Hello everyone. I’m trying to fix my brake problems on my own and I have determined that my loss of brake fluid is because the master cylinder is leaking into the booster. I thought I could just order a new master cylinder but my local auto parts store is having trouble finding the right one. I’m hoping one of you gentlemen would be so kind to look at this photo and tell me what I am looking at. The master cylinder looks like it’s comprised of two separate components, do you suppose this is going to come as one large assembly or am I only Replacing one Component or the other?
    Thank you

I picked up a new master cylinder for my 2003 sequoia at Napa. From what I remember I could get one from Toyota and it sounded like it came with just the lower section and not the reservoir on top. I went with the Napa brand one and it works great, It was much less expensive. I want to say around $120. You might have to replace the booster if brake fluid leaked into it. Maybe someone else will have some more info for you.

Thank you for the reply. I should have been more specific. The master cylinder itself looks like it’s split. I can see a seam and gasket with a couple bolts holding the front and back portion together.

Interesting. Mine didn’t have that little piece in between the booster and the master cylinder that I remember. Pretty sure my brake lines went into the side of the front piece. That must be something they changed through the years.

Update: No-one carries a new master cylinder for my truck as far as I could find. Cardone has re-manufactured cylinders in their catalog (listed as a 2004 even though mine is a 2005) but nobody has them and Cardone has no cores available to rebuild. Toyota had them as a kit that includes the booster for over $1000.

Finally I found a local auto parts store that offered to send my cylinder to Cardone to get rebuilt. So now my truck is parked until that thing comes back. This will cost $250 but better than $1000. So far it's been parked 2 weeks.

These are the stories that scare me about our trucks. Just because of age some of these things are going start to break and replacing things can get really expensive. I'm glad you found a good solution.

Agreed WTH $1000? I can get an entire JDM engine for that much. That’s insane.

Update: Ever since getting my master cylinder back from Oreilly's (they sent it to Cardone to get rebuilt) I have had mushy brake pedal problems. I bled it out multiple times over the last few months thinking I just didn't get the air out. Finally threw my hands up and took it to my local mechanic who is very experience and I trust. He said that it has to be the master cylinder causing the issues. I called Oreilly and explained the problem. They have not called back.

See if you can just get your money back and get another one from Napa. That’s what I did and it still working great. Unless you want to go Toyota.

I will try. Napa had one in their catalog at the time, but their inventory was zero at the time I needed it. I checked every website and local business with no luck. Maybe they're back in stock now.

    Nothing major
Had the same thing happen on a Chevy Silverado. Kept adding brake fluid and couldn't find the leak. Eventually the power booster got enough fluid to get sucked into the motor. Caught on fire. Just past warranty period. Chevy did nothing about it. Last Chevy I will ever buy.

Oreilly gave me another reman under warranty. So far so good. Brakes are finally feeling normal.
