Dig the 4Runner wheels! I got mine from a '12 FJCruiser.

 

stock size for the pre-facelift (2000-2002) first gens are 245/75/r16 or 265/70/16.

I believe most pre-facelift SR5s have these alloys. I don't know the facelift models as well.

 

Depends on year. Pre 04 most have the one I think of as the starfish, it's a twisted 5 spoke where the spokes are triangular.


04 and up most came with a really cool 10 spoke which is really like a straight 5 spoke but each one is split.

 

Almost all the SR5s I see around have this wheel. 16"x7" 04 and later had the split spokes which are 17"x 7" or 7.5" wide.

 

Those ones really don't aesthetically appeal to me.

 

My '02 SR5 came with these.

 

I don't care for them either. I'm kinda OCD about symmetry(amongst other peculiarities) and a 5 spoke wheel with 6 lugs isn't. 6 lugs need 6 or 12 spokes, 5 lugs would need 5 or 10 spokes. The 4th Gen 4Runners came with nice 6 lug 6 spoke wheels in 16", 17", and 18". SR5, Sport, and LTD., respectively.

 

Odd numbers are more appeasing to the eye. Studies have shown!

What I like about these wheels is everyone has for the most part switched over to other options making these rare. I’ve been seeing alot more of those CJ/4runner wheels on other vehicles the road. They look nice from the side, but kinda dish flat looking when viewed straight on.

 

The 5 spoke star type is what is on my 01 sr5, kind of leaning towards the 10 spoke ones, also looking for new center caps. Thanks for pictures, helps a lot

 

Let us know the price tag on those. Last I checked $1200?

 

My neighbor has those 10 spoke on his 05’ Sequoia and they are sharp looking.

 

$1200 for plastic caps that r going to lose the paint like the ones that I was looking to replace is f***in insane,has to be other options

 

Can u powder coat plastic ??

 

I rattle canned my plastic center caps with Rustoleum flat black. Prepped properly and sprayed they have held nicely.

 

That price was for wheels. The caps? I remember them being $50-150 a pop FOR JUST THE CAPS depending on style. Stealership/online prices vary too, but...

 

$1200 for the oem 17" ten spokes? A joke right?

 

I recently did this with the center caps on my 16" Tacoma rims and you are very correct! Sand em lightly, prime, then paint. I used the satin black. Mostly because I use it to touch up the sliders and bumper on the 4rnr. But always Rustoleum!

 

Keep in mind that the OEM wheels are forged and not cast like most aftermarket options. They are much stronger and lighter weight. A lot of guys like the OEM wheels for that.

Best bet is source a set from a salvage yard or stroll along craigslist. I had my set of starfish on the side of the house for 6 years without a need. Eventually gave them to my buddy for his totalled sequoia in exchange for the rims I have today.

 

This is true, it's the rule when decorating fish tanks.

I like those starfish wheels, just needed more backspace. I've seen them powder coated other colors and run without caps, they look more off roady that way.

 

You don't need to convince me brotha! All I've ever run is oem wheels. I'm just surprised at the cost. Those rims go for about a quarter of that cost here on CL. I picked up mine off CL, five rims, caps, lugs, and locking lugs all for $380. Came off of a 2012 FJCruiser TTE, 17x7.5" wide.

 

Are these the 10 spokes we're talking about?

The starfish rims always remind me of Patrick on Sponge Bob Square Pants. Dude is funny.

As far as used wheels, those brand new CJ aluminum ones that look like dish plates brand new are $1200 on CL (rare find and proud pricing). The used 00’-06’ range $250-$500 (if with tires). Usually beat up pretty good too.

 

just an FYI, RockAuto has the 10 spoke Tundra/Sequoia wheels for $120 a piece.

I got the steering rack pushed away just enough to slide the bolts and cams out. Got the lower arms out and noted that I need new cams and cam bolts. After being on here for 15 years they developed a lot of rust and one of them managed to cross thread on its way out.



Got my skid plate off as well. One of the square nuts bolts that was welded in place just inboard of the front lower control arm mount is no longer welded in place. I'm going to clean up the hole and sink a nutsert there.

Tried the stupid way to push the lca bushings out but saw it wasn't gonna work. That involves putting a small hydraulic jack inside the arm and pushing the bushings out. It wasn't happening, as soon as slight pressure was placed I could see the arm flexing. I considered cutting the shoulders off the bushes and using a bearing press but seeing how stuck they are I doubt t it will work.

I'm taking my pile of parts to a shop tomorrow to have them press everything for me. It would give me a renewed spirit to know I only have reassembly left to do.

 

Oh yeah almost forgot. For those of you who got a new skidplate, a handy tip if you install it solo is to grab two 5 gallon buckets, a block of wood or similar and a small jack.

Flip the buckets upside down, position them under the truck to be almost centered under the lca bushings. Slide the skid plate on top of them, then put the jack and wood block in the center and jack the plate up. This way you can position it easily to bolt in.

Side note, don't ever put a knife pointy side up in the cup holder. I did it today and hours later was dumb enough to lean across the seat in the dark to unlock a door. Stabbed myself in the man boob. Totally forgot it was there.

 

Good work here, Darkness. Reading your story and looking at the pics makes me very glad that I paid someone to do my front end. The same deal happened with the 02’ cam bolts.
