What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Thanks! I got over my incredible laziness, printed the instructions for Skid Row plates (only one with a pic of it installed is the trans skid), crawled under, and figured it out.

 

It’s an unbelievable deal they are having right now. Shipping alone was $290, which is now free.

 

So... I figured it's my turn to crawl around under a truck to help someone, but I don't have a definitive answer.

My 2002 came with cheap-ass 285 75 R16 mud tires. When I measure them on the truck, they're about 32". So I crawled under to check clearance but (I'm not surprised), the mounted spare is a BFG 265 70 R16, which I measured mounted up under the truck as 29" across. Here's a pic of the place this spare is closest to something:

I thought, 'well, maybe if your 33's aren't really 33".'

So I looked all around for other possible interference, and noticed that the metal frame or whatever that forms the circular area for the spare to fit, starts to curve at enough angle, that you'd potentially be able to carry the tire below the curve, but I don't think it will fit all the at in:

And I looked at how much threaded bolt is left where the spare bolts, and I don't see enough that you could drop a 33+ " spare down enough to fit.



It's close enough, and our trucks are uncluttered enough, it seems it kinda depends on degree of optimism (Edit: or whether I'd already bought the tires ).

If you want them badly enough, I think you could do it (probably by replacing that center attachment that holds the spare up understand the truck). But, even if you make it work, it'd mess with departure angle; you'd more likely smack down on the spare, coming off of rocks. But, if you're not planning to go off-roading....

 

Yeah, learning about this awesome deal was almost bad news, because I have so much committed already that I plan to finance, I really cannot buy the whole set.

I bought the trans skid to prevent my truck getting caught high centered in Teeter-totter fashion, which looks more likely on the first GEN, then the third.

The truck already has a steel front skid that is fairly wide and seems pretty durable, and the space to catch something behind it is not big, and the tires should always hold that portion of the truck up over any obstacle....

I'll hope to have another opportunity next year to pick up the remaining deal at some other crazy reduced price....

My 285/75/r16 spare is very snug. Any bigger and those frame curves that nestle the tire come into play (negatively). I do not thing any bigger will work as the spare will ‘wobble’ in the bay. Won’t lay flat underneath.

You might be able to retro fit by adding spacers to drop the tire to avoid the curves on frame, but the tire will then be (lower) seen. Spacers will need to be secured as well. Not doable as is, but maybe you can make it happen.

 

Take a bfh to the rear crossmember and it’ll fit.

Worked a little on the lights today. Swapped out old LED brake (3rd light) bulbs with standard incandescents. FOB now works proper.

Installed new courtesy lights and one dome light with LED Sylvania. So far so good. Now have confidence to do the rest of the interior and panel bulbs tomorrow.

Anybody have a shortcut on how to remove that ‘step’ bulb under the steering wheel? Looks to have a metal shroud around it. Will look better tomorrow when sun is shining.

 

Yeah, I'm looking at mine too, I think you have to start disassembling at the front bumper, hood, inner fenders, ...

If theres one thing I'm not afraid of it's working on my truck in the dark. Having a reassembly session with no lights, gives me a jump start on tomorrow.

The install was super easy, all I did was take out the old ones and put in the new ones. It wouldn't fit through like the old ones though, so I had to maneuver it in behind the rubber that attaches to the back of the headlight housing. I also removed the metal wire that was holding the halogens in because it was too small to hold the Hikari led. All it prob took me about less than 10 minutes for both sides and it's my first time installing new lights lol.

 

So was it plug and play, no twisting wires, soldering stuff? Asking for a friend. Who should probably replace headlights on a 2002.

I have the Front Engine Skid now. The oil pan and transmission skid get here Tuesday.

That’s another reason I added rock lights. Working on the truck at night is a little easier. Especially out on the trails. I also have these small cube lights called Lume Cubes. They are awesome for this application.

I have what I decided is a workable front skid (based mainly on other financial priorities) but the SR oil skid won't work with the one I have. So I only bought a transmission skid this time around (a major score at -20% and free shipping), and will hope for another opportunity in future to buy the rest.

Do you not have a transfer case skid?

 

Thanks for posting this. I'd never heard of Lume cubes but they look handy, maybe for camping as well as night-time truck repair. It'd be good to have directional lighting; a lot of camp lanterns cast light all around which effectively kills night vision.

I have a 20" led stick lamp but didn't bother charging it. I keep that in the truck usually. Truck battery is dead too, I really need to get this moving again.

 

Realized it's been my lower arm bushings squeaking up a storm all these years.

Got my outside TREs out, got the lower ball joints off, got the spindles and brake calipers off. Now need to have the bearing press work done and I'll pick a fight with the lower arm bushings tonight. If I lose that fight I guess I'll have a shop do that press work too.

Lower arms coming off next, wish me luck.

Do you guys know if they make the Spartan locker for our trucks. I know they have one for most Toyota axles but I can't seem to find one for the 8.4"...

 

I haven’t seen it for the 8.4”, just the 8”.

 

Crap. I wonder if the V6 model thru 09 might work..? Guess I'm getting one for the front of the 4Runner. I'd rather get one for the rear of the Tundra.
