Hi everyone... Newbie to the forum. I have a 2014 Tundra I bought new in January 2014. In July of 2014 I noticed a slow oil leak from the main bell housing of the transmission where it meets the engine block. The dealership "fixed" it under warranty. At that time the truck had 3200 miles. Fast forward to today... Notice it is leaking AGAIN!! Truck now has 21000 miles. Has anyone else had this problem? Their fix lasted 2 years. What happens when my truck is outside the 6 year 60 k mile warranty? Any ideas? The truck is at the dealership right now and I'm waiting to hear their assessment. I'm going to call Toyota after I hear what they have to say... Ugh... Leaks usually don't get better... Only worse...

yep bank account is running low from it..
It should still be under warranty for now... I find it odd it's leaking again..

Not a normal issue. What did they find to be the problem last time? Bad gasket?

No, Toyotas are usually pretty tight. Had my 2000 Tundra for over 10 years and put over 130k miles on her and never a leak. Sorry to hear about your troubles. I know crap like this is frustrating. Maybe take it to another yota dealer. Should still be under warranty even though it shouldn't have happened a second time.

Yes, they said they " resealed the bell housing and block ant reassembled with a new rear crank seal" So it's dripping from the same area... Waiting to hear the tech's assessment today.

Make them redo under warranty. Doesn't look too good when they have to fix the same warranty issue twice. They have a good incentive to make sure it gets done correctly. My 07 is as dry as a bone. Not one leak anywhere. Knock on wood.

We've seen a few do this. The dowelder pins that hold the rear main seal retainer were not hammered in all the way from the factory. When they reseal the retainer they should tap the dowels in further. I bet there might be a tsb shortly...

I just got back from the dealer. They are going to contact Toyota and open some kind of claim or something... PAS or some such thing. They said then Toyota would most likely contact the regional hot shot mechanic and they would advise on what to do. I'm more optimistic this will be fixed right this time

Look at what they gave you after the warranty work last time. Normally you get 'Life of Ownership Repair Warranty' on repaired items from the dealership.

That's good info. I wonder though if that is unique to your dealership?

Hmm, yeah does have my dealership's name on it but I'd be surprised if your dealership didn't do something similar.

Hi... Just wanted to give an update on the bell housing oil leak on my 2014 Tundra with 20,000 miles (the second leak... first was at 3200 miles). My dealership had my truck for about a week... They were waiting to hear from Toyota on how to proceed. Just as Lotsoftoys said above... They checked the alignment pin length... Factory spec is 5.2 mm, mine were 7.51 mm. They feel this was the problem all along. They tapped mine in to spec and re-assembled with new plate (I was told but now I can't find it on the parts list of my receipt...) and refilled fluids. GOT MY BABY BACK!!! I called Toyota on 7/25/16... A nice rep listened to my concerns... longevity of fix, what happens if it leaks again AFTER powertrain warranty is up, affect on re-sale value, etc... He was going to talk to his boss, the dealership that did the repair and get back to me.... So the Jury is still out on what they will do for me, if anything... You can bet your a$$ I'm crawling under my truck every month from now on... Better be bone dry under there... Hope this helps anyone else suffering the same problem.

like i said before, i figured thats what was causing it. really stupid too because all it takes is a tap of the hammer on the dowel pins to the right depth and your in business... im betting a machine installed the dowels....

Hi everyone... Another update... I contacted Toyota, and a very nice customer service rep named Jay listened patiently to my concerns. He got back to me a few days later, stated Toyota wanted to have happy, loyal customers and offered me a 7 year 100,000 mile Platinum warranty. I said thanks and I would get back to him. I looked up the warranty online... It looks VERY comprehensive. I called Toyota back and asked for the 8 year 125,000 mile Platinum warranty ( you'll never know if you don't ask, right? ). The best they would do is the 7 year. I believe someone earlier in this thread was given the same warranty for a different issue. I feel like Toyota did right by me. I'm a happy and satisfied Toyota customer.

True confessions... I love my Tundra more than a grown man should...

    OP,

When you bought your truck new didn't the dealer give you a lifetime powertrain warranty? All the dealers around here do it, the warranty I have is from Zurich with no deductible and is good for life as ling as I own the truck. I read the fine print and it is actually pretty good, covers the whole drivetrain to include all the gaskets and seals.......for free.

Good call, I'm considering going up to an 18' only because of resale but I can't depend on it anymore though.

I have a 2018, my first Tundra and I absolutely love it. Very refined, solid and with all the recent changes up to par with any other 1/2 ton out there. And to boot I get the reliability that comes with Toyota, I guess that is one of the reasons the dealers in Missouri give you a lifetime powertrain warranty for free. Most people will not need it.
