your usages best.

I got the DC because I use the bed more than I use the backseat and I fell in love with the under seat storage in the 2Nd gen DC's I've fit 6 grown adults perfectly in the whole truck (I have a bench seat). Although, when my wife pops out a couple ankle biters, I'll probably trade in for a crewmax just for the stuff you have to lug around for a kid. Not to mention they have mods for under seat storage on the 3rd gen crews. Win win for me.

 

I like my DC and I think it has plenty of back seat room vs some vehicles. My 06 Jeep Grand Cherokee could barely fit midgets in the back seat behind my big ass. Gmc 2500 had a ton of room in the back but gas mileage was a super B****. I'm not a Toyota pro anymore so idk is the toyo crew max like a dodge super crew? (Meaning it's sitting on a heavier 2500 style frame?)

 

I went with the SuperCrew. I use the passenger leg/baby seat room more than the extra bed length. However, to make up the difference when on an ultra-rare occasion I need the bed length, I bought the bed extender. Best of both worlds.

Welcome from NJ. You're getting lots of opinions so you probably got it all sorted out by now but if you don't, my 2 cents. I have the DC and a couple big friends who ride in the back on occasion. By big I mean 6'2 to 6'4, 220 to 250 lbs. They both say they are comfortable in the back and don't scramble to get in the front if they're riding with me. These are around town trips not any long term all day riding. I do like the longer bed but that's me. Think the truck looks better.

 

I went with Crew max because I have 3 small children and I don't haul much stuff beside camping gear or my quad. Crewmax bed is good enough for me. Plus I like long drives so it's gonna be comfy

 

I have a Crewmax. With kids at 7 and 4, it was a necessity. Just logged 2300 miles on a road trip and they were comfortable. They wanted mom to sit between them in their car seats and even she was comfortable!

 

Crewmax for me, the rear window option got me lol needed the extra room in rear for the family. Then all my fishing gear

 

+1 on the rear window. such a great feature

 

The sliding rear window gives a lot of flexibility in hauling stuff. I have hauled very long items (8+ feet) on the top of the tonneau cover with rear windows all the way down and part of the item wedged inside the cab. With DC, you don't have that flexibility, unless the item you are hauling is smaller than small opening on DC.

 

The thing is, with a DC 6.5ft or 8ft bed, you don't need to resort having something protruding into the cab area. Not to mention being able to have a camper. It comes down to preference. Whatever works best.

 

That being said^^^, I really like that power rear window on the CMax. I wish my DC had one. Toyota needs to offer more configuration options for sure.

 

I bought a double cab and it fits my needs. I don't have kids (at home) and rarely have grandkids around. I can fit the dogs in the passenger area in a pinch or carry gear and have the ability to lock it up. The bed offers as much space as my full sized 8' bed Chevy with a tool box in the back. I can fit a bike in the back with the tailgate down if I need too. It is more about trailer towing than actual payload for me. I don't like how P/U trucks are more car than truck now days. For the record, and as hard as it is for me to admit it, I found the Toyota to be the most truck like 1/2 ton truck of all the full sized truck manufacturers. The Crew Max makes a P/U more car than truck as far as I'm concerned. I want a TRUCK, not a car. Those that buy the Crew Max are buying more of a dual sport truck the way I see it. You can haul family or friends and still haul some stuff or pull a trailer. They come a bit a bit more pimped out iirc. Mine is very basic, shifter on the column, manual HVAC controls, split bench seat and basic crappy sound system. As it turns out, I bought the perfect truck for me.

 

CrewMax for kids and dogs on longer road trips of 3+ hours, DoubleCab for around town trips with adults in back hauling goods in the bed. I say CM for kids cause they swing the crap out of their feet kicking the back seat, even with short legs they can cause havoc in the DC, but in the CM there is no chance - they have plenty of space to kick and scream all they want on a road trip and it won't touch my front seat. And oversized car-seats won't take up all your room in a CrewMax.

 

I just bought the CrewMax. I'm ove 6 feet and I have a 7 yo. By the time you factor in her car seat, the extra room is helpful and I have to say the automatic back window is pretty amazing. I'll travel more than haul stuff. I came from a Crew Cab Sierra 1500 and never had a problem with the shorter bed on that.

 

........and this is the biggest concern I have about shoving plywood or 2x4's through the back window. Just one sharp emergency stop because some yahoo cuts in front of you when you are traveling 50 mph & you could suddenly have a shifting load through your front windshield, or at the back of your head impinging against the headrest. At the risk of sounding rude chphilo, don't load stuff like this no matter how well secured you THINK it is, it only takes one loose 2x4 to shift forward if you need to make a sudden emergency stop at high speed, and you could have a huge disaster on your hands.
