Coleman Mini Bike

Has anyone had any experience with one of these or something similar? I was thinking of getting one for my son for Christmas, but didn’t know if they are worth a damn or not.

Had one years ago, man they fun!

 

My buddy has one. He set up a small little track in his backyard and we take turns carvings on it. Fun little machine. Only downside, fuel seeps out of the fill cap when we are thrashing around on it. I also have the same problem on a little bicycle conversion two stroke that I have.

Either way it’s a fun little bike!

You can go with a used dirt bike for that price that will be a much nicer/reliable ride.

I’m overthinking the future. I’ve been riding my whole life, I feel like the streets are less safer these days, I look around and people are on their phones all the time while they drive. But on a trail, it be super fun, I think a small dirt bike would be more versatile and reliable as said above. Yolo, if you ride with him, I’d say go for it either way!

 

Depends on how much it would be ridden and where (What sort of terrain) They are ok as a novelty item, personally, you can find a used "REAL" minibike for about the same price, get parts, not get beat to shit because of the lack of suspension etc etc. Resale absolutely needs to be part of the equation, if they like the sport and want to keep moving up, getting a used real bike will enable you to sell it for about the same price as you bought it for and use that money for the upgrade.

Having just gone through the whole process of getting two kids started (Daughter was 5 Son was 6) and into full sized bikes, you'll want to figure out how to keep trading up, and it happens faster then you want it to. Gear is always the next struggle, never buy new, they don't use it long enough to even show wear on the gear sometimes.

 

I have one. Kids enjoy riding it around the neighborhood. Need to find another one so I can ride with em.

 

They will probably get bored with it and want something faster and with a suspension. I would opt for a small 110cc or 125cc trail dirtbike that they can grow into. I never regretted it with my kids.

I had an opportunity to try a non powered drift trike once. was about a 2 mile long road. I was giggling the entire time.

 

I got a mini bike for Xmas when I was 10. Was a lot of fun. It did lead up to dirt bikes though. Natural progression.

 

Thanks for all of the responses. It looks like people have had good experiences with them. I never got past bicycles myself. I was notorious for destroying them. Loved setting up ramps and obstacle courses.

I don’t know if he’d enjoy it enough to get into it as a hobby, just looking for something different this year. My son is pretty bad about getting bored with things pretty quickly, and it’s a struggle to keep him active. If it was up to him, he’d just play video games 24/7. I love games myself, but have always managed to balance them out with other things.

He did martial arts for a few years, and was pretty good at it. Got up to blue belt and lost interest. He likes baseball, but it’s hard for him to play without other kids. There’s only one other boy on our street, and he gets tired of playing catch with mom and dad. We did scouts for a year, but the local troop was pretty inactive so that didn’t take off.

Since there aren’t a lot of other kids within walking distance, it’s tough to motivate him to stay outside and play. I’m trying to come up with things he can have fun with on his own. That’s the main thing he likes about video games. He can play and talk with his friends from school. I was more of a loner growing up, so I didn’t mind running around in the woods all day by myself.

 

I was raised on a ranch. Most of my friends lived in town so I needed to find things to do. The mini bike was cool because I could zip around to our barns, chase cows, try do do stupid stunts when no was was around. Good times..

 

Same with my son; talks to his friends online playing Fortnite. Hard to get them out of the house because all of the other kids are indoors too. So I feel your pain.

 

I understand the challenge. Mt Bikes are a good alternative as well. Mini bikes are awesome if you have a place to ride and not piss everyone off. Riding alone gets boring too as he may want to start exploring, so dad needs to look at getting a trail bike as well.

 

My daughter doesn’t play video games anymore. But she’s glued to Snapchat. I also put a smal flatscreen and cable in her bedroom and she never used it. She preferred to watch YouTube on her laptop, that is supposed to be for school! I even got her a device to mirror or laptop to the TV which she doesn’t use either. I jacked the box out of her room and put it in our spare room for me and the wife to share. I have all my old game systems in the spare room so I can play them if I like. I even hooked up our old surroundsound living room system up in there. We do play Mario kart Wii as a family LMFAO! I smoke all of them!

My daughter does want a motorcycle or quad. But that is an expensive hobby for me to get her into. Especially knowing how she drops everything but YouTube like a bad habit.

Here's how I handled the suckubus known as technology. I didn't let them have it, and continue to not let them. I also monitor their shit relentlessly, they get 1 hour of youtube per day via Monitoring software. They bitch and complain, I take their shit. they don't get social media accounts due to the BS and Drama that occurs there, not to mention privacy concerns and how one stupid picture can impact college or job applications.

I'm that hardass dad that they hate, but I'm not playing around with their future. They get bored, they get kicked out of the house and figure out something to do. ride a bicycle, dig a hole, learn to talk to people face to face.

We have bikes, and slack lines and all sorts of outside shit to use, just so I don't have to deal with the BS that happens online. Oh, they don't get a TV in their room either. Yeah, i'm an asshole dad.

Back to the subject. I think a $500 experiment isn't too bad to get them out of the house.

 

More than anything, he’s just not someone who enjoys doing things by himself. He’s social and wants to interact with others. We live on a road that doesn’t connect with others, so he can’t just ride his bike to meet up with other kids. His sisters actually need to be alone regularly, so it was never an issue for them. My middle girl used to stay outside all the time messing with bugs and lizards all day.
