Water leak in cab

Hello everyone. I am new to this forum as I just picked up a 2002 Toyota Tundra that was my dad's work truck (mechanic shop). It was really nasty when I first got the truck and I have been trying to get things cleaned up and fixed.

I am having an issue that I need help with. I have water leaking inside my cab and the water is coming out the grab handle on the pillar. I just had the windshield replaced because the trim on the top of the window was coming off and water was leaking in from the top of the windshield. That issue is fixed, but now I need to figure out this issue.

It doesn't look to be coming from the window so I don't think it is an issue I need to take back to the window place. It looks to be coming in from above the screw. I have tried to highlight the areas on the pictures. It looks like someone tried to use some sort of calking (spelling?) to fix it previously. Would new trim be the best option, or should I just try to use more calking? Any help on this would be much appreciated.

 

thats urethane used to install windshield you said that glass was just
replaced?

 

The windshield was just replaced. I have no clue the process or what they do, but it was done at Safelite.

 

lol safelite no comment ,did you have a prev leak/rust

 

did tech from safelite tell you what he seen after pulling old windshield, i would bet that there is issue with pinchweld such as heavy rust most common issue especially if it was leaking before hand

 

thats a hack install they offer warranty good luck getting them to honor it....

 

to be honest i dont know what is going on with the roof closer to center cant see whats going on there in pictures. It may not be solely glass install ,,possibly a job the tech should of walked away from (safety wise) instead of trying to fix by back-filling with more urethane

 

one more thing sorry.... the moulding on top/sides is not there to seal out water they are cosmetic after invention of airbags in cars glass install use urethane to secure and seal

 

The tech said that he saw some rust, but the way he described it I thought it was at the bottom of the window, but I didn't look or inspect anything. He said he was able to take care of the rust, whatever that means. I guess I should've looked at what he was talking about, but I figured they would know what they are doing more than I would as I have no clue about that kind of stuff. I think the top center part was done by guys at my dad's work. It was kind of shady looking when I inherited the truck. It's a little beat up and wasn't babied by any means, so I knew it wasn't pristine when I took it over.

Do I take it back to Safelite and see what they will do? Or is there something I can do easily to seal it? Any ideas?

 

I think the water is getting in through the frame on that part of the pillar so I'm not sure it's a windshield issue, but then again I don't know if that is part of the windshield install.

 

never assume ......is he the one that put all that urethane on roofline and drip moulding? water is entering between glass and urethane or a void in it but possibly from what ever is going on with what was done to roof. its leaking in that corner and dripping onto inside of pillar cover... If the install could not have been done properly/ safely because of pre existing issues the tech should of walked away....if the rust was just minor than the tech should/could of grinded down to bare metal then primered before running bead. Again if it was surface rust. I doubt the rust was minor on this year truck especially if it had been leaking prior its usually bad especially if its been leaking before hand for a while i would call safelite back and see if they cover under warranty...adding more urethane is just going to make look more like ass and may stop leak but isnt gonna fix problem if glass isnt 100 bonded to whole perimeter of the pinchweld its not a proper/safe install

 

there is no holes there unless its rotted out

 

pull handle and pillar cover off and pour water in that location over glass and moulding you will see where its coming from

 

The black trim (2 pieces on top of cab) have tabs on each end of each piece that ‘tuck’ into slots in the metal cap.

I know this because I noticed my trim was a little loose and started investigating. I’ve also had a rear cab leak behind the rear seat drivers side (on occasion) and wondered if this is the problem along with the 3rd brake light (being a potential as well).

Looks like someone (in pic is somewhat hard to gauge) has caulked the OP trim and has caused a dam for water to trap near the front glass gasket.

 

hate to say this but I'd go to a reputable body shop and see what they have to say. that is just ugly all the way around.

 

I think someone prior to the glass install caulked that top cap trim to prevent a prior leak. OP said it was a beater truck (in rough shape) for a repair shop.

I think there are multiple problems going on that probably can be fixed DIY.

its not a gasket.....its rubber trim its not there to seal its there to cover the space between the glass and body gasket set glass is almost a thing of the past all cars with airbags are urethane(not caulking) set

 

I pulled the handle and pillar off yesterday and I poured water on the spot I thought the leak would be and nothing leaked on the interior. I am stumped at this point.

I’m thinking maybe the leak was frozen closed for now. It was in the 20’s outside when I was doing this. That sounds crazy but that is the only thing I can think of.

I will wait for it to warm up a bit and do it all over again. Or wait until it starts leaking again and pull everything apart.
