So my Tundra is a 16 with 30,594 miles and I have owned it for a few months now and kind of frustrated with it. First the steering rack had to be replaced under warranty now the rear end is shot and needs to be replaced. My factory warranty ran out last month and luckily I bought the gold extended warranty from a company called Mercury. Let me vent, the dealership let me know that if for what ever reason the rear end is not covered I am responsible to pay the $900 for the rear end to be disassembled as is required for my warranty rep to physically go to the dealership and verify and approve a new one to be put in. I took it in for the rear end howling at low speeds, truck shaking when braking going down hill and for the ecm rattling under the glove box. Im told warped rotors are not under warranty which I guess has some valid reasoning. My frustration in all this is that I bought this tundra because all 3 of my neighbors have one and told me I never have to worry about it lol. In less than 35k miles the rotors are warped, steering rack was bad and now the rear end ! Did I just happen to get a bad apple or what? And has anyone else had to deal with a similar situation with an extended warranty sending a person out to verify an issue ?

2 things, sorry for your bad luck and misfortune, but i think you just got a bad apple. Must have been built on a Friday before a holiday.
#2 thats a 3rd party warranty company and im unfamiliar with them and how they operate but it doesnt sou d unreasonable.

There have been a few members that have had this rear end issue on a newer model. This is the first that I have heard about a steering rack however... sorry to hear about your issues.

Sounds like the 3rd Gen Tacoma I had. Nothing but problems. Although the complaints on the Tundra overall pale in comparison to the Tacoma forums.

I thought the bumper-to-bumper warranty is three years or 36,000 miles and powertrain warranty for 60,000 miles?

I have never heard of this. Are you towing a lot of weight frequent times or doing stand still burnouts? :burnrubber:

I have not done any burnouts only towed a trailer about 5 times with junk from the property but none of those loads were more than 2000 lbs (just guesses) other than that only a hay bale a month. Unknown on how it was taken care if prior to me buying it a few months ago. The service advisor told me as of October the factory warranty was up on it. Is it possible the previous owner bought the 16 model year in October of 15?

I should clarify about the steering rack that was replaced. It worked just fine but when i was looking under it a week or so after i bought it I found a bunch of grease coming out of where the inner tie rod attaches. They said there is no replacement seal to fix it so a new rack was put in under the factory warranty.

The rear end should be covered under the 60k power train warranty through toyota. I had a rear wheel bearing go out at 55k and they replaced it because it was in the rear.

I know that when I had my Tundra re-geared the owner of the shop told me I had a lot of fine metal in the differentials. Especially in the rear. I don't remember what he said though that explained it.

At what point do you have to get a tundra regeared? I am looking at putting 315‘s on and I want to make sure I don’t have to add that to the list!

Some say 35" and some say 37" our trucks can handle both because quite a few people do it. I did it because I like the idea of holding 6th and 5th gear longer in the mountains. My truck is no longer gear searching nearly as much as before. Every truck that I have lifted and ran bigger tires I have re-geared.
There are quite a few topic on here about re-gearing.

I politely called the dealer yesterday and inquired about the powertrain warranty and 2 hours later they called me back and apologize for the mix up and agreed its 100% covered. Thank you everyone, will post back when I get my truck back
