Looking at Upgrading

Mine warped the first year of driving in 03’. You can feel the truck gripping and releasing when coming to a stop. Especially noticeable when slowing from 20 down to zero mph. Tug tug tug action as you slow to a stop.

Yup, rotors and pads. Inspect the slide pins while you are in there. A brand of brake pad I have heard really good things about but haven't tried yet is Akebono. They're less expensive than Toyota.

 

I'm assuming Akebono only makes pads? I can't find rotors.

 

So should I go with Performance over Ultra Premium for $14 more?

What you guys recommend for removing this junk? The guy I bought the truck from said he bought it from Walmart and it's some kind if coating. Paint stripper or maybe pressure washing? I'll do it while the tires are off.

 

Is it Plasti-dip? If so, then you can peel it off. Try using your finger nails to pull it off.

 

It might be. I'll try that.

 

Looks like plasti dip but not very thick which makes it a pain in the ass to remove. It just rips instead of peeling off. Just use some elbow grease and some acetone on a microfiber.

 

Yeah, I had kind of picked at it earlier and it just ripped. I'll try acetone.

What are good wheels and does anyone make pocket style fender flares for this truck? Don't need this stuff right now but it would be good to know in case I find a good deal.

 

Wheels depend on your taste and budget.

I had Ion Alloys on for awhile. Stopped liking them after a month. Picked up some genuine Toyota TRD SEMA wheels for a good deal and after 8+ months, I still pop a chubby everytime I look at my truck (except in winter...because winter wheels...boo hiss). Pics are in my build thread.

Any ideas on flares?

 

No aftermarket flare options for our 1st gens. Most guys remove them. One guy tried to make 2nd or 3rd gen flares fit but they didn’t work.

 

He turned it into a Tac-undra. (Combo of Tacoma and Tundra look).

Maybe. I want to see how wide my tires set once I get new rims. Should I get some wheels with less backspace to get a wider stance or will that start to mess with handling?

 

So the Icons should be in today. I would like to do all of the work myself, hopefully over the weekend. Is this (suspension, brake pads, rotors, and lines) something I can do with some videos and some help from you guys or should I take it to my mechanic?

 

Depends on many factors. Personally, I had a shop do my front end rebuild/refresh in the summer as it was something that I did not want to do. It would have taken me 3 days and hundreds extra dollars in tools. I was making good cash at the time and ‘broke even’ on the deal as far as time to dollars ratio.

Now, if I was sitting around doing nothing then I’d consider doing it maybe.

 

Do it youreself. It’s a great feeling of accomplishment once it’s all done. If you have the tools you should be fine. Watch some videos to increase your confidence. Tacomas and newer tundras all have the same type of suspension and should be more popular on YouTube. Don’t be scared to ask questions.

 

That's what I'm thinking. And it will increase my knowledge of how it all works. Might be a good thing if something breaks in the boonies. Any specialty tools needed?
