I believe they are the balls in upper control arms, connecting the spindles and upper arm?

Just dropped her off to get some recalls done. Was quoted $758 for wheel bearings, seals and LCA bushings! That’s with their 20% off if I purchase on Wednesday. That’s $200 more than through @Roman at Cool Springs. Time to buy more parts. :spending:

Good times getting off the plane to de-ice the truck today! Poor girl was probably a little chilly these past few days...

I read your original post and sounds like you did good. That was a big drop in emissions. I noticed since doing major tuning on my 02’ that the exhaust isn’t as pungent as it once was. Also, the vapor upon start up on cold mornings is less as well.

Good call going with the non iridium plugs as the OE style are made for your year. I put in the OEM Denso and they only cost around $2 a pop versus $6-$8 iridium.

Hows your valve cover gaskets and PCV valve looking? Did mine back in the summer at 156k miles and the PCV valve was gunky.

I'm going to Trail Toys shop Saturday to do a CMC but I'll likely need to remove the flares and mud flaps. Maybe trim some plastic off the bumper.

$758 for parts alone? They tried giving me the list price, was a bit more than that. I showed them another Toyota online price and they got down to about 600 but I opted to get abs rings and rear caps as a just in case.

I had to remove my front mudflaps to comfortably fit my 285/70/R17 ST Maxx tires. You may need to do some trimming.

Does Baja Designs have a kit to fit them in on our Tundras? I had them on my 16 Tacoma and miss them, they are incredible.

No clue on those, haven’t checked yet. After passing the emissions with such a spectacular result, I’m not keen on messing with anything else. Just dropped another $230 on new Bilstein 5100’s for the rear, new sway bar links as one of them is apparently broken, new stud for one of the rear wheels as it’s riding with 5.... I want to get the engine clean and go under and clean the diff and tranny and look for leaks. I want to get her as close to perfect as I can for a reasonable cost. I should steam clean the engine after degreasing it, I’m just worried about potential to mess up electrical stuff.

I’m actually about to make a post asking about maintenance items for a truck this age. I have a new Haynes manual on the way as well. She’s treated us really well for 18 years and is long overdue for some maintenance and fresh parts.

$758 for bearings, inner/outer seals, spacers and LCA bushings. He originally quoted me $920ish. Showed him Cool Springs pricing and he brought it down to $758. Said that’s the best he could do and doesn’t know how they can sell oem parts that cheap. Got home and ordered from Cool Springs. $558 for everything.

Should I have gotten abs rings?

I could always preload my coilovers but then I'd have bro lean. Plus I haven't installed a diff drop yet.

Yours look like they sit pretty flush. Did you do any trimming or add anything? Or just pop them in?

Go through the ‘What have you done to your 1st Gen’ page here and check it out for maintenance items people have done. I didn’t do a ‘Build’ page like others and most of my 02’ maintenance stuff is on this section pages back. The 02’ is running better than ever currently due to the 6 months of love put back into it.

That's what I've been doing - I hate asking the questions which have been answered. I am surprised I haven't stumbled upon a general "do this maintenance" post so far, mayle I'll make one after I'm done researching.

So far, at 132K miles, we've done:
    • Timing belt and water pump at 90k miles
    • Front shocks at 125k miles (Bilstein 5100 on lowest setting)
    • Replaced original key cylinder as the car wouldn't start (it was completely worn)
    • Replaced the part where gear shift lever connects to the steering wheel (dad did it with his mechanic buddy, not sure exactly what was changed)
    • Replaced both rear window latches
    • Front brakes done twice
    • Replaced original wheels and tires with brad new take-offs from a 4Runner TRD Off-Road
    • Installed a makeshift bed tray from super thick rubber matts from a gym (main duty for the truck is dog transportation to the Cherry Creek State Park)
    • Installed a truck topper (scored for free on craigslist, all it needed was rear gar lifts for the gate)
Rest was done in the last few weeks, as we failed emissions and check engine light came up:
    • Exhaust manifold (passenger side) with the oxygen sensor (seized)
    • Spark plugs
    • MAF sensor cleaned
    • Oil change/Air filter change/tire rotation
    • Cooling system cleaned a bit to solve "no heat at idle" problem
About to be done, parts on order:
    • Oxygen sensor driver side - I have the spare manifold and gaskets if it is seized (check engine light came up after we fixed the passenger side)
    • Rear shocks (Bilstein 5100)
    • Sway bar links (techs noticed left side was broken during the last oil change)
    • Engine bay cleanup so I can better check for leaks
    • Drivetrain cleanup and lubrication (bought the grease gun and grease, I doubt it was ever done)
    • "Install" new Husky vehicle-specific liners, arriving tomorrow.
    • Remote the grill and sand a bit of rust away, and respray
Other stuff I want to do:
    • Replace diff fluid and check for diff cover leaks
    • Replace transmission fluid
    • Replace coolant
    • Steam cleaning the interior - seats and carpets
    • Get the third light wired in for the topper
    • Get the topper painted, it was free and functional, but the clear coat is gone and the color doesn't match

Hopefully, after all this is said and done, I'll have a pretty reliable truck for another 130K miles. My dad really dropped the ball on maintenance and upkeep, now that I get to take care of it, I hope to do it better.

Add throttle body cleaning and while you are in there tighten the cable.

Also, your ‘cooling - no heat at idle’ problem could be the PCV valve. My engine runs cooler since replacing. Afterall, it is a vent system.

Check your breathers on the diffs and transfer case. Mine were stuck clogged on the back diff, and partial on the front. Think my rear axle seals developed a leak due to poor ventilation.
