This morning on my way to work an moronic contractor who didn't feel like securing properly his load dropped a ladder in the middle of the road. This caused a chain reaction of cars slowing down.

At first it seemed that cars were moving at stable lower speed, but suddenly someone 3 spots ahead of me decided to stop completely. By then I was a little distracted trying to figure out the ladder story and missed this. Luckily for me the TSS got it right and alerted me on time (and I believe started to press the brakes) I was able to avoid a collision with the car in front of me. Unfortunately, the person behind me did not.

I suffered minor damage. It looks like my bumper and the hitch mount may need to be replaced. (According to the officer, covered by the other driver's policy). The car behind me will likely have repairs worth a few grand.

Glad to see you have minimal damage. I was rear ended a few weeks ago by a Ford Crown Victoria taxi. Abolutely no damage - my hitch took most of it. The taxi had some damage where the grill met my hitch.

Just an fyi, it's your insurance that will determine who is at fault.......officers have no say.
You are good though, definitely not your fault.

Anytime you’re hit from the rear, the vehicle that hit you is going to be at fault. Police investigations and reports that include speed, conditions, skid marks etc. go to the insurance companies. The insurance adjusters and underwriters take it from there. You have nothing to worry about except trying to stay with OEM parts, and not offshore copies.

I can say not any time your hit from the rear the vehicle in the rear is at fault. But in this case I'd say you're ok.

Surprised the Lincoln that hit you did not have some form of Safety sense. Glad you only had minimal damage.

Just a word of advice, don't assume the insurance adjuster catches everything that needs to be repaired, nor the body shop. And choose your own body shop, not the ones suggested to you by the insurance company.

Crawl under your truck and take a good look at the hitch and frame rails. If the hitch is touching the spare tire, there's a good chance the frame got bent or buckled. The rear bumper on my previous Tundra looked like yours in the picture and it ended up being totaled ($30,000+ in repairs) because the frame was damaged.

Yeah, I thinkt I was very lucky. Instead of being hit by a delicate SUV, it could have been a 7000-lb F250.

True. The frame is my main concern. The hitch mount looks bent. I hope it ends there though.

So it seems that the frame is indeed bent. I will take a better picture with natural light tomorrow. This is the side that is damaged the most:

Some Mods :) See build thread for details
Pretty sure the Pre collision warning is just a warning and doesn’t actually brake the truck. This is different in the cars but I’m pretty sure not in the tundra. Can someone confirm? I just got my 19 and haven’t fully researched.

    Here’s what I found:
Standard Toyota Safety Sense-P (TSS-P) System
The 2018 Toyota Tundra now has standard Toyota Safety Sense-P (TSS-P) across the entire trim level spectrum. This system combines a variety of driver-assistive safety technologies that work in tandem to keep you alert to hazards while driving. The TSS-P includes the Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection function, Lane Departure Alert, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, and Automatic High Beams. TSS-P uses millimeter-wave radar and a monocular camera sensor designed to help detect a preceding pedestrian or a preceding vehicle in the surrounding area. Once a pedestrian or vehicle are detected in front of the vehicle, TSS-P can automatically apply braking if necessary to help avoid collisions in certain conditions or lessen the severity of a collision.”

On my 2018 it will apply the brakes. Someone decided to move 2 lanes over, cutting between me and the car in front of me with maybe a few feet of clearance, it alarmed and firmly braked. I’ve had the warning alarm come on a few times in traffic but this is the first time it’s applied the brakes. Most of the time it alarms as a motorcycle is lane splitting during commute traffic on the freeway.

Another interesting fact is that it applies the trailer brakes if connected, had a car switch lanes in front of me.

I have an 18 and the truck will come to a complete stop.

I have the SR5, so I think I just have pre-collision, lane depart, and adaptive cruise.

Pre collision has thrown the brakes on (appropriately) about 3 times when someone decided to stop in intersections in front of me.

Adaptive cruise actively brakes in traffic, and accelerates back up to speed like a person would.

So far, I’m a big fan.
